The Democrats need to do better. A lot better. We're only on day 7 of Trump's administration and he's already taken sweeping action to restrict abortion, attack immigrants, start his plans to ban Muslims, and even silence federal agencies. And how have Democrats responded? By letting Trump's cabinet sail through. Fifteen Senate Democrats voted for Trump's pro-torture CIA pick, Mike Pompeo. And yesterday, two true progressive champions voted in favor of Ben Carson--who has no relevant experience--to run the federal housing agency. This is unacceptable. And it's simply not going to be good enough to protect us from very real threats in the next four years. We as citizens are doing our part. We're marching and protesting in unprecedented numbers. We're calling our congress members. We're speaking out. Why won't the Democrats fight as hard as us? Now--with just days to go before Trump names his nominee for the Supreme Court--is the time to send a clear message: Democrats, we need you to fight harder, starting now. Will you sign the petition?80 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Nita and Shaunna

Save traditional public school in New OrleansThere are five remaining traditional public schools in New Orleans. All five of the remaining traditional public schools are high-achieving schools, with veteran teachers and principals. Several are open admissions schools and serve a diverse student body. The Orleans Parish School Board plans to convert these schools to charter schools for no reason other than to finalize the vision of education reformers. Chartering the five remaining traditional public schools will further erode and destroy one of the first truly democratic institutions in our nation: the public school. Charter management organizations will gain control over millions of dollars with little to no direct accountability and oversight by the public. Children and parents stand to lose access to their schools as new charter management organizations have full authority to impose admissions and selection criteria. Teachers and administrators are disposable as well. OPSB has not given a rationale for converting these successful schools to charters other than it is within their purview to do so. In unveiling this plan a week before winter break, they have limited public access and skirted public meetings laws. Please join us in raising your voice to save the remaining five public schools in New Orleans. It is hypocritical for education reformers to celebrate choice by eliminating choice for families and making charter schools the ONLY choice for public education in New Orleans. This move by Orleans Parish School Board and education reformers in New Orleans, to charter all the schools, aligns with the vision and stated commitments of Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Education, Betty DeVos, an enemy of public education. Please help us fight for public education in New Orleans and across the state of Louisiana. NO MORE CHARTERS! SAVE TRADITIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS! SAY NO TO BETTY DEVOS-STYLE EDUCATION! SAY NO TO PRIVATIZING PUBLIC EDUCATION!156 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Coalition of Community Schools-New Orleans

Tell Congress: #ProtectOurDemocracy and investigate Russian hackingOn Friday, January 6, the U.S. intelligence community issued a report that Russian intelligence agencies interfered in the 2016 election. This should send a chill down the spines of all Americans -- Democrat, Republican, or Independent. It demands an an independent bipartisan inquiry. Led by Representatives Eric Swalwell and Elijah Cummings, and supported by every single House Democrat, H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, would establish an independent, bipartisan-appointed commission to investigate what happened and how we can secure future elections. The commission would: *get to the bottom of Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections so that Americans understand what really happened; *ensure a depoliticized, comprehensive investigation; and, *work to ensure that this never happens again. Foreign intervention in free and fair elections is unacceptable and a serious threat to our nation. Investigating what happened is an essential effort to safeguard our democracy and restore voter confidence ahead of the 2018 and 2020 elections – but we need your help to ensure every Member of Congress supports this solution to address Russian hacking.2,606 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Shawn VanDiver

¡Únete a Leah y firma el Compromiso de Unidad hoy!45 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Leah

