On June 16, President Barack Obama announced that he was ordering his staff to draft an executive order banning discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees among companies that contract with the federal government. The executive order, which is estimated to affect up to 16 million workers, circumvents a Congress which is hostile to LGBT equality.

Items placed on a grave are generally for the purpose of grieving by family and friends of a loved one. The items are usually pertaining to the deceased and have great sentimental and emotional value. The majority of items placed on a grave by family and friends are valued at one hundred dollars ($100) or less. The emotional distress caused by theft of items from the resting place of a loved one should warrant the removal of these items being a felony, especially when items are removed repeatedly and/or the suspect has the items in possession. Caden Allen was tragically killed in an automobile accident when a box truck pulled a stop sign/red flashing light at the intersection of Hwy 55 and Hwy 242 in Johnston County on July 26, 2012. Items have been stolen off our thirteen-year-old son's grave (Caden Allen) four (4) times since he was buried in Lee-Johnson Cemetery. The first incident occurred on Mother's Day in 2013. The second incident occurred on Caden's birthday, October 21, 2013. Other dates are April 30, 2014 and June 1, 2014. The suspects were caught on camera on June 1, 2014 with items in their possession, including a personalized flag with Caden's name on it. Items from all four (4) incidents were found at the home of the suspects. Items stolen were monetarily valued between eighty dollars ($80) and one hundred dollars ($100) for each incident. Therefore, the suspects were only charged with misdemeanors. By changing the statute to make this a felony, it will impact those who steal from cemeteries and help lessen the emotional distress and trauma for families who have lost a loved one. Rhonda Norris has two family members buried in the cemetery: Annie Pearl Lee (her mother) and Landis Lee (her brother). She has also suffered financially due to expense to replace items and emotionally from the feeling of violation of the resting place of her loved ones. The items had been stolen over a period of time with the last incident occurring on June 1, 2014. Stolen items were recovered from the suspects' home where items belonging the the Allen family and the Johnson family were found. Blinda Johnson was another victim of theft in Lee-Johnson Cemetery. A wind chime had been attached to the headstone of Floyd D. and Christine Williams (Blinda's parents) for a long time. It was stolen on June 1 , 2014 and the suspects were caught on camera at the same time items were stolen off Caden Allen's grave. The persons caught were repeat offenders that have caused emotional distress for at least three families. Our goal is to reduce cemetery thefts by imposing stiffer penalties for such actions. This crime should be a felony.

For over thirty years, the public has had the right under federal law to access information (called Tier II reports) about facilities which store dangerous chemicals, including emergency response plans. But Attorney General Greg Abbott recently ruled that this information will now be treated as confidential and largely inaccessible to the public and media. The tragic explosion of the fertilizer plant in West, Texas last year reminded us of the very real dangers posed by hazardous chemicals. The media and the public needs more information, not less, about these facilities in order to protect our communities.

On June 15, 2014, the Associated Press reported that Texas' regulator of the oil and gas industry, the Railroad Commission, has adopted a policy to prevent its staff from doing media interviews. Instead, media may only speak with the commission's PR staff. Oil and gas production has contributed to air and water pollution, reduced property values and perhaps even earthquakes. With so much at stake, it's critical that the media be able to speak with the taxpayer-funded staff responsible for regulating the oil and gas industry.

Mayor Coleman has a chance to help kids in Columbus, OH, and across the whole country. Later this month, the Council of Mayors will consider resolutions in support of expanding quality early education to every child in America. Kids who attend preschool not only do better in school as they grow older -- they're also more likely to go to college and get a good job. But for many families, a quality preschool program is simply too expensive or not available. Last year a bipartisan bill was introduced in Congress that would help every child get access to quality preschool. We need more support from the local level to push this measure forward. Support from Mayor Coleman and his colleagues is the kind of local support that we will need to win. What we need to do right now is to demonstrate widespread support from people like you.

I refuse to have violence as a daily ingredient. I believe that when we are exposed to such content, what at first is gruesome with time it becomes normal, we can get used to violence, as humans we cannot remain sensitive to what today looks outrageous because we need to adapt. Whenever I have reported violent content pages to Facebook they claim they don't see violence in an image such as the ones displayed by "Peleas de perros" (a Facebook community whose name translates as Dog fights) for instance. This is the reason why I started this petition.
