• International Olympic Committee: Consider Climate Pollution When Choosing Host Countries
In 2012, the International Olympic Committee released a "Sustainability Through Sport" report which recognized the threat climate change poses to the Winter Olympics and called for the world to reduce carbon emissions. And with only 6 of the 19 past Winter Olympic host cities estimated to be cold enough to host the games by 2100, you can understand why. Yet, the IOC chose Russia, the world’s largest crude oil producer and 5th largest climate polluter to host the winter games. Tell the IOC: protect the future of the Winter Olympics and weigh climate pollution when choosing host cities.

  • US Olympic Committee: Save the Winter Olympics, Reject BP's Sponsorship
If you've tuned into the Winter Olympics this year, chances are you've been inundated with BP commercials touting its sponsorship of Team USA in Sochi. But, while BP is funneling money to Team USA, they're simultaneously threatening the future of the winter games by their massive fueling of climate change. In fact, BP can count itself among 90 companies that have caused two-thirds of man-made global warming. In 2012, the International Olympic Committee released a "Sustainability Through Sport" report recognizing the threat climate change poses to the Winter Olympics and calling for the world to reduce carbon emissions. And with only 6 of the 19 past Winter Olympic host cities estimated to be cold enough to host the games by 2100, you can understand why. Tell the US Olympic Committee: it's time to stand up for the future of the Winter Games by rejecting BP as a Team USA sponsor. Please sign and share the petition today.

  • Montgomery Bell Park: Do Not Host the 2014 American Renaissance White Supremacist Conference!
Montgomery Bell Park in Dickson, Tennessee will be hosting a major annual conference of white supremacists for the third year in a row from April 25-27, 2014. This is the 12th conference of the white supremacist group American Renaissance (AmRen). AmRen is designated a hate group by a number of human rights organizations. The presence of a hate group composed of nazis and other fascists in Montgomery Bell Park is unacceptable and presents a clear and present danger to public health and safety. What is AmRen? Amren is a newsletter that publishes pseudo-scientific research which argues that people of color are intellectually and morally inferior to white people. The organization is led by a white supremacist named Jared Taylor. Previous attendees at the conference include Ku Klux Klan members (including former KKK “Grand Wizard” David Duke), neo-Nazis (such as Don Black who runs the neo-Nazi website “stormfront“), holocaust deniers, anti-immigration thugs, and other racist and fascist groups and people who promote racial hatred. Who is Supposed to be at the Conference This Year? Some speakers at this conference include: John Derbyshire an ex-writer for the National Review who was recently fired for a racist rant he published advising white parents to teach their children to “avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally”, “before voting for a black politician scrutinize his/her character much more carefully than you would a white”, “do not act the Good Samaritan to blacks in apparent distress”, etc. He currently writes for a white supremacist and anti-immigration website called vdare where he wrote recently that, “White supremacy, in the sense of a society in which key decisions are made by white Europeans, is one of the better arrangements history has come up with.” Jack Donovan, a homophobe and “Men’s Rights Activist” who openly calls for violent attacks on LGBTQ people and is an advocate for fascism. Sam Dickson an anti-Semite who is a former lawyer for the Ku Klux Klan and holocaust denier. He is a white nationalist who attacks affirmative action, interracial marriage, gays and lesbians, and immigration. Andrew Brons who is a British nazi who leads a far-right organization called the “British Democratic Party” that is composed of other fascists and nazis. Jared Taylor who believes that black people are genetically predisposed to having lower IQs than whites and has stated in an article published on his website that, “Blacks and whites are different. When blacks are left entirely to their own devices, western civilization, any kind of civilization, disappears.” What Can We Do? Join us Saturday, April 26 at 4pm outside the Montgomery Bell Park Inn and Convention Center to protest these nazis and white supremacists! You can contact Governor Bill Haslam at 615-741-2001. You could also call Commissioner Bob Martineau of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) at 615-532-0106 or you could call Montgomery Bell Park and voice your concerns at 615-797-9051. If you would like to contact us for further information about the protest on April 26 or to let us know how your conversation went with the Governor's office or other representative please email us at [email protected] Here is an example of what you could say: "Hello my name is _____. I am concerned about the American Renaissance (AmRen) white supremacist conference that Montgomery Bell Park is planning to host from April 25th through the 27th. I see the decision to host this conference as an irresponsible promotion of racist ideology and if you do not cancel the conference I will no longer be able to patronize the Montgomery Bell Park Inn and will be advising my family and friends to do the same. American Renaissance is a hate group composed of nazis and other fascists and its presence in the park is a clear and present danger to public health and safety. This is unacceptable and I urge you to take immediate action on this issue."