Opt out of outsourcing at University of Memphis, Southwest Community College, and UT Health Scien...Campus workers in Tennessee are under attack. Governor Bill Haslam's Administration has quietly launched a scheme to outsource facilities management for every public building in the state, including colleges and state universities! The plan impacts prisons, state parks and National Guard armories, too, which adds up to roughly 10,000 working people! The pay and benefits of these workers, including custodians, landscapers, electricians, and maintenance staff, would be threatened in order to "reduce operating costs." In the past, outsourcing has proven to be detrimental to working conditions and to the quality of service provided, and has not been proven to be a worthwhile investment of Tennesseans’ hard-earned tax dollars. Governor Haslam has stated that individual schools, including UofM, SWCC, and UTHSC, will have the opportunity to "opt out" of this outsourcing plan this spring semester. President David Rudd of the University of Memphis has promised the UofM will opt out. However, we need him to say that publicly, and President Tracy Hall of SWCC, and Chancellor Steve J. Schwab of UTHSC must speak up as well. We also call on the University of Memphis Board of Trustees to take a stand against the outsourcing. Over the last year and a half, thousands have protested, spoken out, called-in, written columns, and passed student and faculty resolutions in opposition to privatization, but Governor Haslam continues to move ahead with this unpopular plan. As students, faculty, alumni, staff, and concerned citizens, we care about what happens to our campus workers. With this petition, we appeal directly to each head of their institution to listen to what the university and greater Memphis community is saying: NO OUTSOURCING! Replace Obamacare with Medicare for AllWe believe that a single-payer "Medicare-for-all" system of health insurance is the best way to insure affordable health care for all American. Representative John Conyers (Democrat - Michigan) has introduced a bill that would put such a system in place. Republicans are repealing Obamacare, but don't have a suitable replacement. Conyers does. This is an opportunity for President Trump to lead a bi-partisan effort to do something great for the American people.241 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Winston Apple

President Trump*We call for an asterisk to be placed by any listing of Donald J. Trump as president of the United States. This asterisk should remain next to any listing of Mr. Trump as president until two issues have been resolved regarding the legitimacy of his presidency. First, we need assurance that the election was not subject to massive voter fraud. Mr. Trump has alleged that between 3 and 5 million votes were cast by ineligible voters. While most of the country appears to understand that these allegations are false, these claims undermine general confidence in our voting system, particularly in the results of this election. There is no reality in which voter fraud of the scale alleged does not render the election illegitimate. Second, we need assurance that Donald J. Trump did not collude with the Russian Government to influence the outcome of the election. Documents leaked to the public regarding intelligence assessments raise significant concerns about the relationship between Donald J. Trump and the Russian government. To date, 16 U.S. intelligence agencies have implicated the Russian government in a scheme to influence the outcome of our election in favor of Donald J. Trump. Public concern demands an investigation, already promised by Congress, to allay doubts caused by Russian interference regarding the integrity of this election. The asterisk can be removed if and when these two substantial concerns regarding the legitimacy of this election are resolved. If these concerns cannot be addressed, we demand that the name Donald J. Trump, when listed as president, always appear with an asterisk to denote the questionable legitimacy of his rise to power.36 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Lara Embry

Congress: Investigate President Trump's claims of voter fraudPresident Trump has, as a candidate and more recently as President, made statements of fact that cannot be substantiated or, in some cases, are proven false. There is bipartisan support for the lack of evidence for the President's claims of large scale voter fraud. With this claim, he has taken a much larger step that challenges and potentially undermines the very foundation of our democracy.35 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Peter Scanlan

Women’s Pledge of UnityPledge to protect immigrant families! The Women’s March is a beautiful reminder of the power we wield when we come together. And it is just the beginning of a growing national opposition to President Trump’s politics of hate. President Trump has already taken action on his anti-immigrant platform. With recent executive orders, he laid out plans to build a border wall, punish local governments that stand with immigrants, and increase detentions and deportations of families and children. He has threatened to target Muslim communities and dismantle life-saving refugee programs. He has promised to end important programs like DACA — which allows nearly 1 million DREAMers to live, work, and go to school in the United States. It’s up to us to transform the momentum of resistance into a movement with the power to fight these dangerous policies. Together we can protect our families, our communities, and our democracy. Eleven year old Leah joined hundreds of immigrant leaders at the Women’s March in Washington, DC. Leah’s mother is undocumented, so she traveled from Miami, Florida “to tell the new president that girls are STRONG and that we will defend our immigrant mothers and community from hate. WE ARE HERE TO STAY!” “As a kid I live with the fear of being separated from my mother everyday. It’s not fair. It breaks my heart. However, as part of the We Belong Together campaign I know my family is not alone. We are a community of women and kids who love each other.” In February, Leah will be returning to DC with a delegation of children from Florida to deliver the Pledge and show that immigrant families like hers are here to stay. Join Leah and sign the Women's Pledge of Unity today!1,015 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Leah
