Congress: Stop Criminalizing the InternetOn January 11, 2013, facing decades in prison on trumped up charges, my partner, Aaron Swartz, made the tragic choice to take his own life. He was only 26. Aaron's supposed crime? He was accused of checking out too many articles (4.8 million), too fast, from an online academic library called JTSOR, to which he had authorized access. He never used or distributed the articles and later returned them. For that, he faced 35 years behind bars and endured two years of relentless persecution. The outdated Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) made this tragedy possible by giving absurdly broad powers to corporations and prosecutors to criminalize an array of online activity. That includes breaching a website's terms of service--that long fine print you "agree to" but never read. All of us who knew and loved Aaron never want to see anyone suffer this kind of abuse of power again. So, we're urgently calling on Congress to reform the CFAA. Aaron was an innovator, entrepreneur, and social justice advocate who co-authored RSS 1.0 (the web's format for sharing and distributing content) at the age of 14, co-founded the social news website Reddit, and led the fight to stop SOPA and PIPA--the internet censorship bills. His fight to stop SOPA and PIPA started with a petition just like this one, so we know this can work. In fact, there's already been a strong, bipartisan reaction to Aaron's death and legislation is in the works to reform the CFAA right now. But it won't happen without a big public push. We can't get Aaron back, but can you help us honor his memory by signing this petition and sharing it with everyone you know? Thank you for listening. --Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman15,938 of 20,000 SignaturesCreated by Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman

Siskiyou County Law Enforcement InvestigationI was incarcerated in Siskiyou County when Sargent Stewart believed drug dealers. He did NO investigation, did NOT knock on the door and ask for any witnesses. It took 56 days for my legal counsel to prepare for a jury trial and present to the D.A. 'trial ready discovery'. Two and one half hours later, void of any court proceedings, I was kicked to the curb. That discovery vaporized $500,000.00 bond WITHOUT a hearing and no one even said "oops, sorry." This is ONE of THREE criminal dismissals by yours truly.3 of 100 SignaturesCreated by paul miller

Legal corruption and lack of redress in FloridaFlorida citizens have been attacked by corruption. There is no agency in the Florida government to help the public citizen. Much of this corruption is white collar crime and is not acted upon to protect the public citizen. We need an agency that will address all crime including white collar crime. This agency must be willing to assist the public citizen to address this crime legally providing punitive damages to the citizen15 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Rebecca Potter

Abolish Maryland's Death PenaltySince 1865, 83.5% of the people executed in Maryland have been black. In 2013, blacks make up 80% of Maryland's death row population, 77% of Maryland's prison and jail population, and 76.1% of the state's prisoners with life sentences. In 2011, I personally witnessed the execution in Georgia of an innocent black man. The man's name was Troy Anthony Davis. Similar mistakes happened in Maryland and will happen again unless we abolish Maryland's death penalty. Let's do so before April 8, 2013, when Maryland's legislative session ends.198 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Thomas Ruffin, Jr., Legal Counsel of Maryland Coalition for Justice & Progressive Change

Support the Position of Obama on gun controlIf you love your country, think about the people who are being killed with guns. Gun and firearm control is good for the people and the country. Those who manufacture firearms can do some other business to survive.1 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Martha Teklu
