A law that bans acts of kindnessBy the time I was seven, I had already been placed in 17 different foster homes. I was out of options until a loving gay couple, Greg and Stillman, gave me the family that I had dreamed of. Greg and Stillman took me in as a foster kid and then adopted me when I was eight. If it hadn’t been for my two dads, I might have continued to bounce from home to home for years—without their love and support, I doubt I could have made it to college. But in Nebraska, where we live now, gay and lesbian people are prevented from providing loving homes to kids who need them. Nebraska is one of only three states that still have this type of unfair ban. Today, my dads are helping the ACLU fight this ban in court—but we need to use every means possible to challenge this unfair policy, including public pressure. Tell Governor Heineman to do what’s right for the children of Nebraska.1,005 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Arthur Stewart

Street Lights in Seminole Woods Blvd.My family lives down Seminole Woods and has noticed the lack of street lights and sidewalks down this road. I have 6 siblings, and 5 of them are younger than me. It is a safety hazard for when the sun goes down and families go on bike rides or play outside that drivers may not see the families or the children outside and could possibly get severely hurt.72 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Kaitlyn Adams

Tell Rush Limbaugh to correct the record on faith and climate changeRush Limbaugh recently warned his listeners that “if you believe in God, then intellectually you cannot believe in manmade global warming.” According to Rush, faith-based climate activists simply don’t exist. Imagine Limbaugh’s surprise to learn that there are thousands of us across the country – people of faith who care about God's creation. We need to send a message not just to Rush Limbaugh, but to everyone who believes that faith and climate action are incompatible.99 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Sojourners

Tell Corbett to Release Report on Climate Change and Shale GasThis story from State Impact PA tells it best: http://stateimpact.npr.org/pennsylvania/2013/08/27/dep-attempted-to-supress-controversial-study-that-criticized-shale-gas/ A state report outlining how climate change will impact Pennsylvania is currently a year and a half late – and there’s still no indication of when it will be released publicly. The Department of Environmental Protection missed its legally-mandated deadline to publish the report in the spring of 2012. Today at a meeting of the DEP’s Climate Change Advisory Committee, the department said the report is still going through the review process. However StateImpact Pennsylvania has obtained a copy of the original draft climate report and internal DEP emails, which reveal an attempt by its Policy Office to suppress controversial research that questions the benefits of natural gas. The DEP’s Policy Office wanted a team of Penn State scientists who authored the climate report to remove all references to a 2011 study from Cornell University. The peer reviewed paper, by professor Robert Howarth, has been the subject of intense debate. It concludes that from a climate change perspective, natural gas is dirtier than coal. Although natural gas is much cleaner-burning than coal when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, methane can leak throughout the gas production process. Methane is the primary component of natural gas, and it’s 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas (although it remains in the atmosphere for a much shorter time period). Howarth believes this methane leakage negates any climate change benefits derived from burning natural gas.483 of 500 SignaturesCreated by Lisa

Missouri's Trayvon? Invistagate Judge Joel FahnestockLess than two years ago I had the unfortunate event of losing my job in turn I did what I thought would be a simple thing as requesting through the courts a modification to my current monthly child support ($986.00) to Amy Faber (Caucasus female). During the last year I have personally spent over $10,000.00 (mostly borrowed) trying to get this done not to mention two weeks in jail for not paying her attorney Lyle Odo fees of $5000.00. After much legal wrangling that lasted almost two years here is where I and Khiara stand. Child Support set at $986.00 a month ($15,621.95) Arrears Amy Faber's Attorney's Fees of $26,998.50 Medical bills for Khiara at $1000.00 Warrant with no bail if $21621.95 is not paid by Aug 23rd 2013. No U.S. Military Intervention in SyriaThe members within Congress and the President of the United States cry to the heavens that the United States is in debt and spending must be marginalized. However, our "leaders" always seem to have the money for war and not better schools, social programs, healthcare, et cetera. Signing this petition will send the message that this hypocrisy will no longer be tolerated.58 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Chad Robbins

Please Don't Start Another WarGovernment is becoming too separated from the people, we overwhelmingly do not want another war and this posturing with Syria smells just like the clarion call of WMD in 2002. We the people do not grant the "consent of the governed" in this matter.68 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Bob

Philadelphia City Council: Enact a Ballot Question to Reduce Money in PoliticsOur government is now controlled by corporations and their lobbyists who are more concerned with profits than people. This is negatively impacting our schools, our health and our ability to provide for our families. We need a constitutional amendment to limit the influence of money in politics so that our government works for We, the People, not the corporations.115 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Joan Duckenfield

String Students: the right to a class and seperate performance.Students from all over the world transfer to Lejeune High School; the students with talents in the realm of strings and orchestra are immediately cut out of the music department because it doesn't offer the opportunity to perform or learn in that area. Orchestra is a dying art that should be invested in when the chance presents itself. If not a class, than a club at least; there are students perfectly capable of teaching other students in the same area, even under the direction of the band director. These talented students shouldn't be simply pushed aside.30 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Lidia Ybanez

Cami Anderson: Give Your $50K Bonus to the Students of Newark Public Schools!Newark Public Schools are faced with $57 million in cuts that will force some of our schools to cut their budgets as much as 20 percent. Our children are learning in schools with crumbling infrastructure where plywood doors, collapsing ceilings and water damage are common. Our voices at the local level are excluded and ignored by bureaucrats and politicians in Trenton. Teachers are overwhelmed by class sizes and earn salaries that do not reflect the critical role they play in Newark’s future. Appropriate funding to properly educate our youth is inadequate. Essentially, Cami Anderson has failed to be the outspoken advocate that the Newark Public School system desperately needs in order to be successful in educating and preparing our next generation of leaders. We do not believe that a $50,000 bonus is warranted. Fifty-thousand dollars will not relieve all the stresses faced by the Newark Public School system, but if the state has those funds then local use should be determined by Newark public school students, parents and teachers. There is an opportunity for Cami Anderson to do the right thing and offer those funds back to the community she claims to serve.167 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Trina Scordo

Ratification of the Equal Rights AmendmentThe Equal Rights Amendment was introduced to Congress 90 years ago. Even though a fierce battle for equality was fought during the 70's and early 80's, not enough states ratified the amendment. Therefore, there is nothing in the US Constitution that cements any women's rights, except the right to vote. The time has now come to finish the 90-year struggle!35 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Mary Jo Middlebrooks

Fast Food Industry: We're Not Going to Take it AnymoreWe're mad as hell. And we're not going to take it anymore. Today, right at this very moment, thousands of workers in cities across the country – from Los Angeles, to Peoria, Hartford, Tampa and many more – are on a National Strike against low pay. It's incredible that they joined us. And it's working. By now, everyone knows that fast food employees like me can't make ends meet on $7.25 an hour or barely more. They know how incredibly profitable, and out of touch, the corporations we work for are. They know – you know – that something has to change. Starting now. Help us send the fast food chains we work for a message that they can't ignore. Add your name to our open letter to the top eight fast food chains, right now.
