More News Coverage for Climate ChangeAs a mother and US citizen, I am appalled by how many climate stories are ignored by the major news organizations. It is time to talk about this broadly. Prime time news needs to cover: Major storms, biodiversity declines, resource depletions and regional instability that are all fueled by climate change. Meteorologists need to regularly discuss weather systems and how they are impacted by climate change. This is no longer a debate where climate deniers deserve equal airtime. That misleads the public by diluting the preponderance of supporting evidence. We know that most people are concerned about these issues, but despite the widespread concern, there is a culture of silence. Despite being an enormous, impending threat, climate change isn't being discussed nearly enough. The silence makes it easy for people to use denial or avoidance as their coping strategy, when the effective coping strategies are active engagement and large scale change. I am asking Time Warner and CNN, as the second largest media organization and a trusted news source, to please include regular discussions and news coverage of climate change. These issues are relevant across news categories and only by increasing discussions and awareness can we foster action.495 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Tanya Gamby

Shut Pilgrim! The Cape and Islands are an incredible place to visit, and even more so to live. Unfortunately, our lives here are threatened by the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth which has had numerous leaks lately. The power station has the same design that Fukushima had. Pilgrim pulls over 500 million gallons of water from Cape Cod Bay daily. The water is returned, much hotter, after cooling the reactor, thus killing countless fish and marine organisms which violates the Endangered Species Act. The state has admitted that in case of emergency at the plant, they would close the bridges, cutting off the Cape from any chance of evacuation by land. The plant needs to be closed NOW. Please sign our petition and let Gov. Patrick know you want to protect our beautiful Cape Cod and Islands, and that you want this addressed immediately.2,522 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Susan Smith

Tighter U.S. Gun Legislation to Prevent Homicide, Suicide, and AccidentsYesterday in Austin, TX (October 16, 2013), a 17-year-old student and father of a 1-year-old baby took a gun to school and shot himself at lunchtime in the school courtyard. I am reminded of my own personal gun tragedies every time I hear of killings with guns. The pain and guilt of losing a loved one tragically does not go away. I was 11 when my brother took his life with a family rifle. My severely depressed mother purchased a gun two years later and killed herself. Please help me change gun laws in the U.S.153 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Cecilia Rodriguez

Republicans Attack National Park Service: Your Help NeededThe National Park Service is composed of dedicated men and women who operate our National Park System with the upmost care and without deference to the political leanings of its visitors. Put Science First In Protecting Our Water (Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OA-2013-0582)For years, deniers of sound science have rejected everything from global warming to pollutants in our waterways. This approach has led to a significant rollback in key clean water protections: more than 59 percent of U.S. streams and 20 million acres of wetlands are vulnerable to toxic dumping and pollution. Fortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency has taken steps to address this error by relying on sound science to help restore these key protections. The EPA needs to hear from you: speak out for sound science and clean water. The EPA’s preliminary scientific report confirms that streams, wetlands, and floodplains—regardless of their size or how frequently they flow—are connected to downstream waters. The EPA must finalize this report and follow the science by restoring protections to waters that supply drinking water to 117 million Americans. Simply put, we need stronger protections for these critical watersheds. Your ability to fish in, swim in, and drink clean water is at stake! The Clean Water Act is our nation’s best guard against dirty and contaminated waters. Earthjustice has been working to defend and enforce the Clean Water Act for decades. Please join us in urging the EPA to finalize its Science Report quickly; follow its conclusions regarding the importance of ALL streams, wetlands, and open waters to U.S. waterways; and apply sound science to restore protections to these critical and interconnected water bodies.86 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Chris Espinosa, with Earthjustice

30 MPH Speed Limit on Rt. 172This stretch of 172 is home to hundreds of school children who ride school buses every day. Drivers from NY and CT frequently travel this stretch of road in excess of 50 MPH and there have been multiple accidents over the past several years. For the safety of our children and overall quality of life, let's make Rt. 172 30 MPH like most other roads in our area.158 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Scott Moody

Congress: Stop the Default; Protect Students & Our CountryThe U.S. could default on its loans tomorrow if Congress doesn't raise the debt ceiling and end the shutdown. A default could be a financial disaster. Interest rates on most types of loans are projected to skyrocket. Inevitably, student loans would become a lot more expensive, and future borrowers who take out a new federal loans would be crushed by these rates.1,212 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Iris Maria, I AM NOT A LOAN

