• 6 feet LWSD lunches by adding outdoor or other means
For LWSD Families, teachers, staff, and community members: If you feel this initiative aligns with your preferences, we strongly encourage you to consider signing this petition to demonstrate your support. Additionally, by signing this petition, you help articulate to school leadership the level of interest for the rain or shine outdoor eating option and the importance of 6-feet spacing for indoor lunches. LWSD Teachers & Staff We fully support our outstanding LWSD teachers and staff and applaud the dedication and work each has done to provide the best possible learning environment for our students. This option serves to keep teachers and staff safe while elevating the unique LWSD student experience. LWSD Leadership Please help us. Indoor, 3 feet or less spaced, unmasked eating is a dangerous proposition. Science tells us this. Our local laws and federal government underscore this (pre-vaccine) by limiting and temporarily closing indoor dining when community spread rates were high. Implementing new and sudden protocols may be inconvenient - and even expensive, but in the final analysis, it is the right thing to do for the health of our students, our schools, and our community. * There are elementary school principals fully on board and supportive of this effort and for that, we are encouraged.

  • Tell President Biden: Don't defend Trump's immigration policies!
More than six months after Trump left office, Attorney General Merrick Garland continues to defend some of Trump's worst immigration policies. The Biden administration recently defended a Trump-era policy in court that prioritizes the highest wage earners for a high-skilled worker visa program. And now the DOJ is defending a public health order issued by Trump as a way to expel most migrants without allowing them to seek asylum in the midst of the COVID pandemic. Merrick Garland's Department of Justice has the opportunity right now to turn the page on Trump's hateful anti-immigrant attacks. They must stop defending his policies in court and consistently uphold Joe Biden's stated commitment to protecting and expanding immigrants' rights. Will you add your name? President Biden, stop defending Trump's anti-immigrant agenda!

  • Divest the federal government from fossil fuels!
Currently, ExxonMobil is one of the top ten holdings in one of the main pension funds the federal government manages for their workers. But Federal employees have been organizing to get their pensions divested from fossil fuels. Oil companies are not only destroying our climate, they're also increasingly risky investments without a long-term future. As the climate crisis worsens, now is a crucial moment for President Biden to deliver what these workers want -- and what our planet needs. Here's how it would work: Biden could either author an executive order telling the board that controls the federal pension fund to divest from fossil fuels. Or, he could nominate new board members to its board. This second option is possible, since four of the five seats are occupied by people whose terms expired under President Obama, and the fifth is vacant. Federal pension divestment is an important tool in the fight against the climate crisis. It would set a precedent for investors around the world--making it clear that fossil fuels are an unethical and unwise investment.

  • Stop the Amazon-MGM merger!
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation into Jeff Bezos and Amazon's $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM studios. The MGM merger would add a catalog of more than 4,000 films and 17,000 episodes to Amazon’s Prime Video service and give it control of future production, increasing its monopoly over content, and allow it to control intellectual property rights that will stretch over other businesses. This comes along with news that Amazon is planning to open department stores across the nation to take over brick and mortar space. We need FTC Chair Lina Khan, an antitrust advocate, to block this merger as a critical first step to reining the mega company in. We've written a letter to Khan with more than 30 other organizations to ask the FTC to do just that, and now we need to add your voice to build momentum. Sign the petition: Tell the federal government to stop Amazon from buying MGM!

  • Congress: Billions for bullets should go toward helping people instead
As the humanitarian crisis grows and the U.S. military prepares to leave on August 31 saving as many Afghan lives as possible must be the U.S. government’s top priority. But here’s something you may not know: there are ample funds available to ease suffering on the ground and support Afghans to rebuild their lives — like inside next year’s astronomical Pentagon budget, where more than $3 BILLION is currently earmarked for the now-collapsed Afghan National Security Forces. Congress is deciding where those funds will go as we speak. And the possibility that this money could instead be spent on a few more F-35s or bombs is all too real — and should be immediately, completely rejected. That’s why we need to get loud NOW Add your name to call on Congress to immediately use any money that was previously going to be spent supporting Afghan security forces to help save Afghan lives.

