Nelson arrived in the US from Ecuador in 1992 and has not left since. He’s a hardworking family man and has dutifully checked into INS/ICE for many years- always having his work permit approved and getting told he “is not a priority for deportation” since he has no criminal record. At a routine check-in on a chilly day last October, Homeland Security put a large black electronic monitoring device on Nelson's ankle and told him to fly to a country he has not seen in 26 years, leaving his loving partner and 3 minor kids behind. Nelson could not leave his family and so he sought refuge. He has been living in the pastor’s office at First and Summerfield United Methodists Church, located on the New Haven green, ever since. Homeland Security’s arbitrary decision to separate this kind and loving family is another example of family separation happening in our local communities, in addition to family separation at the border. There is no compelling reason to break up Nelson’s family. It's unnecessary. It’s cruel. Nelson’s children have suffered tremendously the past year. He’s missed apple picking, fishing outings, hikes, parent/teacher nights, Easter, and Christmas. Nelson’s oldest daughter turned 16 without her dad home- and little Brandon turned 6. Arlly, who turned 13, finds it hard to concentrate on her schoolwork. Kelly has nightmares and Brandon continues to ask why his father can’t return home, as he tries to understand why this happening to his family as best he can. Every day that Nelson remains in sanctuary and away from his family, is another day of trauma for them all. It’s time to end this cruel family separation at the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. It’s time to demand that ICE allow Nelson OUT OF SANCTUARY so he can take care of his family while his lawyers continue to pursue his path to legal status. ICE has the discretion to grant Nelson a stay of removal and we are asking that they recognize and END the harm and trauma being inflicted on this family. Tell ICE- STOP SEPARATING FAMILIES! I got tired of being scared or not knowing what to do to help my son. I fear for my son in public schools; that's why he is now homeschooled. But just because he is doing better, don't take the damage the school or the principal did to my son and many kids like him.we also need more security and surveillance cameras in schools i fear for my one year old thats going to attand school in a few yrs. ima do my best to try to get her in a chartter school and that's not easy parents please let's do something. The city's Mission Canyon Bridge Project is very flawed. This is being driven by one more ambitious grant project. The Council only voted to look at options, they are not obligated to continue beyond the bridge team's proposals. This Bridge does not have to be replaced. The most recent structural inspection by the Ca Dept of Transportation completed 3/15/2021 determined the Bridge remains safe and strong. Only one recomendation noted the scour in the cement needed maintenance which was also noted back in 2015. Stucturally obsolete simply means, they don't make them like this anymore, to expensive and they don't have the craftsmen of over 100 years ago. Traffic moving at 25 mph on the bridge is not slowed at either end of the Bridge, the Rose Garden on one end of it or Rocky Nook park on the other in this "share the road" corridor. Already a "Vision Zero " corridor, there are no accident statistics that support the need for a new wider bridge which would result in widening the roadway and increase traffic speed . Further, this is a “share the road” Corridor which means “one after the other.” this includes the bridge area where bicyclists have the the same traffic rules and are on the same level as motorists. We are pleased that the City finally did the suggested maintenance repairs to the road surface and foot bridge this past summer of 2020 that had been recommended as far back as the 2011 inspections. This bridge was completely refurbished in 2008 by Santa Barbara Public Works Department was found it to be structurally sound, in good condition and may be left in place. Taxpayer's dollars could be better spent by both the City and County by better maintaining the existing footpaths and pedestrian crossings near Rocky Nook Park. This proposed 11 million dollar project threatens the special historic landscape in the surrounding area that goes back to the Chumash era and the Mission Creek endangered Steelhead Trout Restoration Program. The bridge has withstood the test of time. Not even a crack, with the 1925 earthquake of 6.8 magnitude that heavily damaged the Historic Mission and demolished most of downtown. Fire evacuations thru the Mission Canyon Corridor over the years have all gone smoothly with no problems. Further background. How did we get here? The opposition, a small neighborhood group effort known as “Safe Passage”, years ago had a public workshop to give ideas to the City to discuss possible improvements for the Mission Canyon Corridor. Adding new pedestrian path and bike lanes were some ideas. The unanimous consensus on record, however, was not to alter the Historic Bridge over Mission Creek. In 2016, the City and County Public Works Department’s joint application to fund new pedestrian and bike lanes was rejected by the State Active Transportation Program (ATP) for funding in this designated “share the road” corridor where bicyclists have the same rights and rules as vehicles. With no safety justification, the City of Santa Barbara was not willing to fund the project. The Santa Barbara Police and Sheriff’s Department’s records showed no deaths or reoccurring accidents on record through the corridor, compliant with the City’s Vision Zero Policy. The City discovered, however, they could qualify for 11 million dollars of federal funding under the Federal Highway Administration if they replaced/rehabilitated the Historic Mission Creek Bridge. The bridge project qualifies for funding only because the bridge is classified as “structurally obsolete”. This simply means that they do not build bridges this way anymore. The whole plan was drastically changed to qualify for this new tax payer’s source of funding. The City Council on 5/22/18 directed transportation with a new plan and moved ahead with this pork barrel project against Transportation’s recommendation to secure bridge funds even though it was not consistent with the majority of feedback staff had received at public outreach efforts.

