  • Safeway CEO: Label your GMO foods
We learned how much it takes to buy an election in Washington: $25 per vote. That's how much money the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other outside spending groups spent to mislead voters in thinking I-522's GMO-labeling initiative would be overly complicated. Consumers should have a right to make healthy, responsible, and informed choices about the food we eat. Yet it’s usually impossible to know whether our food contains GMOs. Let's be clear. GMOs aren’t without risk— some are designed for increased pesticides, which have been linked to serious health and environmental effects. And they usually don’t undergo safety testing before being brought to market.

  • Treat all immigrants like Justin Bieber!
Justin Bieber, Canadian teen pop music and heart-throb, has gotten himself out of some hot water in Florida. At approximately 4am this morning, Justin was pulled over by police in Miami after he was caught drag racing in his yellow Lamborghini. After failing a field sobriety test, he confessed to having been consuming alcohol, smoking marijuana, and had taken some prescription pills. Subsequently, he was additionally charged with driving without a valid drivers license and resisting arrest. After making a brief appearance before a judge, his bail was set to $2,500 and was released before a crowd of adoring fans who waited for him outside of the jail. The Bieber experience as an immigrant who made a string of mistakes starkly contrasts what many other immigrants with different statuses in this country experience, particularly undocumented Latinos. Every day, police departments all over the country work together with ICE to maintain 34,000 beds in different private detention centers filled to capacity every day and night. The vast majority of those who are incarcerated in these centers before being deported are Latino, and many of them are in these centers for far less severe infractions than what Mr. Bieber did. We at Presente.org are profoundly inspired by the Bieber experience, as it shows that the justice system may in fact have a soft spot for people who make mistakes. We are calling on the Department of Homeland Security and all police departments to adopt this trend of treating ALL other undocumented immigrants as if they were Justin Bieber.

