• The 1% Should Pay Their Fair Share in Taxes
It's tax time again, when our minds turn toward paying the taxes we owe, or possibly getting a refund. But what we don't think of enough is whether our tax system is fair. The richest 1% of Americans are now getting the largest percentage of total national income in almost a century. But many millionaires pay a lower federal tax rate than many middle class Americans. Some don't pay any federal taxes at all. That's because of deductions for things like mortgages on large homes, business entertainment, and gold-plated health care plans. It's because of tax loopholes like offshore tax havens and capital gains loopholes. The situation is even more lopsided with the Social Security tax, which doesn't apply to income greater than $117,000. You can see why Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. And Republicans want to lower taxes for the wealthy even more! When the rich pay low taxes, everyone else has to foot the bill--or important programs and services get cut. It's time to change that.

This petition is regarding a ban on the minimum wage increase that that Fallin signed into law. We just cant make it on $7.25 an hour. The cost of living has increased but Fallin doesnt want to increase the wage for anyone. She thinks its acceptable to earn $7.25 an hour. Lets see her try to feed her family on $7.25 an hour. Middle class families all over Oklahoma will suffer.

  • Carbon Tax: Coordinating Our Efforts to Save the Planet
Installing a low-flow toilet, riding your bike, and reusing grocery bags are worthwhile actions that save energy and inspire others to do the same. However, individual actions are not enough to have an effect on climate change. Yesterday the UN released the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. According to the report, greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by 40-70% by 2050 to hold the global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius. Cuts this large will require an international effort, but the US is the world's largest economy and we can and should be leaders on this issue. A carbon tax would be the quickest and most efficient way for the US to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. The carbon tax should be revenue-neutral, meaning that any revenue generated from the tax should be offset either by reductions in distortionary taxes (such as income tax) or government transfers.

  • Bring "Years of Living Dangeously" to a major network.
This series provides stories of how climate disruption is already affecting people's lives. The science of it all is well-explained, verified. While Showtime is to be commended for airing the series, it really needs to be picked up by a network that more people are able to watch. An informed public is crucial to dealing with the crisis impacting our climate.

The sooner the better for Congressional Term Limits. This would help stem campaign finance, bought-off representatives are not working for all of us, just their "sponsors" ( i.e. corporations, lobbyists, etc.).

  • Congress: Label GMOs with the Right-To-Know Act
For years, activists and environmentalists have pushed to make GMO labeling the norm, letting Americans know about the genetically engineered crops and mutant products stocking their shelves. That dream came true when Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Peter DeFazio introduced the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act to require GMO labeling this April. But Rep. Mark Pompeo has other plans — including teaming up with Monsanto to drive food regulation back to the Dark Ages. Pompeo's bill has been nicknamed the DARK Act: Denying Americans the Right-to-Know. Backed by the "Big 6" chemical companies like Monsanto and Dow, Pompeo wants to block both states and the FDA from requiring GE labeling, allow "natural" foods to have genetically engineered ingredients, and label animal feeds non-GMO even if they're packed with them. Ninety-three percent of Americans want GMO foods labeled, and evidence is growing that the health and environmental risks of pesticide-coated fraken-crops are much more serious than the Big 6 told us.
