• Gun Control
There are too many guns in this country, there is no reasion why someone should refuse a background check or have the need for guns holding large amounts of amanation.

  • Close Guantanamo
Where is the progressive voice on the illegal detentions in Guantanamo? People are still being detained without trial for over 10 years--and some who have been cleared of wrong-doing are still in detention. I am personally ashamed that my country is perpetrating this injustice.

  • Fair Wages For Harvard's Lowest Paid Workers
The Harvard University Security, Parking and Museum Guards Union represents the lowest paid workforce at Harvard. We are in a protracted struggle to bring our wages and benefits up to the same standards that Harvard pays to the other trade unions and their contract security guards.

  • Tell Congress: Fix the sequester cuts for all Americans
Congress jumped into action last week to protect air travelers – such as themselves – from long airport delays caused by sequestration cuts, but they’ve shown no sympathy for the millions of Americans without a frequent flyer card. Air travel and ending the furloughs at the FAA are important, but the haphazard sequestration cuts are hitting the middle class and our most vulnerable the hardest: with seniors denied access to Meals on Wheels, cancer patients denied treatment, low-income children being kicked out of Head Start, and cuts to unemployment insurance for the millions of Americans unable to find work. It's outrageous. No more balancing the budget on the backs of working families. No more paying for tax giveaways that benefit corporations and the super-wealthy with cuts to vital programs. Tell Congress to fix the sequester cuts for all Americans.

  • Make Online Retailers like Amazon charge Sales Tax
Corporations like Amazon aren't required to pay sales tax while Main Street [Mom and Pop] retailers still do. As usual, the big boys get to play by different rules; and the little people lose on this uneven playing field. We need this sales tax revenue in our states, counties and cities!

  • Support Overtime Pay
For 75 years, the Fair Labor Standards Act has ensured that hourly employees who work more than 40 hours a week are paid overtime pay. It only makes sense—if workers have to spend more time away from their families and on the job, they deserve to be fairly compensated. But John Boehner and Eric Cantor and others in Congress don’t see it that way. The deceptively named “Working Families Flexibility Act,” recently introduced in Congress, would eliminate overtime pay and instead replace it with “comp time,” which would be allocated days off, at the discretion of the employer. This may look nice at first glance, but what it does is encourage employers to force workers to work longer hours, and pay them less for it. Everyone deserves fair pay for the work they do. This bill would cut wages for millions and just make CEOs and Big Business richer. This bill is moving fast and your representative needs to hear from you now. We need you to send a message now and make sure he or she does the right thing and opposes this bill.

  • Students for Solutions on Gun Safety
In 2010, unintentional firearm injuries caused the deaths of 606 people. In fact, almost 3,800 people in the U.S died from unintentional shootings from 2005 to 2010, and 1,300 of these victims were under the age of 25. Furthermore, people of all ages are significantly more likely to perish from unintentional firearm injuries when they live in states with more guns relative to states with fewer guns. On average, states with the highest gun levels had nine times the rate of unintentional firearm related deaths compared to the states with the lowest gun levels. A federal government study of unintentional shootings even found that 8% of such shooting deaths resulted from shots fired by children under the age of six. Additionally, the U.S. General Accounting Office has estimated that 31% of unintentional deaths caused by firearms might be prevented by the addition of two devices: a child-proof safety lock (8%) and a loading indicator (23%). Students for Solutions on Gun Safety is a student run advocacy group which aims to put pressure on gun companies in order to incorporate gun safety technology, such as radio frequency identification, child-proof safety locks, and loading indicators, as part of their business strategies, as well as investing in a safer gun technology. We will be utilizing a moderate approach in trying to get gun manufacturers directly involved in the Gun control debate, as well as take part in promoting the future of gun safety in their respectable products. By doing this, we will still be indirectly protecting citizens’ Second Amendment rights. We believe that by installing new technology into firearms, we as a nation can avoid hundreds of deaths a year.

  • RI Gun Laws
Rhode Island is ranked 8th in the country in regards to it's strict gun laws. From a NRA-ILA study states the fact that 99.8% of legal gun owners never use a gun to commit a crime! So why punish law abiding citizens for the actions of a small minority? That's exactly what these "feel good" bills will do. They would not prevent crime, deter crime, or prevent a tragedy like Newtown!

  • Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine Act!
Introduced in 1949 by the FCC, The Fairness Doctrine required holders of broadcast licenses to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a way that was honest, equitable and balanced. In 1969 it was upheld by an 8-0 vote by the Supreme Court. Since it was repealed under President Reagan in 1985, we have had a proliferation of partisan talk radio, Fox News and the most partisan government of my lifetime. Reinstating the act could be key to bringing sanity back to our politics.

  • Congress: Protect the Valles Caldera National Preserve!
The Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico will lose virtually all protections in 2015 if Congress doesn't include it in the National Park system as a National Preserve. It's urgent that Congress pass Senate Bill 285 as soon as possible to secure the Preserve's future. New Mexico's economy will benefit and this spectacular place will be protected for all time.

  • Victim's Rights
When citizens are innocent victims of violent acts of crime and they are unmarried, expecting mothers or fathers. The Social Security administration makes it very difficult for these children when they are born to receive their parents benefits. The family is already grieving and this makes the process even more difficult and painful for both those that have to be the caregivers of these children who are now left with just one parent or in some cases no parent and the child who may now not have sufficient support during the first 18 years of his/her life. This is an issue many are faced with now that there is a growing epidemic of gun violence among our youth.
