• Get Fireworks back in Illinois!
Studies show that consumer (1.4G) fireworks have become safer to use since being regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. More consumer fireworks are being bought and used every year with fewer injuries per pound of product purchased, while Illinois continues to miss out on the taxes from these purchases. By relaxing the consumer fireworks laws in Illinois, residents will once again be able to enjoy using them and the state will realize the financial benefit from sales tax revenue.

  • Hillary Clinton: Support GMO labeling and public health, not Monsanto!
[Note: The petition to Hillary was started before she officially declared her candidacy, before she became a grandmother, and before she had a serious challenger - Sen. Bernie Sanders - for the Democratic nomination. The petition language cannot be altered or edited once it has been made public, but the ask remains the same]. Hillary Clinton could be the next Democratic presidential nominee. Do we really want someone in the White House who protects Monsanto's profits at the expense of public health? Scientists, medical professionals and climate experts warn us that a food and agriculture system built around poisons like Monsanto's Roundup and Dow's 2,4-D, a system that promotes soy and corn monocultures instead of crop diversity, is unhealthy for humans and the environment. In fact, the World Health Organization in March (2015) declared Roundup a probable human carcinogen. Genetically engineered agriculture has failed. It has created superweeds that require increasingly toxic poisons, and those poisons are showing up in the blood, urine and breast milk of humans. The United Nations last year issued a report entitled "Before It's Too Late," stating that not only will genetically engineered crops not feed the world, as the biotech industry claims, but they are a huge contributor to global warming. Polls show that 93% of Americans want GMO labeling laws. It's time for Hillary, whose ties to the biotech industry run deep, to support public health, not Monsanto. The next leader of the U.S. needs to take a stand against huge corporations that are devastating the environment and human health. If Hillary Clinton is not that leader, consumers will look to candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who has a proven track record of supporting states' rights to label GMOs, and the transition to organic, sustainable, regenerative agriculture.

  • Saving Cottonwood
Society's future is surely slipping out of the horizon of a brighter future on a lot of self inflicted decisions..but keeping the Cottonwood Treatment Facility open is a HUGE necessity..even a police officer here in Cape Girardeau said, Cape P.D. used to only handled MAYBE 1-2 mentally disturbed people a month, now it's 1-2 a day! It's unbelievable..I have a son with a diagnosis of moderate ADHD, & ODD, our children of course are the/our future!!.. How can a great treatment facility like Cottonwood, where some employees have been there for two or more decades and SO many youths have benefited, just be called a budget cut???

  • Rep. Miller: End Corporate Tax Breaks for Outrageous CEO Bonuses
Right now, huge corporations, like Walmart, are getting tax breaks for handing out obscene CEO bonuses. The tax code sets a $1 million limit per executive for the amount of pay that corporations can write off their income taxes. But the problem is that there’s a loophole that exempts “performance-based” pay. So, corporations are shelling out huge CEO bonuses to pay less in taxes. For example, during the past six years, Walmart pocketed $298.6 million in fully deductible “performance pay,” lowering the company’s federal tax bills by $104 million. At a time when so many Americans are struggling to find well-paying jobs and pay for basic things like healthcare, education, and housing, it’s wrong and unacceptable to give corporations tax breaks for shelling out multi-million dollar CEO bonuses. It’s time to close this performance pay loophole and end tax incentives for outrageous CEO pay.

  • Keep Exemptions Out of the Executive Order!
President Obama will soon sign an executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against LGBTQ individuals! However, we have just a few weeks to ensure that this executive order doesn't contain exemptions for religiously-affiliated groups that would drive a big hole through the middle of it. Federal contractors are paid with taxpayer money — and using taxpayer money to pay for discrimination is simply wrong. We know the religious right is already putting up a fight about this, and we must do the same. We will deliver your signature directly to the White House, and we want to include as many voices as possible -- sign the petition today to make sure that we secure equality without asterisks!

  • Stop the Spectra NYC Pipeline!
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has already been proven to create dangerously high chemical and gas levels in ground and reservoir waters near fracking sites. NYC has historically had clean and safe drinking water; now it is threatened with both water supply, environmental and earthquake risks thanks to this project. We must tell our State Legislature and our Governor to say "no" to Spectra NYC.

  • Give Sanctuary to Children Fleeing Drug Cartel Violence
Almost 60,000 children are currently being held in disease-ridden, filthy facilities as prisoners. They are fleeing unbearable violence from drug cartels in their home countries. They do not need to be sent back to this violence, nor do they need to be treated as criminals. They are refugees.

  • It's time to raise healthy children to create a healthier world! Implementing Meditation in Illin...
Kids are stressed out! Children today are certainly more stressed out than their parents realize. One in five children said they worried a great deal about things going on in their lives, and nearly a third admitted to stress-related symptoms such as difficulty sleeping, according to the American Psychological Association's annual Stress in America report. Yet the same report found that only 8 percent of all parents were aware that their children experienced any stress at all. A regular meditation practice has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety; relax a busy mind; shift negative thoughts into positive ones; and lessen symptoms of depression. Researcher professor Felicia Huppert of the University of Cambridge said in a press release, "Psychological well-being has been linked to better learning, social relationships and academic performance, so the enhancement of well-being is likely to improve a range of outcomes in the school context."

  • Make Corporations Pay Their Fair Share of Taxes to Fix Our Roads and Bridges
Some members of Congress have been up to something that's unpatriotic: They want to create a tax "holiday" for huge corporations that have been stashing profits offshore to get out of paying their fair share of taxes here at home. Let’s tell Congress to fix our infrastructure by making sure that corporations pay their fair share of taxes. Big corporations from Apple to General Electric to Bank of America have more than $2 trillion in profits offshore, much of it in tax havens. They're eventually supposed to bring most of those profits home and pay U.S. taxes on them, but get this: There's no deadline for them to do so. These corporations are heavily lobbying Congress to let them bring those profits back to the U.S. at a tax rate that's just a fraction of what they would normally pay. The last time there was a special tax holiday like this, they paid a tax rate of 5.25% -- a small fraction of the official 35% corporate income tax rate. Meanwhile, our roads and bridges are crumbling, and the Highway Trust Fund that helps us repair and upgrade them will lose 30% of its funding in August. Some construction projects will stop, and we could lose 700,000 jobs. In a sense, we'll have a highway shutdown, like we had a government shutdown last fall. Some members of Congress want to pretend that giving corporations a huge break on their taxes is a smart way to fix our infrastructure. Democrats like Rep. Chris Van Hollen (MD) and Rep. Sander Levin (MI) want to save the Highway Trust Fund by making it even harder for corporations to shift profits offshore in the first place by changing their corporate address to a tax haven. Tell Congress: Big corporations depend on our roads and bridges, too. Make them keep their profits in the U.S. and pay their fair share of taxes. They owe our country. They should pay their fair share like we all do.