UPDATE: May 15, 2024 BACKGROUND The latest mass shootings in Nashville (Covenant School), Highland Park, Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX only serve to reinforce that a federal ban on military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines needs to pass Congress and be signed by the President. Assault weapons and high capacity magazines are easily available for civilians to acquire in the U.S. Weapons of war have no place in our society. In addition, these military-style weapons and high capacity magazines are the choice of domestic terrorists and other shooters in the vast majority of mass shootings that have taken place across our country. We do not want or need politicians' thoughts and prayers - we want action now! Military-style assault weapons and large capacity magazines have no place in civilian society and are only designed to kill and injure large numbers of people in a short period of time. We cannot allow the daily carnage in our country to be the new normal. Support legislation by Senator Feinstein (S.25 ) and Rep. On any given day, 122,000 people are held in solitary confinement units in jails and prisons throughout the United States, usually as punishment for some type of infraction – often for infractions as minor as possession of too many postage stamps. People of color are disproportionately subjected to isolation, as are those with mental health needs. The length of time in solitary ranges from a few days to decades. People who’ve been held in solitary have likened it to being buried alive. In 2011, the United Nations declared that solitary confineybeyond 15 days constitutes torture. We, the undersigned Helping & Health professionals, question the ethics of health worker participation in the practice of Solitary Confinement. In particular, mental health professionals play a vital role in this practice, as they are routinely called upon to assess the mental status of those held in solitary, to provide psychiatric medication, and to advise correctional personnel as to those at high risk for suicide. Ironically, solitary confinement itself creates and exacerbates mental disorders, yet we are forced to become enablers to this grueling punishment. We call upon the governing bodies of our professions to set mandatory standards for those assigned to these units and to denounce Solitary Confinement in its current form, as it is in direct violation of our Codes of Ethics, which call upon us to uphold the dignity and humanity of all people. They have provided beauty along the Indian River Lagoon for hundreds of years without any issues to those who have visited. The leaves of an oak tree absorb airborne pollutants. One tree can absorb up to 10 lbs. of air pollution in a single year. They stabilize the soil preventing erosion. Since taking office this term, Trump and Republicans have spent the past year terrorizing our communities and cutting health care for millions across the country. At the same time, billions of dollars are being funneled ICE and military funding. The truth could not be more clear: the United States has the money to fund health care for every American, but the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are simply choosing not to. Americans are ready for change. In a recent survey, it was revealed that 65% of voters support Medicare for All. People feel the pain of these high costs every single day. It’s time for Democrats to be BOLD and fight for Medicare for All. Our livelihoods and our futures are on the line. The health care crisis is impacting every single one of us. But together, we can fight for a future that provides every person with the health care they deserve.

