Save NPR's "Tell Me More" showNPR has announced the cancellation of "Tell Me More," just days after announcing NPR's new CEO, a former MTV and E! Entertainment executive. This is the third NPR show focused on meaningful conversations about race to be cancelled in recent years. After "The Tavis Smiley Show" was cancelled, Smiley said NPR failed to "meaningfully reach out" to listeners of color. Former "News & Notes" host Ed Gordon said, "Sometimes, I feel this show is being allowed to die on the vine." The National Black Church Initiative is calling on its 15.7 million members to stop giving money to NPR until "Tell Me More" returns to the air. This show is invaluable for listeners of all races. I want to hear more of the honest conversations I can only find on Michel Martin's "Tell Me More."330 of 400 SignaturesCreated by Noah T. Winer

Florida: Stop prosecuting chronic pain sufferers as "drug traffickers"!This sounds like the plot of an Orwell novel, but it's exactly what happened to Richard Paey — and it's the fate of any Florida citizen under the state's draconian mandatory minimum drug laws.73 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Demand Progress

Don't let Jeff Bezos keep extorting publishers and "erasing" authors!Brad Stone's "The Everything Store" describes Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' relationship with publishers as "a cheetah [pursuing] a sickly gazelle." Now we're seeing the same people who published activist heroes like Lawrence Lessig get shut out by the biggest bully in publishing.20 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Demand Progress

More research for strokesI had low cholesterol and blood pressure, didn't have diabetes, and was a non-smoker. But I lost my career because of stroke. So if you think it couldn't happen to you, think again. More research should be done for its causes and treatment--immediately!196 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Joyce Hoffman

GMHC CAB Leader Fights Expulsion Based on Discrimination, Freedom of Speech and Political ExpressionThe Gay Men’s Health Crisis, Inc. (GMHC) is the world’s first and leading provider of HIV/AIDS prevention care and advocacy. Its mission is to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. On Wednesday, May 5, 2014, the Vice-Chair of the GMHC Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) was terminated from all services provided by GMHC for his advocacy of all GMHC clients. There is a growing concern within the GMHC Community that those clients who publicly voice their opinions and advocate regarding issues of clients' concerns are now being marginalized, intimidated, harassed, and unfairly punished for their actions. We recently saw the push-back from the board from any real input by the clients in the recent CEO selection process that ended up with more questions being raised than answers regarding a “New Direction” for the agency. In the minds of many, the GMHC Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) has been hijacked with the assistance of the CAB Chair and the staff liaison to the CAB. This is not the first time that the staff liaison to the CAB has been accused of discriminatory treatment, when a HIV negative client file complaint that he was being discriminated against based on his negative status. goo.gl/yAED4x--The issue of a mandatory separate entrance being used by those clients who come for their HIV related services is also discriminatory and only serves to fuel the stigma of HIV/AIDS. (highlight and right click)>>> http://goo.gl/nDEdG2 goo.gl/MVOpFj --The media have also reported on whether funds raised for programs and services at the agency are being spent as intended. The issue of transparency and openness at the agency are other issues brought to the attention of the board by clients in the past. Whatever happen to that “New Direction” that was touted in a press release by the board upon the announcement of a new CEO search? That “New Direction” and a litany of issues raised by the CAB has either been summarily dismissed or totally ignored by the GMHC Board and the senior management team. We ask that you stand up for what is right in your support for all GMHC clients against discrimination, for freedom of expression and due process at the agency. The petition will go to the GMHC Co-Chairs of the Board, Roberta Kaplan, Esq. and Michael C. Harwood, Esq, its CEO, Mr. Kelsey Louie, Ms. Lynnette Ford, MSW, MA, Managing Director, Program Services and Evaluation, and a copy to Mr. Eric T. Schneiderman, New York State Attorney General. We demand: 1. That CAB leader Joseph Sellman be reinstated immediately as GMHC client and member of the GMHC CAB. 2. That the GMHC Staff Liaison to the CAB, David Hind, be disciplined for his unprofessional conduct and harassment of a GMHC client and having submitted a false and misleading statement that was racist in tone against Joseph Sellman. 3. That the issue of a separate and discriminatory entrance being used by GMHC Clients at 446 West 33rd Street, NYC be eliminated immediately. Respectfully, The Action Committee for Justice and Transparency at GMHC153 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Joseph Sellman

