• Washington Post: Fire Fred Hiatt
Washington Post editorialist George Will recently opined that rape victims enjoy "a coveted status that confers privileges". In the face of widespread calls for Will to be fired, Fred Hiatt defended that stance as "within bounds of legitimate debate" and "very healthy and exactly what a good opinion section should be offering its readers". Apparently Mr. Hiatt thinks his newspaper is operating in the Taliban controlled areas of Afghanistan rather than the modern West. As Iraq again explodes into heartbreaking deadly violence, it's important to remember that this same Fred Hiatt oversaw an editorial page that penned 27 columns urging the US to invade that country. His page rarely saw fit to host "healthy debate" on that important decision and savagely mocked Al Gore when he spoke out against the idea. Over 600,000 innocent civilians lost their lives as a result. Hiatt has never apologized. Yet he considers whether or not rape victims are "privileged" to be within the bounds of debate. As Mr. Bezos tries to return the Washington Post to its former glory and credibility using a subscription model, he would do well to stay mindful of the values of its readers. He can start by updating his editorial page to something more fitting with the 21st century and the decency of its readership.

  • Require that all data brokers be accountable and transparent.
These lists such as "White Pages" or "Intellius" contain information which allows criminals to gather personal information. This is a dire and immediate threat to our privacy and safety. Data brokers should provide a means for people to remove or correct their listing. I have had numerous experiences, as many people have, of scam artists getting access to my personal information and attempting to involve us in various criminal actions. Senator Rockefeller created Senate Bill 2025 "Data Broker and Transparency Act" which now sits in committee. The House of Representatives should enact a similar bill, perhaps making it stronger, and requiring that data brokers obtain our permission to list our data. This is, after all, our personal information.

  • Demand action against oil companies raising prices and over charging Americans for gas.
I find it appalling that we as tax payers subsidize an industry that can arbitrarily hike up prices. Either force them to pay taxes industry wide or pay huge fines equal to the amount of money they avoid paying in taxes annually. Lower gas prices and prevent them from raising prices as long as they benefit for tax loop holes and subsidies.

  • No More Bank Racketeering From NationStar Mortgage!
NationStar Mortgage, led by no other than Jay Bray and his Gang of Thieves, has managed to foreclose on many disabled people as well as the elderly, the working poor and minorities of this country. This has got to be stopped. If you are one of these people, andJay and the Gang has gotten your mortgage via Bank of America, please know you are not alone. Jay and his Gang from NationStar Mortgage have started in the last 3 years to place fees that they can not explain on your mortgage. Are you that person that has a fixed mortgage that has had your mortgage payment go up? Are you that person that paid off your mortgage; NationStar has not given you ANY THING to say you have paid such mortgage. Are you that person that has been given the run around when you ask why your mortgage will never be the same payment again due to fees NO ONE in that Company can explain? Are you that person that gets a bill each month that keepsd getting higher with Jay and the Gangs racketeering methods. Jay was part of Bank of America's Prime Lending Department before the Government said, "No more." Jay Bray was rewarded by becoming Chief Executive Officer and Director of --YES you got it -- NationStar, located in Lewisville, Texas. Jay Bray MUST BE STOPPED. NATIONSTAR MUST BE STOPPED! You can check out the damage from this company; just type NationStar Mortgage complaints. Please sign this petition and pass it on. This will be sent to Senator Elizabeth Warren. James of Cornville, AZ on June 5, 2014 With many previous problems with Bank of America in very poor record keeping, misappropriation of funds and NO follow up on my two attempts at Refi. Jan. 2013, our mortgage was transferred to Nationstar. It has been a nightmare since. TERRIBLE record keeping, rude and insulting customer service reps, failure to correct their errors and now threats of foreclosure. An 'F' rating from Dallas BBB two months ago! Since Day 1, I have kept meticulous, DETAILED records, talked to more than 40 people with no resolution! Errors ruined our Credit ratings. This treatment made both me and my wife VERY ill, including hospitalizations. I have discussed, mailed, faxed my complete records dozens of times. I wrote to Mr. Bray, CEO, with complaints and records. Not even the courtesy of a reply from his office, and no corrections. I filed complaints with CFPB, Attorneys General in AZ and TX, Texas BBB, Senator Warren and now the DOJ. I have had two past heart attacks and NOT likely to survive a third. Wife spent 8 days in Acute Neurological Center for severe seizures caused all this stress. If they do steal our home, we stand to lose $40,000 in down payment and buy-down - ALL our lifetime savings. I am going to TV Investigators to take this public. There is doubt my life has been shortened as a result of this unnecessary stress. I am now 70 years old and this has taken a huge toll on our health. I have done EVERYTHING conceivable to clear up their mess, but they are so intractable, rude and disorganized in correcting their errors!! There are too many people like my friend that this is happening too.

