• Sign Our Letter to Vice President Biden: We Have Some Plans for That
Inclusion We first urge you to approach the problems that face our country using an intersectional equity lens. Challenges compounded by race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and ability are present at every level from health care to housing to climate change to education. Addressing these needs must be at the center, not the sidelines, of our government’s policy goals. We also point to Senator Warren’s—and Secretary Castro’s—practice of bringing activists with direct knowledge of and experience with these needs to the table. We ask that you not only follow that example and use these on-the-ground experts to help shape your policies, but also that you appoint them to key roles in your administration. Personnel is policy. Corruption Senator Warren framed her campaign around dismantling the corrupt channels that perpetuate structural inequity and prevent any meaningful reform. Your plan to establish the Commission on Federal Ethics aligns with Senator Warren’s proposed U.S. Office of Public Integrity, which would oversee efforts to restore transparency to our government. We ask that you go further: support a ban on professional lobbying by any former president, vice president, cabinet secretary, federal judge, or member of Congress. We ask also that you make passage of a constitutional amendment to limit campaign contributions—nullifying Citizens United—a top priority. We must have trust in our government, and that begins with ensuring our officials and elections cannot be bought. Immigration We applaud your commitment to a moratorium on deportations during your first 100 days as president, but further action is needed to eliminate the cruelty and abuse perpetrated in the name of immigration enforcement. We need comprehensive reform of our immigration justice system, and we must start with decriminalizing immigration. To prevent future abuses, we urge you to commit to the establishment of professional, independent Article I immigration courts, and to provide access to counsel in all immigration courts. You have condemned the horrific actions of the Trump administration at the border. We urge you to adopt Senator Warren’s plan for a Department of Justice task force to investigate and prosecute all reported crimes committed against detained immigrants. Student Loan Debt The rising cost of tuition across the country means that many students are crushed by student loan debt—and it’s impacting our entire economy. Black students are particularly affected: they are more likely to have federal student loans and owe more than their original debt 12 years after finishing college. We are supportive of public service, but strongly believe that across-the-board college loan debt reduction is the best approach, especially for those with increased barriers (poor and working-class students, students with family obligations, and working students). We ask you to adopt Senator Warren's approach and cancel student loan debt through executive action, immediately enabling 95% of student loan debt holders to pursue their dreams. Universal Child Care Universal child care is an investment in working parents. It provides millions of children with access to quality care and early learning. It also creates millions of well-paying jobs for child care workers and early education teachers, many of whom are women of color. Research shows that every dollar spent on quality early education saves seven dollars in the long run. We encourage you to adopt Senator Warren’s plan, which mandates that universal child care be free to any family that earns less than 200% of the federal poverty line. Crucially, the plan also establishes a partnership between the federal government and local providers to offer a network of early childhood options—including child care and preschool centers—to every family. Equality for Americans with Disabilities You have a strong history advocating for Americans with disabilities through your work on the ADA, the ADAAA, IDEA, and VAWA. It is critical that you collaborate with disability rights leaders and advocates moving forward to form a comprehensive disability rights plan. We ask that you use Senator Warren’s plan for Protecting the Rights and Equality of Americans With Disabilities as a model. This includes our ask that you to commit to combating discrimination in the labor market and workplace, ending the subminimum wage, fully funding the Office of Disability Employment Policy, improving SSI and SSDI programs, breaking down barriers to marriage, providing national paid family and medical leave, improving critical elements of the long-term services, and supporting coverage to enable the right to live in the community. We also urge you to protect the civil rights of all Americans with disabilities, including decriminalizing poverty, addressing language deprivation for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and enforcing the ADA everywhere that it is applicable. We urge you to work with the disability rights community to incorporate key priorities relating to employment, housing, opioid medications, disaster preparedness, healthcare, education, equity in criminal justice, deinstitutionalization, and other key civil rights issues into your platform. Wealth Tax These plans have a price tag. We believe in fiscal responsibility—every American should pay their fair share. We believe ultra-millionaires, who benefit most from our country’s infrastructure, should invest a little more in our country. Therefore, we ask you to adopt Senator Warren’s two cent wealth tax, which requires those Americans lucky enough to have vast fortunes to pay a two cent tax on every dollar of net worth above $50 million. Over 10 years, this tax will raise an estimated $3.75 trillion that we can reinvest in working families by supporting education, childcare, family leave, and more. --- We invite you to join us in signing this letter to Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden.

  • Travel for Young Musicians in NWA
In 2019, the Bentonville School Board revised the Off-Campus Education/Student Travel policy to minimize absences and limit travel expenses. The policy now limits travel every year to a 300-mile radius, only allowing students to travel outside of this radius every other year unless they have a state-level ranking. The problem is: There is no state-level ranking system in Arkansas for Orchestra (as is common in other student activities) and there are no national orchestra competitions within this 300-mile radius that are adequate for the level of skill in the BHS Orchestras. Competitions and conventions such as ASTA (American String Teachers Association) provide high-value classes and experiences to students and teachers. It is extremely important that BHS Orchestras are able to travel every year in order to access opportunities like this! However, under the current policy, Orchestra is only able to travel every other year. We propose amending the board policy to include the following statement: "If no state-level competition is available, students may travel outside this radius once per year.” This will give equal opportunities to all departments, including Orchestra.

