• Tell Mifflin County (PA) Commissioner to resign for bigoted posts
Mifflin County Commissioner Lisa Nancollas (Republican) was caught posting bigoted Facebook posts on her campaign site. She has since taken them down, but they are available on news sites, including her hometown paper (http://lewistownsentinel.com/page/content.detail/id/588669/Facebook-post-stirs-controversy.html?nav=5010). She still has anti-Islam posts on her personal Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/mifflincountyteaparty?ref=br_rs). The first post was a meme — an image, often with text, meant to be spread widely through the internet — of a mosque with a red “no” symbol covering it. It also said “No Islam Allowed.” The commissioner followed the post with a message for anyone following her page. “If you don’t like what I post on my wall then don’t look at my wall,” the second post said. “Also, I believe in the Christian God. I don’t believe in Islam, sharia law nor do I believe in Allah.” She said people “are only allowed in the kingdom of God if they accept God as their savior not Allah,” in a third post. She has since deleted the meme but has continued posting about Islam.

  • Stop this attack on early voting in North Carolina
Incredible! Republican leaders who complain about "rigged elections" are trying to do exactly that in North Carolina by making it harder for African Americans and students to use early voting. Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, sent instructions to Republicans who hold the majority on all 100 county boards of elections to "make party line changes to early voting." He specifically told them to close early voting sites on Sunday, remove them from college campuses, and open more in Republican areas, according to his emails obtained by the Raleigh News & Observer. More than half of N.C.’s voters used early voting in 2008 and 2012; it was even more heavily used by African Americans and young voters. Closing sites and reducing hours will mean longer lines and discouraged voters on Election Day. Fortunately, many Republican members on county election boards are ignoring Woodhouse and obeying their oath to serve all voters. But in Raleigh, Fayetteville, Wilmington, and many other areas, they are opposing Sunday voting where it was used in the March primary. The reduced early voting plans of these counties will come before the State Board of Elections on September 8. The State Board has the power to restore them and repudiate the deliberate anti-black, anti-youth strategy of Republican Party leaders. Sign the petition to ask Mr. Grant Whitney Jr., board chair, and other board members to restore early voting on Sunday afternoons and on campuses that were recently eliminated or opposed by Republican county election boards. Last month, the federal Court of Appeals overturned a state law it said would suppress voting; we can't let local officials do the same thing with weak or discriminatory early voting plans for November.

  • Tell Mayor Lenny Curry to disavow Donald Trump and his racist attacks
Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign by calling Mexican immigrants "murderers" and "rapist," and has since deployed similar attacks targeting women, Muslims, and most recently veterans and their families. Donald Trump has only intensified his vile attacks on minorities and people of color. Trump has insulted the parents of a fallen military veteran on national television and stated that a federal judge could not be unbiased because of his “Mexican heritage.” With full knowledge about Trump's racist comments and policies, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has chosen to support Trump - despite promising his constituents that he would govern in a non-partisan way. Lenny Curry was elected serve and protect the residents of Jacksonville, not to further his political career by supporting a racist like Donald Trump. It is unacceptable for Lenny Curry to put his political ambitions ahead of the residents of Jacksonville, especially at the expense of supporting one of the most extreme and dangerous presidential candidates in recent history. Lenny Curry needs to put people befor politics and revokes his support for Donald Trump!

  • Congressional Retirement / Age limitations
According to the Congressional Research Service, as of Oct. 1, 2013: Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at the age of 62 if they have completed at least five years of service. Members are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service. The amount of the pension depends on years of service and the average of the highest three years of salary. By law, the starting amount of a Member’s retirement annuity may not exceed 80% of his or her final salary. Though this is a leadership role, it is no more and no less significant than the years of contractual service of our service members. As seen above, dependent upon age, you may draw a pension from the federal as short as only serving for five years. Furthermore, there is no federally mandated retirement age for congressional members. Proposed: All congressional elected members should be held to the same standard of retirement as U.S. service members. Upon completion of 20 years of elected service, said individuals may receive a pension not to exceed 50% of their former wages. Upon completion of 30 years of elected service, said individuals may receive a pension not to exceed 75% of their former wages. Should the member serve so much as one (1) day less than a full 20-year term, no pension will be afforded them. Under -10 USC 1251 Statutory Retirement for Active Duty Officers due to age. Age 62, on the 1st day of the month after birthday month. May be waived to age 68 for Chaplains and Health Care Professionals performing patient care or clinical duties (doctors, nurses, dentists). There is no competent reason that Elected individuals should exceed this standard. Reference: -10 USC 6323, OPNAVINST 1811.3A Voluntary Retirement for Active Duty Officers (20 years) 20 years and 1 day of Active Duty Service -10 USC 6322, OPNAVINST 1811.3A Voluntary Retirement for Active Duty Officers (30 years) 30 years and 1 day of Active Duty Service

