• Don't Send $235.7 Million to China
The New York State Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) is investing $235.7 million to renovate the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge over the Hudson River. The problem? They’re sending this money to China instead of investing it here. The MTA is buying 15,000 tons of steel from Chinese-subsidized Anshan Iron and Steel Group and awarding fabrication work to the China Railway Shanhaiguan Bridge Group. Sound fishy? It is. Even though there is a “Buy American” clause, the MTA is trying to get around it by paying for this renovation with toll dollars instead of tax dollars. The MTA should be investing in American products and American workers, not sending money to China. Tell the MTA to reverse course and invest in our workforce.

  • It's time for Senate Democrats to stand up to Republicans
There’s never been obstructionism quite like this before in Congress. Republicans are playing extreme politics and using every last trick in the book to deny President Obama a second term by blocking his executive branch, agency and judicial nominees. And so far Democrats are letting them get away with it -- playing by outdated, 20th century rules. The constitution says it loud and clear: The Senate by majority vote makes its own rules. And right now, we need REAL rules reform, not another watered down "deal" that lets Republicans continue to prevent government from functioning. Senate Majority Harry Reid says he's ready to move forward, but he needs the rest of the Senate Democrats to stand behind him. Sign the petition now to let Senate Democrats know that enough is enough - it's time to do whatever it takes to end the obstructionism.

  • Label GMO in WA State
The long term of effects of GMO foods on health and the environment are all unknown. We should have the right to choose whether we are willing to take the risks of being test subjects.

  • New York Women Can't Wait for Equality Measures!
"No woman should have to choose between her health and her job. Legislators often don’t hear the voice of working women like me. I strongly believe that passing this legislation is taking the right step to creating more balance and fairness in the workplace and society for women as a whole. Let's do it now!" --Armanda Legros, a Long Island victim of pregnancy discrimination at work. Groundbreaking bills in the New York State Women’s Equality Act, including vitally important labor protections, are currently languishing in the New York State Assembly. Unfortunately, the New York State Senate refused to pass a 10-point omnibus version of the Women's Equality Act (which the Assembly previously passed), but we must move forward in order to improve the lives of everyday women across the State. These bills would do a great deal to support women in the workplace and in society. Each day these protections are not law, pregnant women, like Armanda and Yvette (video below), are pushed out of their jobs when they need a minor accommodation in order to stay healthy. Mothers are discriminated against and passed over for promotions. Women continue to take home 84 cents to a man's dollar. We need a way to address these issues, and the bills waiting for a vote in the Assembly would help remedy the problems of income inequality and discrimination in the workplace. The Assembly should honor its legacy of passing progressive legislation for women and not delay in passing these laws that will provide support to women and families across the State! The women and families of New York cannot afford to wait. • Texas State Senators: Oppose SB1
This week, hundreds rallied and many presented testimony in favor of protecting women's access to safe abortion care. The Texas House did not heed warnings about a return to back-alley abortions; indeed, one woman was abruptly ejected for noting that a member who is an ophthalmologist isn't specially qualified to dictate women's health care decisions. Texas lawmakers should do better than this. The nation is watching. Our state should demonstrate that it respects women's personal decisions and work to ensure women's health. Oppose SB1, the omnibus abortion restriction bill.

  • Governor Brown:Ban Fracking in California
Fracking poisons water, one of California's most precious resources. It threatens people's health, the eco-system, and California's huge agricultural economy. The oil and gas industries with their political clout, more insidiously, also threaten our very democracy.

  • Save Pohoiki - Keep Puna Clean and Green
Prior geothermal activity in the Pohoiki area of the Island of Hawai`i has caused serious community harm, resulting in successful lawsuits by more than 100 residents. Hawaii Electric Light Company's present effort to contract for new geothermal development without considering the community's concerns is unreasonable and should be stopped. • Support GMO Labeling in Iowa
Genetic modification alters plant DNA by adding genes from other species to create crops with new and largely unknown effects on the environment and human health. Because of the uncertainties surrounding the safety of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), we feel that consumers should have a right to know whether or not their food has been genetically modified. Two bills, H.F. 463 and S.F. 194, were introduced in the Iowa legislature to label genetically modified (also known as genetically engineered) foods and seed. The legislation would require consumer labeling information for food, providing penalties, and including effective date provisions on genetically modified food and make Iowa a leader in open, transparent and honest labeling of foods in the U.S. This legislation is also a stepping stone to encourage standardized, national labeling. A recent scientific poll taken in Iowa indicated that 91.1% of people supported enacting a GMO labeling law, which is in line with national polls that regularly show that more than 90% of Americans want labeling of genetically engineered foods. Moreover, if you are included in the 91% of people in Iowa who support GMO labeling laws, we encourage you to sign the petition to stand strong for something you truly believe in! • Please Veto SB 154: criminalizes the initiative process
We ask Governor Kitzhaber to veto SB 154, because it would criminalize the initiative process by imposing felony liability on organizers of signature drives, if anyone working on the drive violates any election law or rule, however minor.
