21st Century Fox, the nation's largest media company, has announced plans to purchase Time Warner. But the FCC and the DOJ can still stop this monopolistic merger. The deal would cement 21st Century Fox's stranglehold over an industry in which consumers already have few options and face steep prices and unreliable customer service. This merger would mean even less competition over price and service. Cable News is the more important than ever, whether you want to get a job, start a business, get an education or just watch a movie. But the United States already trails every other developing nation in internet speeds and affordability. We need telecom companies to expand access and build out 21st century infrastructure -- instead of just gobbling up the competition -- to bring us up to speed with the world. Instead, telecom CEOs are only concerned with maximizing profit. President Teddy Roosevelt would roll over in his grave. This kind of monopolistic behavior must not be allowed. Tell the FCC and the DOJ to block the merger right now.

I worked in a sheltered workshop for over 8 years. I had the opportunity to assist individuals with developmental disabilities with social skills and personal hygiene, while they felt the sense of self-worth by performing work tasks and received supplemental income. The federal government wants to close sheltered workshops, where will these individuals go?

As a taxpayer and citizen of the United States I am concerned over the issues of campaign financing. specifically large corporate donations and super pacs like ALEC. I was alarmed to see that the Koch brothers were dumping exuberant amounts of money into states in an attempt to try to prevent the AFC act and medicaid funds, by influencing lawmakers. I am well aware of the Koch brothers agenda and their lack of respect for the environment, the laws of the land and humanity. Any politician or consumer who backs them is unAmerican.

It is becoming clear that FERC is an unelected and unaccountable agency, and the "public participation" in the permit proceedings are a sham. I am an intervenor in this project who lives in an area which would suffer large-scale regional impacts should this get built, against the wishes of the majority of people here. I have many friends and family who live in the gasfields of PA who have already suffered grave impacts, and development there would increase dramatically to supply this pipeline.

Breaking News: Negotiators in Vienna have announced that they are going to extend talks with Iran for another 4 months. These talks are incredibly important and it’s crucial that negotiators have the time to secure a deal that solves the Iranian nuclear issue. Even before the extension was announced, conservative lobby groups were calling the negotiations a failure and pushing to increase sanctions on Iran. John McCain has even said: “I think the sanctions that have been relaxed ought to be reimposed.” The President has made it clear over and over again the increasing sanctions on Iran during the negotiations will undermine diplomacy and take us down the path to war. Over the next few days representatives in Congress will be looking at legislation to increase sanctions - we need to let them know now that they must stand with the President and support diplomacy. We know our voices are crucial in these debates. It was your voices - through petitions, phone calls and meetings - that helped give diplomacy a chance last year, helped put the Menendez sanctions bill on ice and allowed the international community to reduce Iran’s nuclear stockpile. The city of Detroit has unjustly shut off the water of thousands of low-income Black and brown Detroit residents, threatening their health, safety, and livelihood. And matters are only set to get worse.(1) Residents who owe as little as $33 are having their water shut off with no warning. Seniors, the sick and injured, and families with special needs are left without running water and working toilets. People recovering from surgery cannot wash and change bandages. Children cannot bathe and parents cannot cook. And while the people suffer, the corporations are protected. The city of Detroit provides water at wholesale price to the wealthy suburbs; however city residents pay retail price for the water they receive. If parents cannot afford to restore water service within 60 days they are at risk of having Social Services remove their children from the home.(3) If water bills remain unpaid a lien can be placed on the home and the home can be sold. (4) This must stop NOW! The plan to cut off water to 150,000 households by the end of the summer is part of efforts sell off and privatize Detroit’s water system for corporate profits.(5) In order to make the utility attractive to investors, lower-income households are being forced to pay exorbitant rates for their water and sewer services, or see their access cut. Water rates have risen in Detroit by 119% in the last decade.(6) With unemployment rates at a record high, and the poverty rate at about 40%, Detroit water bills are unaffordable to a massive portion of the community. (7) Hundreds of thousands of low-income Black families are at risk. The city's water shut offs are in line with decades of racially discriminatory policies targeting Black and brown Detroiters, which have resulted in unjust home seizures, the separation of children from their parents, and the creation of serious health risks to entire neighborhoods.(8) By allowing thousands of people to be denied access to water and sanitation services, the U.S. government is violating the United Nations resolution codifying the human right to water and sanitation.