  • PBS Presisdent Paula Kerger: Create a Koch-Free PBS
David Koch's millions are increasingly clogging our electoral system and distorting public perceptions about climate change, but we can turn his money against him. For years, David Koch has used his position on the board of PBS's biggest producer, Boston's WGBH, to cast himself as a friend of science and education. With national attention focused on Koch's role in the election, we can expose his true intentions and preserve the independence of our most treasured public service.

  • Waffle House: Give Employees Their Tips
North Carolina Waffle House server Shaina Brown was given a $1,000 credit card tip by a generous customer. But Waffle House did not let her keep the tip. (Charlotte Observer, 6/9/14) In this case, the generous customer heard the news and sent a check to Brown. But across the country, not only are servers paid as little as $2.13 an hour, they are also frequent victims of wage theft.

  • Augusta: Defend ME Clean Energy Jobs
Koch Bro's dream of dismantling renewable energy in Maine just got real!! Their think tank, the Maine Heritage Policy Center, attacked Maine's membership in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative - a clean energy program that has created hundreds of green jobs, reduced the impact of climate change in Maine, and contributed $51 million to the Efficiency Maine Trust. Maine Senator Diane Russell calls the RGGI "a highly successful, regional cap-and-trade program that has contributed more than $92 million to the state’s economy and more than 900 new jobs between 2009 and 2011." (BDN 6/7/2014) If Maine legislators declare that they'll defend clean energy in Maine and won't bend to the Koch's demands, we can keep Maine's energy economy clean and politics clean of the Koch's money and influence.

  • Support Striking Workers at Walmart's Annual Shareholder Meeting
Today, thousands of Walmart workers are striking at the company's annual shareholder meeting in Bentonville, Arkansas to take a stand for fair wages and just working conditions. We’re joining them by releasing a new brief that shows that Walmart could give Walmart workers substantial raises by simply ending their unproductive practice of stock buybacks. These buybacks amounted to $6.6 billion in 2013, and are a result of Walmart’s focus on short-term results over long-term value. The numbers are striking. For what shareholders spent on stock repurchases in 2013, they could opt instead to give all of Walmart's low-wage workers a $5 an hour raise. For what the company spent in dividend payments to the three heirs of the Walton family alone in 2013, they could give their 825,000 low-wage workers a $2 an hour raise. Sign our petition to support striking workers today, and tell Walmart that a higher wage is possible, and necessary. Thomas Piketty's bestselling Capital in the 21st Century places the onus of escalating wealth inequality on the growth of capital rather than labor. This year, Walmart can help break that vicious cycle by providing a productive boost to workers and its own bottom line through human capital investments that generate real returns.

  • Sign the petition: Stand with Vermont as they face Monsanto over food labeling
Vermont is the first state in the nation to pass a law requiring all Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in food to be labeled for consumers. Now, Monsanto and other corporations in the the food industry are planning to launch a lawsuit against the state claiming this law violates their right to free speech, by forcing disclosure of GMOs. Consumers want to know what’s in their food. Food producers don’t want to disclose that information. Vermont is taking on a very powerful enemy to defend the rights of consumers against corporations, and this could set a very important legal precedent. Sign the petition: We deserve to know what's in our food. Stand with Vermont, as they face a lawsuit from Monsanto and Big Ag, for being the first state in the nation to require GMO labeling.