No Cell Tower on Scenic and Ecologically-Sensitive Colrain-Shelburne RoadThree years ago, my wife and Colrain-Shelburne Rd. resident Godeliève Richard became electro-hypersensitive. She experiences numerous serious medical symptoms when exposed to wireless radiation. Her condition has plunged our family into hours and hours of research on the subject which have taught us that the current FCC standards are not adequately protecting U.S. citizens. The proposed cell tower would be the first glimpse motorists on Route 2 see of the "beautiful hilltowns." It is proposed in an area surrounded by wetlands and homes that include elderly people and children, the most vulnerable populations to health damage from EMF radiation. Studies have shown property values drop by an average of 15% around cell towers. The first night of the hearing on June 17 featured AT&T's lawyer asking for 3 "waivers" of Shelburne by-laws, including the one which states cell towers must be at least 500 feet from homes. This tower will be a mere 350 feet, essentially playing Russian roulette with innocent people's health. The hearing will be continued on July 29th at 7 pm in Memorial Hall, Shelburne Falls when an updated list of petition signers will be given again to the ZBA. Letters can be sent to [email protected] or mailed to ZBA, 51 Bridge Street. All letters received before July 29 will be considered by the Zoning Board. Creating an FSU Presidential Search Process that is Open, Fair, and InclusiveEarlier this year, Florida State University began a search to choose FSU’s next President. We, the FSU community, deserve a process that is open, fair, inclusive and representative of the highest ethical standards so that when completed, we can all move forward together knowing that the process was thorough and fair and can be supportive of the new President. The fact that the search committee, contrary to its many claims, has made a single presumptive front runner (a powerful politician in the Florida Senate) seem ever more like its inevitable choice, reflects a process that is neither fair, nor inclusive, nor representative of the highest ethical standards. This petition is not focused on the presumptive front runner, but on a flawed search process that will lead to divisiveness that is not in the best interests of our university community as a whole and Florida’s taxpayers. For a complete account of the search process thus far, see presidentsandpolitics.blogspot.com.1,507 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Jennifer Proffitt

CNN's Climate Change Expert: Ann Coulter?!?!At a May 19 awards ceremony, Zucker admitted that while climate change "deserves more attention," CNN hasn't "figured out how to engage the audience in that story in a meaningful way." He added that there was a "tremendous lack of interest on the audience's part." Just two days later, CNN gave us a lesson in how not to cover the issue. The program OutFront (5/21/14) covered the "controversy" over game show host Pat Sajak's climate change denial Twitter outburst. So who did CNN tap to weigh in on Sajak? Far-right provocateur and climate change denier Ann Coulter. Informing the audience was evidently not the point. As substitute host Briana Keilar introduced the segment: "Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak says global warming alarmists are unpatriotic. Tonight, Ann Coulter tells us why she agrees." And the interview was preceded by a taped segment that turned to another global warming denier: "Sajak's skepticism is echoed by others, most notably Florida Sen. Marco Rubio." Some of CNN's previous climate coverage this year has included putting deniers on Crossfire as one "side" of the debate–in one case because it was cold in some parts of the country. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz appeared on the Situation Room (2/21/14) to falsely claim that "the data are not supporting what the advocates are arguing. The last 15 years, there has been no recorded warming." But the segment with Coulter is actually worse–not just treating deniers as though they're a legitimate part of a climate "debate," but acting as though they're the only viewpoints worth hearing from. Is this what Zucker means by trying "to engage the audience in a meaningful way"?2,885 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Peter Hart, FAIR

The Tea Party should not be in charge of our immigration policiesCan you imagine what the US would look like if the Tea Party set our immigration policies? But that's exactly what's happening. We have the votes needed to pass reform, but Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor are letting Tea Party extremists like Steve King set the agenda on immigration reform. 11 million aspiring Americans currently living in the US without papers need immigration reform now. Please join us in telling Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor to stop pandering to the extremists in the Republican party trying to kill immigration reform and mass deport 11 million people.61 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Gabe Ortiz