  • Bring back Drivers' Education to Tennessee public schools
Help students, parents, educators, and concerned citizens across Tennessee bring back Drivers’ Education to public schools. Many families cannot afford to send their children to a private driver’s education class. As a result, it’s creating a barrier to obtaining a driver’s license, students who are passing the tests are still afraid to drive, and compounding this issue is the fact that rampant “texting and driving” continues to be a source of danger on our roadways. Teen-aged drivers, now more than ever, are in need of driver education and greater awareness of the importance of safe driving habits. In large cities and rural areas across Tennessee, there are young people who are involved in wrecks because of their lack of driving experience. The impact is higher insurance premiums for the public and more car accidents due to unskilled and inexperienced drivers. Accidents remain a leading cause of death for young adults in the state of Tennessee. Moreover, in 31 states there is a mandate for driver education before a driver license is even issued. This is public safety! Please sign this petition in support of TN House Bill 2443 & TN Senate Bill 2446 and pass on to 10 friends.

  • Catholic University Parking Permit
Catholic University has been raising the price of tuition every single year and charges thousands for room and board. This forces people to move off campus and bring their vehicles from home. A parking ticket can vary, but it is about $60. A parking permit for a semester is hundreds of dollars on top of the tens of thousands students and their family’s pay to attend the university. It is important that they lower prices and understand that they are outrageously priced.

  • Community Concerns Around MGRS District Hiring for Senior Administration: Principal Positions
There are reasons to be concerned that a pattern has been established under which the District fails to seek and, thus, generate a pool of qualified candidates for senior administrative positions. In this vein, the last search for a Superintendent included a posting of the position which cited the existence of a "strong internal candidate". This resulted in a near-total absence of qualified outside candidates despite the attraction of a new, state-of-the-art high school building. Additionally, no apparent effort was made to attract a *licensed* principal to fill the recently (and twice-) vacated position at Lanesborough Elementary School. The core values outlined for the District state: "We recognize the responsibility of the entire school community to ensure the success of all students.” The argument for utilizing a transparent and inclusive process to fill such key positions is strengthened by the documented extraordinary turnover in non-union staff experienced within the District since Ms. Grady became Assistant Superintendent in June of 2016. At least 20 positions have been vacated including: - Superintendent (District/Central Office) - Business Manager (District/Central Office) - Administrative Assistant to Superintendent/HR (District/Central Office) - Administrative Assistant/HR Specialist (District/Central Office) - Custodial Supervisor at Lanesborough Elementary - Office Assistant (District/Central Office) - Treasurer (District/Central Office) - Bookkeeper/Business Assistant (District/Central Office) - Compliance Monitoring Assistant/Pupil Services Coordinator ("Team Leader") (District) - Director of Pupil Services (District) - Interim Director of Pupil Services (District) - Maintenance/Facilities Director (District) - Cafeteria Supervisor Mount Greylock - Cafeteria Director Mount Greylock - Administrative Assistant to Director of Pupil Personnel Williamstown Elementary School - Principal Lanesborough Elementary School - Administrative Assistant Lanesborough Elementary School - Principal Lanesborough Elementary School - Principal Mt. • Recess is BACK! Support Georgia Bill #843 30 Minutes of Recess Daily for Grades K-5
This petition is to support of Georgia House Bill 843 sponsored by Representative Demetrius Douglas outlining a plan to provide 30 minutes of recess to Georgia elementary school children. Currently Georgia does not have a formal requirement to provide recess to grades K-5. In March 2019 during the Georgia legislative session, a similar House Bill (#83) was approved by both the Senate and House (237 in "yay", only 15 "nay", so 96% in favor). In May 2019, Governor Kemp vetoed the bill preferring local control of recess policies. Representative Douglas is rightly passionate about this issue and is bringing recess back for consideration in 2020. Given the overwhelmingly positive response of both the House and Senate in 2019, we want to show our support as a community through this petition. Currently Georgia ranks #8 in childhood obesity. More and more children are being diagnosed with health related illnesses. Children need unstructured play time, fresh air and sunlight incorporated into their school day. House Bill 843 provides for 30 minutes of recess for all Georgia children consistently. It gives children the right to play, supporting healthy development -- physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and academically. Thank you for your support!

  • Fully Fund MNPS and Increase Teacher Pay and Retention
The current pay schedule is not competitive with the current job market in and outside of the education field. Furthermore, it does not account for the cost of living in the metropolitan Nashville area. As a result, our children are losing talented teachers to other counties and other industries. Also, without enough substitute teachers and support staff, educators bear an unfair and heavy workload that ultimately creates an unhealthy education experience for both children and teachers alike. The injustice our children experience when high-quality teachers are lost due to a system that underpays and undervalues them is unconscionable.

  • Lewiston School Committee: Declare a Climate Emergency!
In October and November of 2019, Maine’s first and fourth largest cities made history. Portland and South Portland became the first places in Maine to declare a climate emergency. Brunswick and Bar Harbor declared an emergency shortly after, with more on the way or in the process. A similar resolution has now been presented to the Lewiston School Committee. It is only fitting that a school, a place where children learn about the world, listen to the youth activists. Climate change is often seen as a scary and abstract concept. How would understanding around the crisis change if students’ schools recognized it for the emergency it is? How many more environmental leaders would we have growing up today? This is why we urge Lewiston Public Schools to declare climate emergency.
