• Override Christie's veto of the Sandy Bill of Rights!
New Jersey’s Sandy recovery effort is a disaster in itself. The system is so broken that legislators unanimously passed a Sandy Bill of Rights for home and business owners in desperate need of relief. And then, incredibly, Governor Christie vetoed it. Even worse, the Republican legislators who voted for the bill are running scared from the Governor and now have refused to override his veto. The Sandy Bill of Rights would force the state to be upfront about application requirements for Sandy aid, allow applicants to track their aid applications online, and give applicants a clear reason for why their aid requests were denied or put on hold. It will also help ensure that aid is distributed on the basis of need and not politics. This is a winnable fight, but only if we convince legislators that they should be more frightened of a backlash from voters than a backlash from Governor Christie.

  • Don’t miss this opportunity to protect our children and future generations!
A study in northeastern Minnesota found one in 10 children are born with unsafe levels of mercury in their blood. On June 2, the Environmental Protection Agency announced national carbon pollution standards that will help protect Minnesota children from toxic mercury while reducing carbon pollution that is changing Minnesota’s seasons. Minnesota has already taken steps to reduce carbon emissions from power plants by more than 20 percent. The new carbon pollution standards provide a huge opportunity for Minnesota to continue its transition to clean, renewable energy and protect our communities and families from pollution. Coal-burning power plants are responsible for one-third of the carbon pollution in Minnesota and more than half the mercury pollution in our lakes and rivers. This pollution poses a serious health risk to Minnesotans, responsible for premature deaths, higher risks of asthma attacks and respiratory disease, and tens of thousands of missed work days. We have an obligation to our children and future generations to act on climate now and create a strong economy built on clean energy jobs. Join us in thanking Governor Dayton for his leadership on clean energy and ask him to seize this opportunity to protect Minnesotans through strong implementation of the new carbon pollution standards.

  • North Smithfield Age Requirements Waiver Policy
My daughter has been proven to be academically and socially ready for kindergarten. She missed the cut-off by 7 days, but the school committee and commissioner of education are playing politics siting a guideline, not law and will not listen to valid, logical points. RI law does not exclude children based on age, but allows separate school districts to make that determination. They've sent me back and forth and put me through the ringer, wasting precious time. It's time to tell them what we think!

  • Childcare: Changing Tables in Restaurants
I am starting this petition because I experienced having to change my baby's diaper on a bathroom floor in a restaurant which was absolutely disgusting. This petition is to require all restaurants to have changing tables in both women and men's bathrooms. This will help promote cleanliness and a proper area for a parent to change a child.

  • Tell the Postal Service: Create a Maya Angelou postage stamp
Last week, we lost a phenomenal woman. Maya Angelou lived an inspiring life--one that will continue to influence generations to come. And there's a wonderful way for us as a country to honor her: by commemorating her life with a United States Postal Service stamp. Stamps have featured people for their notable accomplishments in the arts. They have included American heroes, but one is missing. Maya Angelou was influential in so many ways: she was Hollywood's first black female director, a best-selling author of 36 books and presidential inauguration poet. That's why there's movement to create a stamp in her honor. Will you add your name?

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel:Recognize the accomplishments of Mayor Jane Byrne
Jane Byrne is 81 years old and in frail health. Her accomplishments during her tenure (1979-1983) as Chicago's first elected woman are still benefitting citizens of this city. Her history and her contributions should be acknowledged in an equally enduring way while she is able to appreciate that she will be remembered when she is no longer with us.

  • Cleaning up the 3rd largest global warming polluter in the nation
Pennsylvania is the third largest source of global warming pollution in the nation—mostly due to our power plants which are currently allowed to spew unlimited amounts of global warming pollution. When President Obama's EPA proposed the first ever limits on this pollution earlier in the week, they announced the largest step we've ever taken as a nation to tackle global warming. But, the National Mining Association, coal companies and other polluters are trying to stop these efforts—even working with their allies in the Senate to rollback the Clean Air Act and halt the EPA from acting. We need Sen. Casey to support these climate rules if we're going to get them across the finish line.

  • NE44th Street Safety
My daughter was almost run over by a speeding car one December morning while leaving our car to get on her school bus. We have 12 young children on our street who play outside and will be playing more frequently in the summer. We have noted many incidents of speeding up and down the streets. This is a residential area with an elementary school in the neighborhood and older school age children as well. Drivers should be careful when driving within the neighborhood and need to be forced to slow down. Some of our neighbors have already filed a police complaint regarding this issue and a request for the three changes but have not heard back.

  • Social Security offices to Provide Government Issued Photo IDs
Government issued photo IDs provided by Social Security offices (these offices exist all around the country) would be a very cost effective and rapid way to end voter identification and voter registration problems. One card maker machine, one camera, one (or two) trained staff member at each office could handle all persons arriving at their offices requesting a photo ID card. As you know, almost every citizen of the United States has a Social Security number and has some dealings with our government. Issue the cards free of charge.

  • Texans labeling GMO's
The risks of consuming food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are still mostly unknown, but large food corporations have actively lobbied against labeling food containing GMOs. Texans should be given a choice about whether or not to purchase genetically modified food, so I support labeling all food that contains GMOs.
