My name is Maria Canet, and I am a professional accountant. I’m Latina and an American citizen with more than 30 years of professional experience filing taxes in New York state. I have a small business in Jackson Heights, Queens with over 1000 individual and small business clients. As we all know, President Joe Biden, on March 11, 2021, signed a law that was called the Economic Rescue Plan (“the Plan”) whose objective has been to provide economic relief to Americans. An important benefit of this plan is the expanded minor child tax credit. To qualify for this credit, the child's parent / guardian must have filed their 2019-2020 taxes. Also, other requirements must be met to qualify. It is worth mentioning that what is called "the expanded tax credit for minor children" is an anticipated sum of what could correspond to the taxpayer in the taxes that must be presented next year for the 2021 period. In other words, it is not a stimulus as they have called it, but an advance on account of the tax credit per child that qualifying taxpayers will have in 2022. As an accountant with extensive experience and a very broad portfolio of clients who qualify for this benefit, my professional opinion is that the Plan has serious flaws such as those detailed below: 1) This Plan, being an advance, will be ratified or rectified by the IRS when taxpayers file their 2021 tax returns. Taxpayers will most likely have less reimbursement than expected and that generally generates an attitude of dislike. 2) Many taxpayers do not agree with this "credit" and choose not to collect it because the amount is not important and does not solve economic problems, such as housing and work. Many clients of mine have already chosen this route. They prefer not to collect because their child tax credit for next year may be noticeably reduced. 3) The IRS is going to have to spend a lot of unnecessary money adjusting its website programs and other programs to the new legislation that is coming out in this regard. 4) The incentive does not include taxpayers who do not have children. 5) Many surveys carried out show that 70% of those surveyed do not agree that this benefit is considered a stimulus because it is an advance or advance on account of the child credit that taxpayers will receive in 2022. Therefore, I want to express my professional opinion based on my solid experience with many taxpayers who qualify for this benefit. The credit must be a real stimulus payment, not an anticipated sum on the 2022 tax credit.

Further, welcoming people fleeing persecution at the point of a gun isn't the America I want to live in. Joe Biden is the commander-in-chief of every state's National Guard. His authority supersedes any governors'. Biden can nationalize the South Dakota National Guard, bring them back from their border deployment, and end the mercenary precedent set by Gov. Noem. In 1954, Eisenhower nationalized the Arkansas National Guard during the "Little Rock Nine" Crisis. In 1963, JFK nationalized the Alabama National Guard during the "standoff at the school door" crisis. Biden can do the same with your support.

The US Department of Homeland Security sent a low-flying helicopter to aggressively scatter those protesting Line 3 in Minnesota — a massive proposed oil pipeline that would infringe upon Indigenous treaty rights and bulldoze hundreds of critical waterways used by the local Ojibwe people. It’s no surprise that law enforcement is taking such extreme and dangerous measures to protect Big Oil. Indigenous people have long been criminalized for protesting construction projects that threaten their basic needs and fighting for future generations to be able to exercise their basic rights. President Biden has the executive authority to put an immediate end to Line 3 construction — after all, he cancelled the Keystone XL pipeline during his first week in office.1 We need you to raise your voice and tell him that he must do the same with Line 3. Sign the petition: Biden must use his executive authority to halt Line 3 construction immediately! Indigenous people have a right to clean water, as well as a right to protest — and Big Oil is threatening both. Following the helicopter incident, the Homeland Security task force claimed that they were only trying to send a dispersal message, and that kicking up debris in an attempt to terrorize protestors was unintentional. But US law enforcement has long used helicopters as a scare tactic. A year ago, under Trump, an army helicopter was flown over a Black Lives Matter protest in DC, an act that was later deemed a misuse of a military aircraft. The helicopter at Line 3 was a terrifying 20 feet off the ground — a violation of the Code of Federal Regulations.2 It’s totally unacceptable that the Biden administration would use such aggressive tactics to intimidate those fighting for their basic rights but not intervene on behalf of them. Canadian energy firm Enbridge plans to bulldoze beneath previously undisturbed, sacred sections of the Ojibwe watershed. If built, Line 3 would ship 760,000 barrels of oil each day, carrying bitumen, a heavy oil that sinks in water and therefore nearly impossible to clean up.3 Biden could swiftly direct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the project’s water crossing permit, effectively stopping construction immediately.
