  • Fund the Port Authority of Allegheny County
From the Port Authority of Allegheny County website: "2012 Proposed Service Reduction Information Port Authority is facing a $64 million deficit in its operating budget for the coming fiscal year, starting July 1. This deficit stems from a lack of dedicated funding for transportation at the state level." "Left without adequate state funding, Port Authority will have no choice but to slash service, increase fares and lay off employees in order to balance its budget, which it is legally obligated to do." Even though Governor Corbett has stated that he will release a funding plan in February, he has not committed to the funding necessary to maintain the level of service we have today. Please sign this petition to let Governor Corbett and PA state legislators know that you believe the Port Authority of Allegheny County provides a critical service to our community. • Verizon: Enough of the overpriced data fees!
In 2011 Verizon reported earnings that more than tripled as taxes decreased and the carrier attracted new customers after introducing Apple Inc.’s iPhone. Their net income rose to $1.44 billion. Not only is this huge profit increase a result of the iphone's popularity but it is also due to the ridiculously high fees for data plans required to use it as well as other smart phones. People want the service so they pay it as they feel they have no choice. We are calling for people to stand up for their right to have and use a smartphone without having to pay astronomical amounts of money. A single data package fee for all phones on one plan to have unlimited data access is not too much to ask.

  • Do Not Close Bagel Station
Today I have found out that the Attended Bagel Station at our HQ cafeteria will not longer exist, starting Wednesday, January 25. The management has decided to save money by not paying wages to a dedicated employee and forcing us to prepare our own bagels. It is a very disappointing decision, since what Marcia has been doing for years, was more than prepare our bagels. With her we started our day, every morning. That personal touch is something irreplaceable. Please sign this petition to let the cafeteria management know that.

  • Protect Maine's North Woods From Reckless Development
If you've been to Maine's North Woods, you know what's at stake. Generations of Mainers have learned to love the outdoors while exploring Maine's 10 million acres of open space—from the Rangeley Lakes to Moosehead Lake to Mount Katahdin. But Governor Paul LePage is threatening to destroy the North Woods as we know it by letting counties drop out of the Land Use Regulation Commission, which protects the North Woods from reckless development. A committee has already started considering the bill.

  • Support Indiana lawmakers fighting attacks on Hoosier working families
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and his Republican colleagues in the Indiana House and Senate, along with their deep-pocketed corporate allies from out of state, are pushing the biggest attack on Hoosier working families in decades. They want to pass a so-called right-to-work bill. The Republican backers of this bill claim that it would bring new jobs into Indiana. The reality is that in states that have passed right-to-work laws there has actually been a loss in the number of jobs as well as cuts in wages, reduced benefits, and an increase in unsafe working conditions. In short, right-to-work laws have taken away workers’ rights and weakened their collective voice by destroying unions and inhibiting workers’ rights to organize, leaving them virtually defenseless. Fortunately, Democratic members in both houses of the Indiana Legislature are standing up to this attempted political power grab. To stop right-wing legislators from ramming this bill through, Democrats in the House have filibustered sessions over the past week even in the face of $1,000 a day fines from Republicans. Ironically, in 2001 the Republicans staged a boycott over a pending issue and the Democrats didn’t fine them for doing what they (the Republicans) believed was the right thing to do. House and Senate Democrats are also pushing hard for an amendment for a referendum allowing Hoosiers to vote whether or not they want Indiana to become a right-to-work state. Initially, the Republicans said they would go along with this amendment; however, once the Democrats returned to the sessions, the Republicans went back on their word. The Democrats then returned to filibustering the sessions, in spite of the fine. Where I grew up, going back on one’s word is called lying. The question here is why the Republicans are so opposed to a referendum when their party leader, Governor Daniels, has stated: “I do not share the fear of some that Hoosiers cannot be trusted to weigh the pros and cons of big investments for which they will pay the costs. I say, trust the people; give them the facts, and let them vote.” The answer is that 71% of working Hoosiers are opposed to right-to-work laws and if they are given the opportunity to vote on this issue, they would vote against it. The powers that be would not get their way, even though it disagrees with the voters who elected them, whom they are supposed to represent. Please sign the petition to thank Democratic lawmakers and urge them to continue to stand strong.

  • Attorney General Holder: Order a Federal Investigation of the Penn State/Second Mile Sex-abuse Sc...
In spite of the Penn State/Second Mile sex-abuse scandal well within the public eye by now, it's baffling that there is no known federal investigation currently ongoing despite the involvement of local and even state authorities and legislators, as well as hard evidence pointing to trafficking minors across state lines. As its name suggests, this petition calls on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to order a federal investigation into any and all activities tied to the scandal, as well as any and all individuals suspected of participating in those activities.
