Purdue Pharma, which makes OxyContin, is owned by the Sackler family. According to the New York Times, "Since OxyContin came on the market in 1996, more than 200,000 people have died in the United States from overdoses involving prescription opioids, and Purdue Pharma has been the target of numerous lawsuits." Here in Massachusetts, the opioid crisis has hit hard. In 2016 alone there were 1,821 opioid-related overdose deaths in our state. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey recently filed a lawsuit that aims to hold members of the Sackler family personally responsible for deliberately misleading the public about the dangers of OxyContin, but we need to pressure Harvard to completely cut ties as well.

Karen Pence, second lady of the United States, has agreed to teach art at a Christian school in northern Virginia twice a week that does not provide admission to LGBTQ students or parents. She has taught for this school for 12 years and is now returning on a part-time basis. The rules of this school are obviously discriminatory against folks that are LGBTQ, and this is unacceptable.

The Constitution requires that EVERYONE who lives here be counted every 10 years, regardless of whether they are a citizen or not. But the Department of Commerce has announced a plan to add a question about citizenship status to the 2020 Census -- and experts say this would discourage many legitimate responses. This would dramatically skew the results of the Census -- and with them, the resources and political power our communities can access. Recently, a New York District Court found the addition of a citizenship question to the Census in violation of the law. But this decision will likely be appealed -- so it’s up to Congress to stop this partisan scheme for good. We must tell Congress to stop this effort to politicize this vital tool for democracy -- and instead push for a Census in which everyone counts.