This week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals released a ruling on Texas v United States that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program is unlawful, sending the fate of the program back to Judge Hanen in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas to further decide. DACA is an administrative relief program that temporarily protects eligible immigrant youth from deportation and grants them work permits. While DACA renewals remain open for now, Judge Hanen has ruled against DACA before, and a negative ruling would devastate millions of people, including DACA recipients, immigrant youth, our communities, and our country. DACA was won through the organizing of thousands of young people of color, who have remained resilient despite incessant anti-immigrant attacks. This fight is far from over – we need to step up to have their backs against anti-immigrant, Republican-appointed judges by demanding permanent protection for all Dreamers and immigrant youth.  But speaking out is not enough. Congress must act to provide permanent protection, such as citizenship, before it’s too late. DACA is right and legal and has helped hundreds of thousands of young people finish school, apply for work permits, and be protected from detention and deportation. The Republicans in congress have attacked DACA since its inception, and this conservative court decision affirms just how relentless Republicans are. Deportations rip families and our communities apart, and Congress has the power to protect our immigrant communities immediately by delivering permanent protections, like citizenship. Inaction or opposition from members of Congress is unacceptable and will be viewed as support for keeping our immigrant communities vulnerable. UPDATE: This Petition was started a few years ago after a fatal accident on Highway M in Barnhart, Missouri. That particular accident involved a mother of a student killed after dropping her son off for the day. At that time, the petition was setup, news channels were contacted and many communications were had over the following months with MoDot official, Judy Wagner. The request was submitted to Install traffic lights at Hwy M /St Lukes Church Rd and Hwy M / Moss Hollow Road AND DENIED AT THE TIME WITH MANY REASONS WHY THEY WOULD NOT DO THIS, the main reason given was that the install of traffic lights would cost too much at around $1 million. NOW THE J-TURN project is estimated to cost $1 million. Also stated that stop lights do not work. ROCKPORT School has a stoplight in front of their school as do many other emergency houses in the area that just have flashing lights during the day and become operational during PRIME HOURS needed such as morning and evening rush hours for school and those leaving for and coming home from work. The emergency houses would also have access to have the lights operate when they are in need to leave for emergencies. There are First Responder Houses (Antonia Fire Protection District and Rock Township Ambulance District House 4) as well as Antonia Middle School at those intersections. This results in a large number of school buses and families with children being forced to pull out onto Hwy M, crossing multiple lanes of traffic. These intersections absent of traffic lights with the factor of high speeds by drivers has proven to be hazardous AND CONTINUES TO BE HAZARDOUS TWO YEARS LATER WITH NO CHANGES BY LEGISLATURE AND MODOT. The amount of accidents due to high-speed and excessive traffic on Hwy M is becoming more frequent at both of these intersections, resulting in fatalities and injuries. First Responders were involved while attempting to respond to a call, resulting in injuries and delay for those needing the fire department. There are a number of families in both of these areas that send their children on school buses that are given no other option than to merge across a four-lane highway to transport the children to and from school. At Moss Hollow and Highway M, the traffic coming and going has increased now that the new Estates at Moss Hollow is complete and close to 100 new families moved into the area. (ADDING MINIMUM 100 NEW DRIVERS DAILY). There are MANY kids approaching the driving age so new drivers will be embarking on those intersections as well. Let's take safety into consideration and push Jefferson County to install traffic lights and NOT the proposed J turns AT BOTH INTERSECTIONS for the residents of Barnhart AND SLOW DOWN THE SPEED LIMIT IN A SCHOOL ZONE. As of June 2019 I was informed by Judy Wagner that the proposed construction review was being added to the “ Statewide Transportation Improvement Plan for review.” She informed me that in December 2019 they had met with families in Williamsburg to address this issue and I wa stood other affected subdivisions, including Fountains would be contacted in Spring 2020 to have community forum... I can only assume due to COVID that didn’t happen. CONSIDERATION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN FOR ADDITIONAL RESIDENTS AT MOSS HOLLOW AND THE CONTINUED POSSIBILITY OF GROWTH ON THE ANTONIA CAMPUS, FUTURE ADDITION OF NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, INCREASING TRAFFIC ON ST LUKES CHURCH ROAD SIGNIFICANTLY SO THIS WARRANTS MAKING CHANGES TO INTERSECTIONS AND LOWERING SPEEDS ALONG HIGHWAY M FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE AND OUR CHILDREN. J turns will greatly affect emergency crews, residents and school bus transportation. THIS PETITION WILL ONCE AGAIN BE SHARED WHEN SIGNED AFTER A FEW WEEKS IN HOPES OF EXPRESSING CONCERN AS A COMMUNITY AND GETTING SOMETHING DONE SOONER THAN TWO YEARS FROM NOW.
