As a Veteran, I am personally disgusted by every single member of the US House, Senate and Presidential administration's inability to pass a satisfactory budget in a timely fashion. If our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen aren't getting the compensation they were guaranteed (vis a vis: 3 square meals a day), and our veterans are unable to secure work and/or the contractually guaranteed benefits they are entitled to, then the officers of government whose jobs only exists due to the continued sacrifice of volunteer warriors should cease to draw payment and benefits immediately.

For me, the issue is not so much gun control as gun safety. In the US, we have an epidemic of gun-related deaths and injuries. The US, with about 5% of the world’s population, own more than 50% of the world’s guns. We have one of the highest murder rates of any nation. We have a large number of accidental deaths with guns. I believe that the issues of gun safety is similar to the issue of automobile safety, and that a system of regulations on gun ownership paralleling the regulations on automobile safety is appropriate. In addition, every gun owner should carry liability insurance just as automobile owners do. Such liability insurance should be expensive enough that ownership of many guns is discouraged. The incidence of gun-related accidents in the homes of law enforcement officials is significantly less than that in the homes of others. One of the ready sources of unregistered guns used in crimes is gun theft. We need a long-term goal of having every gun registered and linked to its owner.

Working in social services for over 22 years, I have watched programs for the poor and mentally ill lose funding and support. It is devastating to watch the poor and mentally ill lose the ability to be served. I have also watched how some people's desire for individual freedoms appear to trump the freedoms of the masses. Gun ownership is one of these individual freedoms that has many times impacted the freedoms of the masses. We witness this everyday in the violence we see and hear about. When we take care of those who cannot take care of themselves, we celebrate the freedoms of everyone.

It's unfortunate that there are no extensions in place for individuals like myself whose 4th tier was dropped. If extensions are in place, why aren't there any extensions for people who lost their 4th tier as part of this Fiscal Cliff deal?