  • "STOP!! VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE IN DAYCARE(S) !!"
I worked at a pre-school/daycare and seen many things I disagreed with !!Verbal/Mental/Physical abuse that wasn't being reported to the parents. I went to the director/owner with proof, witnesses, testimony and nothing was done !! I quit as of 1/15/14 after only working there for four months, because I WILL NOT BE A WITNESS & OR BE A PART OF VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE TO CHILDREN. I felt it was my duty to contact the parents, no help to the pre-school, I took it upon myself to inform the most affected parents first. When I went to the owner she did "NOT" investigate this matter, nor did she care, because it wasn't affecting her or her family in the least bit. The owner instead stated to me on the day I finally "WOKE UP" & QUIT, she has the nerve to say, " I have known so, and so, for six years and clearly tells me she didn't believe me!!" I thought I was imagining her say that, she then boldly lies to my face and tells me that no one could collaborate my story which in FACT was a lie, three other employees did collaborate as to what I had told her, prior to our meeting. I called the state (pending investigation!) I will not tolerate what this person said and done to these innocent souls. The owner(s) and staff are also responsible for this evil entities actions and are just as guilty if not more so for quieting this evil beings actions!! I will make an example of these people and will not rest until our children get justice.! Oh, and must I mention the owner has the some nerve to serve me with an injunction of harassment, for loving and wanting to protect my class! All I want is the best and healthiest care for their well being!! How do these people sleep at night? I will NOT back off! When I was hired I had a duty and still have a duty to protect these children, I WILL NOT FAIL THEM AS MANY HAVE, BY TURNING A BLIND EYE, THOSE PEOPLE ARE JUST AS GUILTY IF NOT WORST FOR KEEPING THE ABUSE AND LIVING WITH IT, WHAT HAS OUR WORLD COME TO? I KNOW THAT ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, & THAT DIFFERENCE WILL START WITH ME !! I CALLED SEVERAL LAWYERS IN SEVERAL STATES & DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE SOME KIND OF (SERIOUS INJURY) AS IF VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE ISN'T SERIOUS ENOUGH. YOUR CHILD MUST HAVE A BROKEN BONE, HEAD INJURY, BLOOD FORCE TRAUMA, VISIBLE AND MULTIPLE CONTUSIONS, DEATH, ETC. IN ORDER TO SUE AND OR HOLD SOMEONE RESPONSIBLE? Why should it have to get to this point? No, child should have to endure this torture little alone have to go through the agony of mental abuse !! What about mental and verbal abuse, no one takes it serious, until it happens to YOU, or your family? Kids should have rights, too !! They are human beings !! If we don't help, who will? A parent most often never finds out their child is being mentally abused because most children who are being mentally/verbally abused are immune to such torture at the hands of their caregiver/handler because most often daycares except children as young as 3 months, so who knows how long that child has endured verbal/mental abuse? This abuse will play a vital role throughout the child's life. Your child can be verbally/mentally abused without you knowing it, the affects are so hidden in a child's life, that children most often protect the abuser without even knowing it. Most handlers do not have the patience to deal with children, they choose a job in this field for "POWER/CONTROL" these people most often don't have control of their lives so, they must control an innocent child's life. The intent of verbal abuse is often to prove rude, offensive, disparaging, defamatory, slanderous and scornful. It's overall intent is often to degrade the soul and mind of the individual to such a degree that they are without the ability to retaliate, verbal/mental abuse is a form of emtional abuse and, unlike physical abuse, it is not easily seen or detected. This is why this must NOT be tolerated and must be stopped, NOW! The abuse tears down the child, the effects on emotional, social, cognitive and psychological development can be profound. The effects of verbal abuse are immediate as the child internalizes the pain, these effects often extend into adulthood. It can also effect your child's happiness and success thoughout life. Children who are verbally abused have lost their sense of safety, the lack of security, breeds lack of confidence and the ability to feel good about themselves, children verbally defy all authority figures because of this. A child that has been effected will withdrawal from reality and will become depressed, angry, aggression may result in response to the verbal abuse. Over time, a verbally abused child may become verbally abusive toward younger siblings. He may turn on his parents as he ages and verbally abuse them in retaliation. It's learned behavior, we lead by example and unless the cycle is broken, it will likely be passed on from generation to generation. Verbal abuse scars, will be long lasting into adulthood, the hidden scars do not heal on their own. Verbal/mental abuse can have more negative impact then physical abuse, because we figure what we can't see won't hurt us, WRONG. Unresolved self-esteem issues can play out in childhood and even into adulthood. We cannot change the hurts from the past, we cannot change the damage people in daycares have done to children, but we can certainly change who we are now, and help change the future, we need to be the voice for all past, current and or future verbal/mental abused children. Our children are the future, if they have a negative opinion about themselves & if our children have no self esteem, no confidence, no sense of life, plain & simple no hope for the future because of what, one bad evil person implanted into our innocent child's brain year after year, month after month, day after day, hour after hour, minute after minute, second after second, wouldn't you believe what you are being told? (VERBAL & MENTAL ABUSE) A child knows no bet...

  • Support Voting Rights
The Voting Rights Act is one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation Congress has ever passed. Last year's Supreme Court decision weakened critical provisions of it. Right now, Congress can restore those protections of it. Right now, Congress can restore those protections by passing this important bill. Rep. Bishop should support this effort by cosponsoring and fighting for a strong bill.

  • Tell President Obama: announce a "Good Jobs" executive order during the State of the Union!
According to the Washington Post, the president is considering announcing a "Good Jobs" executive order in his State of the Union address next week. It is critical that we call on the White House to take this important step forward. Demos's research has found that the federal government is the nation's leading low-wage employer, with nearly two million private-sector employees paid through federal contracts, grants, loans, concession agreements, and property leases paid $12 or less per hour. Meanwhile, Demos finds that taxpayers spend an estimated $20.8 - $23.9 billion a year to compensate top executives of federal contractors. Despite a proud history of efforts to ensure that employees working on behalf of America are treated fairly on the job, and that companies that have the privilege of doing business with the United States are upholding high standards of employment practice, many federally funded jobs today have been subject to the same race to the bottom that has lowered standards for other work. By signing such an order, President Obama would not only improve conditions for low-paid contract workers but would also give greater momentum to the fight for a federal minimum wage increase that would benefit everyone. Tell President Obama to announce the "Good Jobs" executive order during the State of the Union on Tuesday night.