Women's Locker Room at the RecIn the Spring 2011 CU Student Government Election, a referendum was passed to “Buff up the Rec.” This was brought to a vote of the students because it was projected to raise student fees approximately $122-125. In voting on the referendum, students were not given specifics of what the new Rec Center would look like, but rather were asked the following yes or no question: “Do you, as a University of Colorado-Boulder student, approve an increase in funding for the extensive renovation and expansion project of the University of Colorado Recreation Center at the rate of $121-125 ($102-104 for construction bonds and $19-21 for operations) per student, per semester, beginning Fall 2013 in student fee dollars and spanning a period of 25 years?” The referendum passed with a vote of, “yes,” and construction began in Spring 2012. While the blueprints and floor plans were presented to CUSG, there was not clear indication that the Women’s Workout area would be removed from the Women’s locker room. In the midst of the “Buff Up the Rec” construction, the Women’s Workout area was taken out of the Women’s Locker Room over the summer of 2013, and there are no concrete plans to create a similar workout area for women elsewhere. After speaking with Gabrielle Krupp, member of the Rec Center Board, she stated that the completed construction will foster a more private workout environment. This has caused temporary concerns for many women who previously used that workout area. Many women in the CU community have expressed that they do not feel comfortable working out in the same weight room as men. Some have even expressed that without the privacy of the women’s workout room they will no longer use rec center facilities to workout. In a recent survey that was conducted by Representative at Large, Coco Wham, women indicated that they would like free weights and mats to be returned to the women’s locker room.167 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Alexis Scobie

Impeach and remove Tea Party Republicans in the U.S. CongressThe purpose of this petition is to communicate to the United States Congress that we, the undersigned, are American citizens who want to impeach and remove from the Congress the following Tea Party Republicans for abuse of power which is harming the American people. Abuse of power is cited in the U.S. Constitution as an impeachable offense. These individuals conspired to force the shutdown of the Federal Government contrary to the will of the majority of the members of the House, the U.S. Senate, and the American people: Representatives: Michele Bachmann, Minnesota Joe Barton, Texas Gus Bilirakis, Florida Rob Bishop, Utah Diane Black, Tennessee Michael C. Burgess, Texas Paul Broun, Georgia John Carter, Texas Bill Cassidy, Louisiana Howard Coble, North Carolina Ander Crenshaw, Florida John Culberson, Texas Jeff Duncan, South Carolina Blake Farenthold, Texas Stephen Fincher, Tennessee John Fleming, Louisiana Trent Franks, Arizona Phil Gingrey, Georgia Louie Gohmert, Texas Vicky Hartzler, Missouri Tim Huelskamp, Kansas Lynn Jenkins, Kansas Steve King, Iowa Doug Lamborn, Colorado Blaine Luetkemeyer, Missouri Cynthia Lummis, Wyoming Kenny Marchant, Texas Tom McClintock, California David McKinley, West Virginia Gary Miller, California Mick Mulvaney, South Carolina Randy Neugebauer, Texas Rich Nugent, Florida Steven Palazzo, Mississippi Steve Pearce, New Mexico Ted Poe, Texas Tom Price, Georgia Phil Roe, Tennessee Dennis A. Ross, Florida Ed Royce, California Steve Scalise, Louisiana Pete Sessions, Texas Adrian Smith, Nebraska Lamar S. Smith, Texas Tim Walberg, Michigan Lynn Westmoreland, Georgia Joe Wilson, South Carolina Senators: Mike Lee (Utah) Jerry Moran (Kansas) Rand Paul (Kentucky) Tim Scott (South Carolina) Ted Cruz (Texas) In order to block the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, a law which was passed in 2010 and subsequently upheld by the United States Supreme Court, the above-named individuals recklessly conspired to force the shutdown of the Federal Government. This shutdown is causing financial, physical and emotional distress and ruin to many thousands of American citizens, including but not limited to: active military service members, military veterans, hundreds of thousands of Federal employees and contractors who have been furloughed and/or are working without pay, providers of essential services, families and children, the elderly, and countless others. The government shutdown has brought uncertainty to the nation's and the world's financial markets, and may result in creating another recession in the United States of America and the entire world. In addition, Representatives Boehner, Cantor, and other Republicans in the United States House of Representatives rigged the rules so that only they or their designees can bring the government shutdown matter to a vote in the House of Representatives. These individuals refused for weeks to bring the matter to a vote. Their abuse of power, and their reckless and irresponsible actions are causing great harm to the American people and the world. Therefore, we petition that the Republican Tea Party caucus members in Congress be impeached and removed from office.99 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Elizabeth Rosenberg
