  • Tent City Humanitarian Crisis Lakewood NJ
2/5/13 Asbury Press "NJ: Last week, legal notices were posted announcing that, starting today, authorities would come in and disassemble the camp if the tents had not already been taken down. Eighty people would have been completely homeless. Last year, Superior Court Judge Joseph Foster refused to allow Lakewood to shut down the camp, stating that the residents could not be moved without an alternative place to live. Officials contend that Tent City leaders have not abided by their part of the bargain to forbid more people from moving in. But neither has the county. It hasn’t offered any alternatives, including entering into a partnership with other parties, public or private, to build a county homeless shelter. Before bulldozing Tent City, both the county and the township need to come up with alternatives for those who find themselves, literally, out in the cold. Some of these residents have substance abuse problems and/or mental illness, and have been reluctant to leave Tent City. But many have fallen on bad luck and hard times. All of them need some help. Long-term homelessness may be a tough nut to crack, but what is becoming increasingly clear is that Lakewood simply lacks the will to keep its citizens safe — in Tent City and in the township’s thousands of dilapidated rental houses. And Ocean County lacks the desire to use anything more than an iron fist to deal with the homeless in its midst. A judge properly ruled that alternative housing must be provided before Tent City can be razed. That has yet to happen. Authorities must, as a matter of basic decency, provide a shelter or some alternative before sending in the bulldozers.

  • Veterans Deserve To Have Veteran's Day Off
Currently only those who work in government or banking positions get the day off. Most veterans who want to take the day off must use paid time off. As a veteran who honorably served my country for eight years, I feel it's time we get to take the day off, without using vacation time to do so.

  • Pennsylvania: Let's Officially Acknowledge Abraham Lincoln
As a writer for a local paper, I learned that there is no federal recognition for Abraham Lincoln. An effort to include him in Presidents' Day failed at the federal level and he is only acknowledged by a handful of states. This is a travesty. In this 150th Anniversary year of Gettysburg, I think it's time to hold him in the esteem he deserves and officially include him in Presidents' Day.

  • Atlanta City Council: No Banishment of Prostitutes!
"The Atlanta Police Department has asked City Council to enact legislation to amend an ordinance that would mandate banishment of individuals convicted of prostitution from designated “Areas of Prostitution,” increase the mandatory minimum sentence for a first offense from 15 days to 180 days and upholds steep and unreasonable fees for those convicted. Atlanta is known as the city too busy to hate; we should not be also known as the city who banishes citizens, especially the community's most vulnerable members. As a city, we should focus efforts and resources on real solutions that address the underlying causes behind prostitution such as sexual victimization, substance abuse, mental illness and financial desperation. Other cities have developed programs which combine curbing demand with the services and programs which allow for sex workers to leave the streets for good and find legitimate employment. We urge the City of Atlanta to investigate these successful models, and reject the ill-conceived Banishment Ordinance.

  • NJ pols: Keep senior property tax breaks intact
After Sandy, balancing budgets in New Jersey at the state, county and municipal levels will be challenging. The property tax rebates for seniors and other moderate-income homeowners, and the tax freeze for seniors, have fluctuated in recent years as governors and legislators .look for ways to reduce costs. Those who benefit from these protections need to tell their lawmakers: Hands off!
