Our community deserves and demands full accountability from our elected representatives. Mr. Shabazz's comments were unethical and inflammatory and could lead to the direct harm of a law-abiding citizen. His remarks also send the wrong message to our youth and do nothing to assuage the community's pain over the shooting.

The shooting deaths of unarmed Mike Brown, Timothy Russell, Malissa Williams and John Crawford are examples of the inequities that are happening across the country and here in the State of Ohio. This petition is essential because unarmed people of color have been gunned down at the hands of law enforcement without recourse. The Cleveland Renaissance Movement was conceived by local poet and community activist Basheer Jones in reaction to the shooting of Mike Brown, in addition to the police chase and shooting deaths of unarmed Malissa Williams and Timothy Russell. The Cleveland Renaissance Movement (CRM) seeks to ensure and enforce the protection of human rights for all people of color.

We are starting this petition because we wait for an appeal which we have not heard from the lawyer as of yet. In the meantime he has been transferred 5 times, it not allowed to make phone calls. His mother has become sick and only remembers what happened to her son and only talks about the situation. He should be innocent until proven guilty. He needs to be heard on the stand and defend himself. How can our country allow people to be sent to jail innocently!!!!

I am an an addicted alcoholic who has spent over a year in jail for drunk driving, after I realized I had to stop drinking I picked up a very bad Meth smoking habit, because the issues that needed to be addressed about my addiction wasn't addressed until I could no longer smoke enough speed to get high, I was a Lucky one who didn't get arrested in my Speed addiction, and I was a lucky one who didn't kill myself. I was drugged and raped in 2010, and called and waited and called and waited for my rape kit to be tested for 2.5 years. I was told my rape kit would be processed within 14 days. This is unacceptable. SFPD needs to process all of their thousands of backlogged rape kits. It is a hazard to public safety as these criminals continue to freely roam our city streets, potential raping other victims. Furthermore, I was very disrespected and degraded by the SFPD in how they treated me from the moment of my rape up until now.

Michael Boggs—who as a Georgia legislator was anti-choice, anti-gay and anti-civil rights—is in danger of being given a lifetime judicial appointment to the federal bench, because President Obama cut a deal with Georgia’s two Republican senators. A wide coalition of advocates (from NARAL to the NAACP) have organized against Michael Boggs’ confirmation, and many Democrats on Capitol Hill—including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Georgia Congressman John Lewis—have said they will oppose him. But Senator Sheldon Whitehouse—a Rhode Island Democrat—now says that he will vote to confirm Boggs, simply because Georgia’s two Republican senators support him. Even though as a Senate candidate in 2006, Whitehouse said that a nominee’s position on choice alone was enough to filibuster their appointment to the court. We cannot afford to give more federal lifetime appointments to right-wing judges, and Sheldon Whitehouse should know better. I’ve been so impressed by the student sexual assault advocates who’ve bravely testified at the Capitol, and shared their stories with the press. I hope you’ll stand up and join the effort asking Governor Jerry Brown to sign SB 967 into law. As the Father of a college-age daughter, I was stunned to learn that 1 out of 5 women are sexually assaulted during their time in college. This is unacceptable. It is every student’s dream to go to college. It is our duty to provide a safe environment once they get there.
