The NY times editorial board wrote yesterday about the importance of a shelter-in-place order. They made such a great argument that I decided to make a petition out of it because I also believe it is time for President Trump to prioritize the wellbeing of humans over the health of our economy. They emphasize why it's so important for President Trump to sign such an order. "Once he does, and governors follow his request, there will be time to debate how soon some controls might be lifted, or how soon certain people, like those under a particular age, might be free to resume something like normal life. There will be more time then to develop palliative treatments, and more time for the federal government to order up the test kits and ventilators needed nationwide. There will be more time to gather data about which regions, and which people, are most at risk. The coronavirus can spread so quickly that to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, the restrictions need to be sweeping, they need to be uniform across jurisdictions and they need to be put in place now. Everyone shares Mr. Trump’s concern for the economy. But this is not a moment for mere salesmanship, for conjuring a cheerful vision rather than facing reality. It’s a moment for providing a plan. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said he’d “love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter,” which falls this year on April 12. Who wouldn’t? But wishing will not make it so. This crisis has not turned a corner — it hasn’t even hit yet. Rather than raising false expectations of a rapid and full return to business as usual, the president needs to be pursuing even more drastic measures. He should announce that, within 24 hours, all nonessential businesses should be shut and residents directed to remain in their homes except for vital trips out, such as to obtain food or medical care. Provisions can be made for people to walk in outdoor public spaces, so long as they maintain a distance of at least six feet. Two weeks from now, with more testing, we will also have a far better sense of where infections are clustered if more people confine their movements to a limited number of places Federalism is integral to American government, but the administration needs to get serious about running a coordinated national response. All this may seem like an overreaction to a health crisis that many Americans aren’t yet feeling. But though it has already wasted time and opportunities to contain the coronavirus, the United States still has a chance to apply hard lessons learned by China, Italy and other nations. A nationwide lockdown is the only tactic left to parry a viral adversary that is constantly on the move, and to buy the time for medical workers to prepare for what comes next." As hard as it will be to endure such an order. It is time for all of us to be willing to do such a sacrifice if we want to come out of this pandemic crisis as soon as possible. As of March 25, North Carolina has 504 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with the highest number in Wake County, and we just had the first patients die of the disease. Our hospitals are being overwhelmed by patients asking for tests, and they have a lack of the proper equipment--including masks and gloves--to treat those infected by the virus. Cases of coronavirus in Wake County have grown exponentially in a week alone, and we don't have the tests necessary to see the true extent of the pandemic. The situation is so dire that health officials are telling people with mild symptoms to stay home. If left unmitigated, the coronavirus could kill millions of Americans. Epidemiologists agree that the only way to significantly stem the pandemic is to stay home, especially in areas that are experiencing community spread as Wake County is. That is why Wake County has issued the stay-at-home order, but it can only get compliance in Apex if Mayor Gilbert signs on. The order is not a prison sentence--we will still be able to get necessities and exercise outdoors. Rather, it provides businesses and families with the guidance we need to know how to act in these trying times. It's the responsible way to let our health system do its job. In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, New York Gov. Cuomo is exploiting the forced labor of incarcerated people to make hand sanitizer but is doing nothing to protect them. In his proud announcement that Corcraft, a state-run corporation operating in state prisons, is manufacturing hand sanitizer scented like a "very nice floral bouquet," he casually left out the fact that the people work for Corcraft are paid less than one dollar per day. And to add insult, people in prison may not even be able to use the hand sanitizer themselves because, according to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, anything with alcohol content is contraband.  The virus has already made its way into jails and prisons across the state and is wreaking havoc. Riker's Island has at least 40+ cases, an employee at Sing Sing prison tested positive, and the first incarcerated person to test positive is at Long Island county jail. And these are just the cases we know of. Incarcerated people need protection, not exploitation! People locked in prisons deserve safety and wellness just as much as every other New Yorker. Yet, instead of ensuring that, Cuomo has been doing everything to treat incarcerated people with complete disdain -- undeserving of basic rights and human dignity. He has refused to take up the vast majority of clemency petitions and expand parole and medical release for elderly incarcerated people personally blocked the passage of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act, allowed New York State to continue to operate under a Jim Crow-era voting law that prohibits incarcerated people from voting, and is currently championing rollbacks to recently enacted bail reforms that would expand the jail population.  Prisons and jails are places where a vulnerable population is forced into close quarters, healthcare is poor, and access to soap, sanitizer, toilet paper is limited at best. Inside a prison or jail, it is near impossible to contain an outbreak of infectious disease. This puts both incarcerated people and the people who work in jails at health risk.  We need your support to make sure Cuomo hears this message loud and clear. People locked in prisons and jails are extremely vulnerable in times like this--but with the power of people like you, we can ensure that they aren't forgotten nor exploited. Sign the petition.