  • Mayor Gimenez: Don't deny Miami-Dade voters the right to free and fair elections
Last week, New Florida Majority and its partners turned in over 127,000 petitions in Miami-Dade County calling for an initiative on the ballot this November to reduce the power of big-money interests and give ordinary people a stronger voice in our elections. While this fight is local, its success could strengthen the movement to get big money out of politics across the country. Wealthy special interests have too big a say in who gets to run for office and what laws get passed. Political donations have a large amount of influence over the political process, and the vibrant diversity of communities around the country, such as Miami-Dade County, isn't represented in the donor class. For example, Black people make up one-fifth of Miami-Dade County's population, but only two percent of donors to mayoral candidates. The donor pool for county commission candidates includes more Black donors but is still not representative. The ballot initiative in Miami-Dade, which successfully gained 127,000 petition signatures, would encourage a more diverse donor pool and empower the county's Black population, and it could pave the way for similar legislation around the country. The initiative would lower contribution limits, prohibit contributions from big county contractors and their lobbyists, and strengthen enforcement and update the county's public financing program to replace the large donations from wealthy special interests with small donations from ordinary people. The people of Miami-Dade have spoken, and they want this initiative on the November ballot. Will you stand with them and make sure their voices are heard? All the rules regarding petition circulation and delivery were followed in Miami-Dade, and now it is time for the Elections Department to fulfill its duty to count and verify the petitions in time for the 2016 election. Mayor Carlos Gimenez and the county commissioners cannot ignore the voices of 127,000 people and deny the right to free and fair elections to Miami-Dade's residents.

  • Tell Trump to release his tax returns now.
During the presidential campaign, Donald Trump became the first major nominee to refuse to release his tax returns in 40 years. If Trump thought he could dodge releasing his tax returns forever, he was wrong, and we’re going to prove that. We won’t stop until we get the full transparency we deserve from the highest office in the land. He works for us now, after all. That’s why thousands of Americans are marching on April 15th in Washington, D.C. with taxmarch.org

  • Put Pentagon Bloat on the Table to Pay for Domestic Infrastructure
The Washington Post claims that Hillary Clinton won't be able to fulfill her promise to increase domestic infrastructure spending, because House Republicans will insist on cuts elsewhere to pay for it. [1] But that would only be the end of the story if we assumed - as the Washington Post apparently does - that the bloated Pentagon budget is sacrosanct. Not every House Republican votes in lock-step with the Pentagon. Forty House Republicans - many of them members of the House Liberty Caucus - voted with the overwhelming majority of House Democrats to stop the transfer of cluster bombs to Saudi Arabia. [2] Urge Democrats and Republicans in Washington to put cuts to the bloated Pentagon budget on the table to pay for domestic infrastructure spending by signing our petition. • .@RodneyDavis: Publicly Oppose Lame Duck TPP Vote
President Obama is still pushing for a vote on the corporate power-grabbing Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement in a "lame duck" session of Congress after the election. If Obama gets his way, the presidential election wouldn't count - the TPP would be approved before the next president takes office. As Michigan Rep. John Conyers recently wrote in The Hill, "even those lawmakers and officials who support the deal should recognize that lame duck consideration of such a highly controversial deal would create a crisis of legitimacy in American politics." [1] Six House Republicans who like Rodney Davis voted for "Fast Track" authority to negotiate the TPP last year recently urged President Obama not to push for a lame duck vote on the TPP. They wrote: "A 'lame duck' Congress should not vote on an agreement of this consequence – it would be an end-run around the American people immediately following an election." [2] Urge Rodney Davis to join these House Republicans in publicly opposing a lame duck vote on the TPP by signing our petition.
