• Kansas Lawmakers: Bring Back Due Process Hearings For Teachers!
The Koch brothers just got the Kansas legislature to kick public education to the curb. This weekend, Kansas conservatives tackled inequities in public school funding to push for an elimination of due process for teacher firings and the start of mass layoffs. Due process hearings protect Kansas teachers from arbitrary firings. Denying this right to teachers leaves them at the mercy of any angry parent or corrupt administrator — and conservatives, paid for and backed by the Kochs that got them elected, rammed the change through by voting in a covert 4am meeting! Kansas Democrats and the teachers union are fighting to challenge this bill's legality and stop the Kochs from ruining Kansas students' educations. But they need our voices to make their fight stronger!

  • It's time to fight back against on-campus assaults!
“The price of a college education should not include a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted." Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Claire McCaskill are tired of colleges ignoring sexual assault, flouting survivor protection laws, and blaming victims for their rape. They have a plan to enforce the Clery Act, which requires colleges to disclose assaults on and off-campus, bolster Title IX protections that provide staff for survivors, and expand the Violence Against Women Act to better protect students. But they need appropriations subcommittee chairman Sen. Tom Harkin to sign on for the money needed for the Department of Education and Office of Civil Rights to get it done — and if we don't speak up, college assaults will continue to be an everyday horror ignored by millions. Will you call on the chairman to put an end to college sexual assaults?

  • Comcast lobbyist David Cohen says he hasn't heard any "rational, knowledgeable voices" objecting ...
You'd think Comcast super-lobbyist David Cohen might show some class. Maybe he'd even be humble knowing that 52 percent of Americans think Comcast's merger with Time Warner is a bad idea. Instead, Cohen says he hasn’t heard any “rational, knowledgeable voices” opposed to the merger. So much for humble. Let's tell David Cohen that millions of very knowledgeable, very rational people oppose this merger. It’s rational to oppose giving Comcast an untold amount of market power. And it's rational to be worried about the implications this merger has for privacy, freedom of speech, and the open Internet. And we remember when Comcast got busted for violating Net Neutrality--which makes us pretty knowledgeable. We know about their data caps and their plans for complete media domination. And we also know Comcast was just voted the worst company in America! Let's wipe that smirk off Cohen's face. Just add your name to our letter to Comcast's top lobbyist, David Cohen. We'll pass on your very knowledgeable and rational message that this merger is awful.

  • Congress: Repeal Obama's anti-voter finance ban!
We've barely recovered from McCutcheon vs. FEC. We're still fighting Citizens United. And now we have a new enemy: President Obama just signed a ban on the public funding of presidential conventions. If you were looking for a way to increase the dependency of crooked politicians on mega-rich donors, you just got your wish. Obama's law just dismantled what was left of an alternative public financing model set up after Watergate specifically to combat the rich drowning out the poor, allowing taxpayers to chip in a bit each year to balance corporate spending. If we let this go without a fight, we might as well give up the battle to reclaim our democracy now. Please, join us in calling on Congress to repeal this order, and stop the wholesale dismantling of campaign finance reform in the US!

  • Hillary Clinton: Pledge to appoint Supreme Court Justices that will reverse McCutcheon
drowning our democracy in corporate cash. And if we don't pay attention to who might be replaced on the bench, things could get even worse. The Supreme Court must reverse course. We're calling on Hillary Clinton, presumed frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, to pledge she will only appoint Supreme Court Justices who will reverse this abomination of a decision. If Citizens United was beginning, then McCutcheon is only the next step on the road to abolishing our campaign finance laws. And there's little doubt that many of the country’s most powerful donors want nothing less. We can't let it get that far. Clinton -- like all the 2016 Presidential candidates -- must know that this is an issue that matters to the American people. And just as importantly, she must understand that if victorious, she will bear an enormous responsibility in repairing our elections system. Now is the time to make that clear. Sign on and urge Hillary Clinton to pledge to only appoint Supreme Court Justices that will repair our elections and reverse this awful decision.

  • Sign the petition: Urge the DOJ to investigate new Florida voting rule which closes all restrooms...
Remember how bad the voter lines were on Election Day in 2012? In Florida, some stayed in line for over six hours. And now, they won’t be able to use the bathroom. The Miami-Dade County Elections Department has quietly implemented a policy to close the bathrooms at all polling facilities. Voters would have to choose between voting, or using the bathroom. Make no mistake about it. This is a political scheme to depress voter turnout in a heavily Democratic county, and it’s also probably illegal for violating basic disability law. Sign the petition: Urge U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate this new Florida voting rule which closes all restrooms at polling places on Election Day.

  • End the prisons for profits practices that are turning this country into a police state.
The United States has the highest per capita prison population in the world. Our rights and freedoms are rapidly being taken away as corporations find ways to profit from destroying individual rights and from the imprisonment of as many individuals as they can. The "prison for profit" corporations are destroying many peoples lives, destroying families, instituting ways to force laborers to work in unsafe conditions for virtually no pay (legal slave labor), and is causing many non-violent individuals such as illegal migrant workers to be be imprisoned for excessively long periods of time. This country was once a shining example of freedom and justice. It is rapidly becoming a prison state where corrupt corporations are able to profit from the destruction of countless lives.

  • Public Hearing , gas explosion in East Harlem by National Transportation Safely Board
None of us are safe while Con Edison , which reaped over $ 1 billion in profits in 2013, neglects to repair the infrastructure of gas pipe. We need some guarantee that the landlords , Con Ed,or City who ignore known safety risks that lead to families being forcibly removed from their homes will not be allowed to return around and create unaffordable housing development. We need an independent environmental impact study to address the asthma crisis in East Harlem and explore safer for forms of energy
