The New York SAFE Act is a draconian gun control package that was passed without public debate or input. It infringes the Constitutionally protected rights of law-abiding citizens, interferes with commerce, deprives people of their right to use and transfer personal property, and creates unfunded mandates on taxpayers--all without preventing violent crimes or reducing their severity. The Putnam County Legislature rightly enacted a resolution opposing the NY SAFE Act, which resolution we now support with this petition.

I lost two friends to gun violence. I want stricter gun laws. Today some 30 Americans are likely to die from firearms, including 17 children and youth under age 24. Since 1980 over 1 million Americans have lost their lives to gun violence. It's past time to fix our broken gun laws.

A good example of how insidious the NRA actions have been, may be best demonstrated by the TIHART amendment. As a result of the TIHART amendment, the American people are not privy to the information available in the ATF's [alcohol, tobacco and firearms agency] records. As a result, the American people cannot become aware of the data that clearly shows that the NRA is hiding the real facts so that the firearms industry and their lobbyists can prosper. It is NOT most of the NRA members, but an influential few that are killing Americans to pad their own pockets. We are ALL affected by this issue.
