• Release TPP text to the Public
It is not fair to the American people, who Congress, The Senate and The President are elected to serve to bypass the legislative process and "fast track" an agreement that no one has even been able to see yet! The text that has been leaked so far shows that this goes far beyond simple trade matters. It gives corporations rights over and above our own domestic public policies. This is not how a Democracy should work. Jobs and our safety have to take precedence over the corporate profit machine.

  • End U.S. Military Aid to Egypt Now
The Egyptian military perpetrated a coup against a democratically elected government. Whether you support Islamists or not, they won a free election and are entitled to govern. The military regime has now embarked on a campaign of mass murder--with the help of the $1.3 billion a year in US military aid. Time for this to stop!

  • Congressman Castro, Support a Discharge Petition
Most Americans are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. We or our ancestors arrived to fashion their dreams on this land. Many of us still work tirelessly so that our children and grandchildren may have a better life. The same is true of all immigrants who have come to our country from any nation and under any circumstance. They are willing to work hard and provide for their families in the best way they can. Some have difficulty with a new language; most of us would were we to be transplanted to another country. In short, their dreams are now what our dreams were. For many years our country’s immigration system has been slowed by inefficiency which throws up barriers to new immigrants who want to become citizens. Many are taken advantage of by unscrupulous employers who threaten them and pay them miserly wages. They play on the fact that many of these immigrants have entered the country without proper documentation and are vulnerable, since they can't complain. We all want safe and secure borders. This does mean that we should remain vigilant and create obstacles to undocumented entry into this country. It does not mean that we should create a hyper-militarized zone along our southern border and through the various border communities not unlike what we saw in Iraq during the conflict there. Earlier this year, the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill that is a good first step and a framework for a lasting immigration reform bill. It also includes an onerous amendment, the Corker-Hoeven Amendment, that would cost us about $47 billion over the next ten years to include doubling the number of Border Patrol Agents and also result in the militarization of many of the communities along the U.S. side of the border with Mexico. This is money wasted and money that many believe will eventually find its way into the pockets of various politicians' friends and companies. The House of Representatives "led" by John Boehner, is dragging its feet on any sensible reform legislation. We need to hold his/their feet to the fire when they return from their August Recess. Besides fixing the system so that those who already have been waiting in line for citizenship for far too long have an expedited access through the process, Congress needs to develop a system where those here already who are undocumented, have a reasonable pathway to obtain their own citizenship while avoiding the present practices of breaking apart families.. If the Republicans refuse to bring the Senate bill to the floor for a vote and refuse to introduce their own bill, Democrats can use a tactic called a discharge petition to attempt to move the Senate bill to the House floor for a vote. We urge you to join us in calling on Representative Joaquin Castro from CD-20 in Texas to champion this move toward a discharge petition.

  • Being abused by Child Protective Services
I have been struggling with Child Protective Services for over 3 years, attempting to regain custody of my son, I've completed most of every task that has been handed to me. My case was opened then closed before I could fully complete what they said was required of me. All I want is some justice to be done and for my son to be with his biological mother that care so much for him. My son was removed from me because of rumors, and not facts, I was told he was taken away because of medical neglect, no investigations were completed and no facts were gathered at the time he was taken. Why have me struggle for over 3 years if they never planned on placing my son back into my custody? It feels like the services that were set in place to help parents reunite with their children fail society, as if its better to keep family separated from each other. More help should be provided for parents that care enough to jump through hoops and actually want their children back. This is hard emotionally and has been going on for too long, it feels like I'm getting the run around and that I'll be fighting for my motherly rights for a while. I am a disabled mother of two and I am still capable of doing what normal people are able to do regardless of what I have been told. I also think I shouldn't be forced to pay child support if I'm willing and capable of taking care of my son and want him home with me.I feel like this issue is important for the fact that it happens to a lot of people and help from child services seem to be limited or none at all. I should have been getting more help from services instead of being left to find answers for myself.

  • Dylan’s Candy Bar: Be Sweet To Your Workers
Owned by Dylan Lauren, daughter of famous fashion designer Ralph Lauren, Dylan’s Candy Bar is the largest unique candy store in the world, with $25 million estimated in annual sales. It is widely considered a ‘required stop’ for celebrities visiting NYC, such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Katie Holmes, Janet Jackson, and Madonna. Yet, while our hard work has contributed to Dylan’s success, working for Dylan is no candy land. While Dylan Lauren is the 5th wealthiest heiress in the world, worth $4.6 billion, most of us associates started at less than $10/hour. In fact, at $13.99 per pound, a pound of bulk candy is worth more than our hourly pay. On top of the low wages, our schedules and hours change week to week. Nearly the entire sales staff is part time, yet they expect us to have open availability, making it nearly impossible for us to juggle other obligations such as second jobs, school, and family. They refuse to give us any guarantee of the amount of hours we will work each week, and yet they get angry with us when we look for a second job. The low pay and sporadic scheduling makes it hard for us to do what we do best – provide excellent customer service. We know that Dylan’s can do better, so we decided to get ourselves organized! Unfortunately, when we got together to deliver our own petition to management, they shrugged it off. Ignoring our concerns, they simply told us that any issues regarding compensation could only be addressed in one-on-one meetings with managers and not together as a group. Now we’re taking our petition to the public to show the company that we’re not alone! We are asking Dylan’s for: 1. A Living Wage: Increase hourly pay to $13.99 per hour, the price of just 1 pound of bulk candy 2. Just Hours: More stable scheduling with guaranteed weekly hours for all associates 3. End Favoritism: Establish a clear and measurable path for promotions so that advancement is based on hard work and not favoritism Let Dylan’s know you support our efforts to improve our workplace! • Rep Sam Farr: Lead the comprehensive immigration reform bill forward by supporting a discharge pe...
The Senate passed a strong comprehensive immigration reform bill. Immigration reform will strengthen our economy, keep families together, and offer a clear roadmap to citizenship for nearly 11 million tax-paying, aspiring Americans. As a white 10th generation American, I've had access to the American Dream that hard working undocumented youth and families have a right to as well . I want legislators to stand up for equality and justice for all by giving the 11 million aspiring Americans a fair opportunity to live the American dream.
