Governor Bobby Jindal recently signed an executive order declaring a "religious freedom" act that allows businesses to discriminate against people on the basis of religious beliefs only hours after the Louisiana legislature shot down a bill that attempted to do the same thing, House Bill 707. The act particularly targets the LGBT community in the state of Louisiana and is a veiled attempt to allow open bigotry in the state. Jindal also passed a legislative bill which prevents Louisiana public entities from suing oil and gas companies. He has sold out his own state for personal interests. While this petition is mostly symbolic, please sign in order to send a clear message to Governor Jindal that this state will not be held hostage for his political grandstanding and personal ambitions.

Tim DeChristopher spent almost two years in prison for an act of civil disobedience when he peacefully disrupted a BLM oil and gas lease auction in Salt Lake City. The BLM aggressively pursued charges against DeChristopher. He broke the law and went to prison for it. Earlier this month, a group of protesters led by San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman, and including Cliven Bundy's son, illegally rode ATVs through a protected section of Recapture Canyon near Blanding, Utah. The canyon is protected because it houses significant ecological and archaeological sites. Indeed, local Native American tribes consider the land sacred. Yet Lyman and his band ignored pleas by local tribes and BLM officials and instead rode motorized vehicles over the protected land, calling it an act of civil disobedience. Lyman and his band broke the law. They should be held accountable. Tell US Attorney David Barlow and Utah BLM Director Juan Palma to hold the protesters and armed militia accountable for riding their ATVs through Recapture Canyon and breaking the law.

We, the undersigned, being people of conscience, call upon the McCrory Administration and the North Carolina General Assembly to recognize their moral obligation to assure that Duke Energy shareholders, not the people of North Carolina, pay to clean up all the toxic coal ash dumps. Additionally, decisions must be made in consultation with the communities currently and potentially impacted by the toxic waste, with particular concern to protect communities of color and low-income communities that have historically been targeted for the storage of hazardous waste.

North Carolina Waffle House server Shaina Brown was given a $1,000 credit card tip by a generous customer. But Waffle House did not let her keep the tip. (Charlotte Observer, 6/9/14) In this case, the generous customer heard the news and sent a check to Brown. But across the country, not only are servers paid as little as $2.13 an hour, they are also frequent victims of wage theft.

As a graduate of and teacher in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, I know how important it is both for our custodians and for our schools to be a part of the AAPS community. The last few years, our custodians have faced even larger wage cuts than teachers, and despite this have strived to keep our schools in good shape with a bare bones staff. This year, our custodians are facing the prospect of being laid off so that the board can outsource their jobs to even more poorly paid employees. This will hurt our schools and crucial members of our community who have worked hard to weather the funding storm with us in Michigan schools, and should be stopped. Savings should be found elsewhere until we can find a better way to fund education in Michigan.

We feel that this is not the right location for a Dollar General. A large corporate company in a small neighborhood is not a right fit. Childrens' bus stops are at this exact location and we feel is a danger to their well being and safety.
