Charlottesville City Council: Pass a resolution against the War on Drugs! In February, a couple of statements were read to Charlottesville City Council asking them to establish an ordinance that will allow the police to charge citizens found with marijuana to be charged with a minor, local ordinance violation instead of a Virginia criminal charge. The council said they would not be able to establish such an ordinance. Unlike some states, Virginia has a law called the Dillon's Rule, which prevents localities from passing ordinances that intend to work around state law. However, four of the five council members expressed disappointment in Virginia's drug policy and showed some willingness to support a change of that policy. A resolution opposing the War on Drugs will be presented at the April 2nd Charlottesville City Council meeting. It says that the War on Drugs, and specifically marijuana, has not been working. It also declares that marijuana violations should be Charlottesville's "lowest law enforcement priority" and it petitions the Virginia General Assembly and the governor to consider state-wide legislation that supports reforming marijuana laws and penalties. The resolution is constantly evolving, and may be modified by the council. You can read the most recent form of the resolution here. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Charlottesville-Residents-for-the-Decriminalization-of-Marijuana/250207961726090125 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Jordan McNeish

Reduce U.S. Deficit by use of the dollar coinAccording to the Government Accountability Office (GAO), eliminating the dollar bill and transitioning to the dollar coin will save the government at least $5.5 billion over the next 30 years. During this time when all Americans are demanding increased government efficiency, we can’t afford to wait any longer to make this simple, common sense change. Dollar coins last far longer (a lifespan of 7 times that of bills), and are fully recyclable - dollar bills are shredded and go to the landfill. Save money for the country and help the environment - support the dollar coin!9 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Tony Vernon

Repealing Alabama's Immigration LawAs a citizenry, we need to appeal this law. It is bad law since it is being challenged in the national courts. It has affected many lives adversely. Children are being pulled out of schools they feel comfortable in and are learning in. Jobs and employers are feeling the effect because businesses are suffering with jobs they can't fill. And lastly, the economy is taking a hit since the money is not there from citizens who are living in fear. Fear which has caused them to leave their employment. Thus businesses who rely on this money now no longer have this money and find it tougher to be successful. Even American born citizens who leave the house without any identification, are risking being arrested and are subject to deportation if they do not fit the profile of looking American. We need an immigration solution but this is not it. Thank you for your attention4 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Michael F. Paul

Stop the government takeover of K-12 health careSenate Bill 6442, sponsored by Sen. Steve Hobbs, eliminates K-12 school employees’ current health care system and forces everyone into a costly new plan run by the state health care bureaucracy. It will cost Washington taxpayers $45 million in new cost, increase school employees' insurance costs and reduce their health care benefits. It also eliminates employer health care coverage for K-12 employees who work less than half time.3,618 of 4,000 SignaturesCreated by Teri Staudinger

Hands Off Our Healthcare! In the middle of the night on Friday, March 2, the Republicans passed their version of a state budget: a Wisconsin-style attack on public school employees, students and collective bargaining – and educators’ health care benefits. This budget is similar to what Gov. Scott Walker did to educators and public workers in Wisconsin. If anti-union legislators in Washington get their way now, just think what could happen after the general election in November! We, the educators and public education supporters of the State of Washington, urge Senate Democrats and fair-minded Republicans to oppose these attacks on public education, collective bargaining and school employees’ health care benefits.593 of 600 SignaturesCreated by WEA Rainier

Gov. Haley’s latest outrageIn South Carolina, unemployment insurance as we know it is on the chopping block. Over 200,000 South Carolinians are currently unemployed. These are our friends, neighbors and family members who are struggling to find work. But instead of helping create good jobs, right-wing legislators and Gov. Haley have proposed a slew of destructive bills this year—blaming jobless workers and their families for an economic downturn they didn’t create. Their latest stunt? A bill which would require unemployed workers to pass drug tests to get their unemployment insurance, look for only full-time employment opportunities after a certain period and force them to take minimum wage work after a short period of time on unemployment. It's time for South Carolina lawmakers to stop these attacks and focus on real policies that create good jobs for South Carolinians.2,293 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Arthur Green
