  • End High Stakes Testing for Elementary School Kids!
My daughter attends 3rd grade in a New York City public school. At age 8, she has been taking the kind of standardized test I wasn't expected to take until high school. These tests are causing intelligent children like her, as young as 8 and 9, to be stressed out and hate school! What's worse, the blind, sudden implementation of these tests means that students in my daughter's grade are being tested on material they haven't studied. And teachers are being expected to teach material for which they are not adequately prepared. How is that fair? Challenging children is a good idea. Setting them up to fail by new and arbitrary tests based on standards with dubious educational efficacy for which children have not been prepared is not. And causing children to feel they are stupid and hate school is one of the worst ideas for the citizens of New York State.

  • Overturn legislation crippling our Post Office
Mail service is being cut back 'cause a Republican dominated Congress passed legislation requiring the Post Office to fund Pensions and Benefits 75years in advance; they then gave the Post Office a 10 year window to do this. It is no wonder the Post Office is cash poor; they're paying it all into the Pensions and Benefits. No other business operating in the U.S. is required to do this.

  • Human Rights Enforcement Now
The Charlottesville City Council is poised to water down the proposed Human Rights Commission by not including enforcement authority allowed by the Virginia Human Rights Act. They are currently drafting language for their next meeting February 19 at 7 pm that will essentially turn the proposed Human Rights Commission into a symbolic entity that will not include anti-discrimination protection allowed by the Virginia Human Rights Act for individuals subject to discrimination in employment, housing, credit, public accommodations, and private education as allowed by Law. Influence the drafting of this ordinance now.

  • Certified Training for all Gun Owners.
Concerned citizens have proposed many gun control legislations, but law-abiding gun owners don't want to give up their right to bear arms. So, prove you know how to use them safely. Undergo certified training from a trained professional to show you know how to safely keep and use a firearm. This will help keep firearms from those who should not have them, and training can be pursued as part of a mandatory 30-day waiting period.

It is time for Georgia to join the rest of the country in support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform which includes a pathway to citizenship for our undocumented immigrant neighbors who have worked hard to build this country like our immigrant ancestors (including my Italian ones, who happened to come here "illegally", like many others did of all backgrounds).

  • Use Rainy Day Fund - No New Taxes
The Governor wants to increase gas taxes and other fees. There is over $500 Million in Michigan's Rainy Day Fund. "At least" almost 9% of the citizens of Michigan are unemployed and many more are under employed. Until we see a substantial improvement in our state's unemployment rate we can not accept any new taxes.