Shockingly, Republican Lt. Governor Dan Patrick of Texas stated that grandparents (read: seniors in our society) should be willing to sacrifice their safety and lives for the economy of the US. He stated: ‘as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’” Lt. Gov. Patrick stated. “And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in.” Seniors contributed to this society throughout their lives, and continue to do so in multiple, important ways. Many are grandparents contributing to, or raising grandchildren, many are still working in vital roles as medical professionals, engineers, teachers, librarians, drivers, police men and women, professors, chefs, writers, in factories, in restaurants, in pharmacies, as mentors, and many are even politicians (see our present government and those running for office of the President in 2020). Seniors deserve our respect, and when needed, society's protection. They are not dispensable items to be bartered for economic gain for millionaires and billionaires. Seniors in our society are also not what stands in the way of a boost to the US and world economy. The present block to our economic recovery is the Federal government and the Whitehouse taking on the full responsibility to lead our country towards safety, and working in conjunction with state and local governments. The Federal government and Whitehouse leadership missed the opportunity to keep the US population safe by delaying for over a month to prepare IN ADVANCE of COVID-19 reaching the US. Every day in this delay cost hundreds if not thousands of American's their lives and livelihoods: the number of infected individuals multiplies by 5 TIMES EACH DAY according to public health officials (that is, tomorrow the number of infected Americans will be five times more than today, and so on). During that delay, the Federal government and Whitehouse leadership should have: (1) purchased the prepared COVID-19 test kits already available from WHO and made them widely available across all 50 states and US territories; (2) they should have re-created the White House global health unit (disbanded by Trump two years ago: https://time.com/5806558/administration-officials-fight-criticism/); (3) they should have worked with hospitals, medical systems and industry to organize a response and create additional protective materials (masks, gloves, sanitizers, etc.); (4) they should have galvanized the CDC to do more and work more tightly in collaboration with private industry and universities; and importantly, (5) they should have alerted the public to begin to take precautions and how to do so. Suggesting that seniors' lives or any part of our society are dispensable at any time is completely unacceptable. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick must apologize publicly for his comment and make amends. In addition to his public apology, Lt. Gov. Patrick can make amends by promising to donate a significant amount of money (read: many hundreds of thousands of dollars) to help house and feed seniors who are homeless, and volunteer 80 or more hours in homeless shelters housing seniors after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed. After he has spent time with the seniors in these shelters, he should come out with a different opinion, if he has any conscience.

Inmates are in very close quarters, visits are being suspended at all State prisons, inmates have relatively inadequate healthcare, and suppliers, like Walmart, are now refusing to deliver food and care packages to inmates. This greatly reduces the ability of family members to care for their incarcerated loved ones on their own. There is a petition circulating asking the Governor to release the elderly, pregnant women, and those with a compromised immune system. We started this petition because we believe that inmates who are there for simple technical violations should be included. A technical violation is when a parolee does not meet a condition of their parole but also DOES NOT commit a crime. These are things like failing to report for a scheduled visit, missing a curfew, or failure to gain employment. Releasing inmates who are locked up for non-criminal technical violations would help reduce the load on valuable resources New York State needs now to fight this pandemic, to protect the wellbeing of inmates who cannot be released and allow these inmates to return home and care for their family members during this trying time. Ohio was the first to release inmates due to COVID-19 concerns and we know you like to lead the way on innovative solutions to challenging modern problems. Please, Governor Cuomo, release parolees who have been incarcerated for technical violations due to COVID-19 concerns.

No-one can be sure they are safe from this virus. Countless American lives are at stake.

Governor Greg Abbott just ordered a stop to all "surgeries and procedures that are not immediately necessary" in Texas. Abortion is essential healthcare, but the Governor's office is trying to apply the order to abortion clinics. Anti-abortion extremists are exploiting the coronavirus crisis to end abortion access as we know it. We need to raise the alarm right now and flood Abbott's office with petitions demanding that he include abortion as essential healthcare and lift current restrictions that endanger the lives of Texans.
