• Build the Commons Building at Northfield High School
As families with students who are approaching high school age, we are concerned that DPS's significant changes to the design and construction of Phase I of the Northfield High School will put the success of the high school at risk. DPS is asking parents to send their children to a partially-built high school. Students will bear the risk of a future bond passage to complete what was scheduled to be built in Phase I when voters approved the 2012 bond. The planned Phase 2 on the 2016 bond was intended to build out needed capacity, not to finish the common spaces Phase 1 was to provide and that DPS construction services said would be more cost-effective to build all at once in Phase 1. As Denver residents, we are committed to this city and Denver Public Schools. The success of this high school is a city-wide issue. DPS has a chance to build this high school community where students from all over Denver can find their place, push their boundaries and succeed.

  • Label GMO Foods.
People close to me have problems aggravated by certain GMO crops, but they can currently never know if these are in the food they eat. Once in the environment, genetic modifications spread and infect other crops, plants or animals by cross-breeding. Side effects are predictable but commonly ignored by industry. Public knowledge of the scope of the changes of the past two or three years, and of the harm already done, is very limited. This begins to address that knowledge gap.

  • Leave Sunday Parking Meter Enforcement Alone
Air pollution caused by traffic congestion contributes to asthma attacks, especially for kids, increases the probability of cancer, increases the probability of heart disease, and increases the probability of premature death. The World Health Organization categorizes air pollution, including that from cars, as a carcinogen just like cigarette smoke. Parking meter enforcement on Sundays is proven to reduce traffic congestion because drivers are spending only 2 minutes circling, looking for parking instead of 4 minutes or more when Sunday meters were not enforced. See: http://sf.streetsblog.org/2014/04/01/reiskin-lets-keep-sunday-parking-meters-but-not-enforce-them/ http://sf.streetsblog.org/2014/01/16/mayor-lees-spineless-sunday-meter-reversal-bad-for-business-bad-for-sf/

  • Gender Equality in the Workplace
Women are largely absent from the top levels of corporate management, only 7 out of 100 of the highest earning CEOs in America are women! The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Office has recently issued some strong and detailed recommendations for removing barriers for equal pay and improve the status for women in the workplace. The Paycheck Fairness Act was a good beginning to the fight for equality, don't let this issue be set aside so easily. Tell the White House and Congress that this bill needs to be re-introduced and then passed!

  • Mosquito Management Needed in Stapleton
Male mosquitos are already swarming the neighborhood, which doesn't bode well for the summer months. Last summer it became excruciatingly clear that there is a need for mosquito population control in Stapleton's parks, open space and water retention areas. This is not only an issue of comfort, but also of protecting the health of our residents. The purpose of this petition is not to prescribe which measures are appropriate (spraying, adding fish to the ecosystems, etc.), but to draw attention to the need for an immediate and long-term solution.

  • The Jason and Philip Act
In 2003 on December 27th my brother Jason "JJ" Jaco and uncle Philip "Butch" Mocalis, Jr. were killed instantly by a female truck driver who suffured with schizophrenia and had not been taking her medicine Haldol, she had a hallucination stating cars cut her off which bystanders and witnesses stated that there were no other vehicles around. The driver was only charged with two counts of manslaughter (A slap on the wrist) and had her license taken away for any driving jobs in California, so she moved to Nevada and got a driving job for a school bus full of kids. When someone gets their driving privileges taken away for any driving jobs it should be nation wide not just the state it happened in. This is not right too many people are losing their loved ones to truck drivers and not getting compensated for their loss. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, NO MORE!!!

  • Tell Gables Residential to Build it Better: Ensure Good, Safe Jobs
Gables Residential is a prominent developer of luxury apartments in the Southern United States. We need help exposing how construction workers on numerous Gables projects have reported widespread cases of abuse, including: • Not being paid for their work – over $130,000 in wage theft • Denial of legally mandated rest breaks • Unpaid overtime and unsafe working conditions We need you to help us fight back. Workers Defense Project is asking that Gables becomes a Better Builder by ensuring that construction workers who help build their luxury apartments receive a living wage, have safe working conditions, and are able to earn a rewarding career in the industry. Gables has the opportunity to become an industry leader by investing in the workers who have labored tirelessly to help make Gables Residential profitable. We are asking Gables to take this opportunity to improve the lives of thousands of workers. Workers Defense Project (WDP) is a nationally recognized organization, which fights to improve the poor conditions in the construction industry. We have been acknowledged by The New York Times as “one of the nation’s most creative organizations for immigrant workers” and have recovered over $1 million in stolen wages for workers. WDP has signed landmark agreements with developers, which combine expanded safety protections and living wage requirements to improve working conditions. We are asking Gables to join these other developers in ensuring good, safe jobs for thousands of workers.

  • PA PUC Must Deny Sunoco Logistic Public Utility Status
Sunoco Pipeline LP petitioned PA PUC for public utility status, a move that would impact property owners and municipalities in the path of the Mariner East pipeline. As a public utility, Sunoco would have the power of eminent domain and would be exempt from local zoning requirements. A December 2013 PA Supreme Court ruling overruled Act 13’s evisceration of municipal zoning in gas operations and upheld our local government rights. We petition PA PUC to uphold the Pennsylvania Constitution and deny public utility status to the for profit entity, Sunoco.
