  • You can buy soda with food stamps but not toothpaste and brush
A man on food stamps with a toothache pointed out a terrible irony: He can buy soda with food stamps, but not a toothbrush and tooth paste! We all agree: Health care costs are too high, the deficit is too big, taxes are too high, government should cut wasteful spending. Here's an idea: "Think Small." If Congress makes one simple change, it could greatly improve the health of many Americans. It's this: Congress, STOP ALLOWING food stamps to be used for soda; DO ALLOW food stamps to be used for toothpaste and toothbrushes. Soda is not even a food; it is the opposite of nutritious and has been linked to 10 diseases: 1. Extra pounds/obesity* 2. Liver damage/ increased risk for liver cirrhosis 3. Tooth decay (liquid sugar is even worse for teeth than candy) 4. Kidney stones and chronic kidney disease 5. Diabetes 6. Heartburn and acid reflux 7. Soft Bones = osteoporosis 8. Hypertension (high blood pressure) It doesn't matter if the soda is regular or diet. 9. Heart disease/metabolic syndrome 10. Impaired digestion (GI distress) *Note: Artificial sweeteners in diet soda also induce physiologic and hormonal responses causing weight gain. Diet soda is no more a "food" than regular soda.

  • COBRA Premium Reduction
General Information: If you or a family member has lost employment, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) may make it possible for you to keep your employment-related health coverage....This expired when President Obama signed the new Health Care Legislation. My question is why is this not necessary anymore when unemployment continues to be high. This leaves the unemployed without a safety net since the government was paying 65% of the COBRA premium. COBRA premiums can be $500+ for a single person and in the thousands for a family that is unemployed. How did this happen? We keep talking about helping the unemployed and how Americans all need health care but the people who are unemployed through no fault of theirs find that health insurance is out of reach. We continue to assist countries overseas sending them billions but the American taxpayer is left behind. Sad...

  • Just Don't Do It
Rhode Island has the highest suicide attempt rate in the Nation. Please sign a petition to get suicide prevention in schools. Suicide is the #3 killer among teens. The deadline for this petition is Nov. 18th, 2012, the date of the 14th Annual International Survivor of Survivors day. www.justdontdoit.us. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of the organization Just Don't Do It, education and advocating for suicide prevention.

  • Medicare For All Americans
Healthcare is a human right! Help bring an end to this suffering and bring healthcare to every American. We are wasting our health care dollars on insurance company profits. The United States is the only industrialized nation that does not offer universal health care for it's citizens.

  • Reproductive Health for All
Many agree that it is a human right for everyone to receive health care. Unfortunately, one branch of health care, reproductive health, has been put off. Many couples, especially from developing nations, are unable to afford family planning services offered in their countries; certain nations don’t even have a stable family planning program for their people. These predicaments violate one’s right to care for his or her well being. The limitation of such services also negatively affects one’s ability to care for his or her children. If we can make family planning services and contraceptives more affordable and available for the people who need them the most, then there will be more families whose parents can afford to help their children succeed, as well as more women given rights to care for themselves. We are asking Bayer Pharmaceuticals to donate contraceptives to organizations that will help make all of this happen.

  • Make CA Doctors Check Patient Prescription History
Prescription drug addicts in California can currently visit multiple doctors and obtain multiple prescriptions for their opiates of choice without anyone noticing the crime. The Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES) is a prescription monitoring program that keeps track of and reports fraudulent and suspicious prescription cases. However, due to its optional enrollment only 4% of California doctors and pharmacists use it. We need 100% participation to effectively combat prescription drug abuse in our state.
