    I spend a lot of time along the Mississippi River doing what I love--photographing birds and wildlife. Last year I started noticing a huge increase in the amount of rail activity along the river. I was seeing a lot of mile-long trains carrying nothing but tanker cars. After some investigative work I realized the tanker cars were carrying crude oil from the Bakken Region of North Dakota and Canada. These tanker cars (called DOT-111) have too thin of a skin to withstand most derailments, have valves and controls that are easily ripped off in accidents and do not have crush guards on the front and rear of the tanks.

  • Stop the attacks on Pennsylvania workers' pensions
    We believe switching public workers from a defined benefit plan to a defined contribution plan undermines retirement security and means our state will eventually end up retiring workers into poverty. Trying to fix greater budgetary issues on the backs of workers who did nothing to create the problems is unjust. All Pennsylvanians will be affected by this as local economies suffer when the personal spending of retirees is diminished and tax payers will be harmed as more retirees will need various types of public assistance to support themselves in retirement. We are better than this.

  • Improve the voting rights act!
    I have not been personally affected yet, but the recent erosion of voting rights in neighboring NC is disturbing. Are we trying to disenfranchise the poor, the elderly, and people of color? Voter fraud is really a pretty specious argument when we cannot even get 40% participation in many elections! Phil Roe should fight to allow his under served constituency an unrestricted right to vote.

    My paralyzed son, who is a registered voter, had to spend several days and hired rides to get a picture ID before he could vote. It almost discouraged him. If he proved who he was to register, that should be good enough. Last year's Supreme Court decision weakened critical provisions of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), eliminating important protections for voters across the country. But a new bill in Congress can fix the VRA and restore these protections. Rep. Black should support this bill.