  • Petition: Stop Apple giving kids access to chat-with-strangers apps
Personal stories underscore the danger posed to kids by such apps. After confiscating her 14-year-old daughter’s phone, one mom was shocked to find a flood of sexually explicit photos from older men delivered via stranger-chat app Yubo, many pressuring her to reciprocate. Reviews on the App Store detail how many of these apps are filled with people asking for sexually explicit images. At a minimum, Apple must: - Block anyone whose Apple ID shows they are underage from adult-only apps - Require that adult apps institute substantive age verification processes and close loopholes that allow them to ignore evidence that a user is underage. - Enforce Apple’s own guidelines and remove chat roulette apps from the App Store

  • Remove the Racist John R. Monaghan Statue from Downtown Spokane, WA
The dedication of the Monaghan Statue in 1906 was tinged with anti-Sāmoan racism and white supremacy, and the statue has served as a rallying point and a justification for these attitudes ever since. This monument - like the war it memorializes - is unjust. The monument represents an injustice in that it attempts to honor Monaghan using a distorted and false depiction of both the war and an entire people. For Spokanites unfamiliar with our Pacific Islander community, the monument represents an injustice in that it perpetuates a single, erroneous story about Sāmoans and Sāmoan-Americans as a savage foe and robs both them and us of our humanity. For Spokanites and the many U.S. veterans whose roots are in the Pacific, the monument represents an injustice by inflicting ongoing pain and offense in its misrepresentation of their ancestors and the devastating impact of that war on their community. That pain and offense extends beyond our local community to Pacific Islanders throughout the U.S. and overseas, for whom Spokane, Washington, is known as the place with the offensive Monaghan Statue. The widespread reputation of this monument is a humiliation to our Spokane community and it must be removed.

  • No more plastic water bottles Costco!!!
We need as many voices speaking out as possible to stop the waste being created on a daily basis at Costco. Plastic doesnt just "go away", and the fact that the manufacturers are not made to take responsibility for the trash they create is unacceptable anymore. Taking water from the earth, thereby depriving citizens of it, and bottling it to make a profit, as well as destroying the earth with plastic, is obscene and should be treated as such. Please sign and share my petition with as many people as you can, and lets see if we can change one thing that is wrong now simply by collectively speaking out! Thank you!

  • Sign the petition: Break Up Amazon!
Amazon continues to feel the heat in Alabama. Earlier this month the NLRB ruled that Amazon unfairly tampered with the union vote in Bessemer, Alabama.1 Amazon used their massive power to pressure the postal service into putting a mailbox at the workplace in Alabama -- which may have caused workers to feel Amazon could see when and how they voted, potentially influencing the result. This is just further proof that Amazon has too much power, and is abusing it to undermine workers' rights. One way we can help fight back: pressure the federal government to break up Amazon. Sign the petition: Tell the federal government to support workers and break up Amazon! Amazon isn't just a tech giant, it's a global monster with tentacles gripping nearly every part of daily life. And Amazon workers, especially Amazon warehouse workers, continue to feel the squeeze. Amazon warehouse working conditions are notoriously bad. So much so, the National Council of Occupational Safety and Health named Amazon one of the most dangerous employers in the country.2 On top of that, during the historic heatwaves earlier this summer, Amazon warehouses pushed workers to their physical brink, without providing air-conditioning. But the tide is turning. Activists like you and me are speaking out and demanding Amazon be held accountable. In Alabama, that might mean a new worker union election. But we can't stop there. Amazon has proven time and again that they have too much power and influence, and use it to undermine their workers and their right to a safe workplace. So now it's time for action. Together we can raise our voices and pressure Congress to act boldly to break up Amazon's monopoly. Sign the petition: Tell the federal government to break up Amazon! Sources: 1.