  • Do NOT confirm Anne Hoskins to the Public Service Commission of Maryland!
Anne Hoskins, Senior Vice President for Public Service Energy Group (a publicly traded New Jersey -based energy company), was a utility executive for six years and served in all three of its subsidiaries before becoming Governor O'Malley's newest appointee to the Public Service Commission of Maryland. Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have identified PSEG as the 48th-largest corporate producer of air pollution in the United States, with roughly five million pounds of toxic chemicals released annually into the air. Major pollutants indicated by the study include manganese, chromium and nickel compounds; sulfuric and hydrochloric acid. (Political Economy Research Institute Toxic 100 (Study released May 11, 2006)). The nuclear division of the Public Service Enterprise Group, operates two nuclear reactors and a building on a small farm in Lower Alloways Creek Township, N.J., in rural Salem County at the Salem Nuclear Power Plant. (Wikipedia) One of the highest known radioactive tritium readings ever, was discovered in 2002 at the Salem facility. Tritium leaks from the reactors spent fuel pool contaminated groundwater under the facility (located on an island in Delaware Bay) at a concentration of 15 million picocuries per liter. That's 750 times the EPA drinking water limit. According to NRC records, the tritium readings in 2003 still exceeded EPA drinking-water standards. Highly elevated tritium levels have continued for years. Tritium found separately in an onsite storm drain system measured 1 million picocuries per liter in April 2010. (Yahoo.com. AP IMPACT: Tritium leaks found at many nuke sites By Jeff Donn - AP National Writer | AP – Tue, Jun 21, 2011.) Also during 2010, PSEG Nuclear, discovered 680 feet of corroded, buried pipe that is supposed to carry cooling water to Salem Unit 1 in an accident, according to an NRC report. Portions of the corroded pipe had worn down to a quarter of its minimum required thickness, though no leaks were found. The piping was dug up and replaced. The operator had not visually inspected the piping - the surest way to find corrosion - since the reactor went on line in 1977, according to the NRC. PSEG Nuclear was found to be in violation of NRC rules because it hadn't even tested the piping since 1988. (Tritium leaks found at many nuclear sites, The Associated Press , Published: 6/21/2011 7:28 AM | Last update: 6/22/2011 7:29 AM). According to the "Maryland Manual On-Line" it is the function of the Public Service Commission of Maryland to inspect facilities and check them for safety and efficiency. Anne Hoskins' company violated NRC regulations by failing to perform the basic task of testing a pipe. How can we rely on her to oversee the all of the electric and gas utilities operating in the state of Maryland? Do NOT confirm Ms. Hoskins to the Maryland Public Service Commission.

  • Our state needs a public option
Private insurers will always put profit and executive compensation above the well being of their their customers. With Wall Street downgrading any insurance company that does otherwise, we'll never be able to overcome that attitude, but we can make insurance companies compete with a public option that takes a very different, much more customer-centered approach. Such a true public option would provide better care for less money, because policyholders wouldn't have to subsidize shareholder profits, big CEO bonuses, or expensive marketing campaigns. Let's create that public option, the sooner the better!

  • Convict Michael Dunn
To many young black men are being murdered and their perpetrators are walking away. This is Trayvon Martin all over again! Only afterward did the world see that Zimmerman should have been convicted. Don't let another child murderer walk away. Michael Dunn provoked the incident by getting out of his car and approaching the teens. His court testimony has been inconsistent, he never called 911 instead he drove 2 hours away. While the teenager Jordan Davis lay dying from 3 bullet wounds including one in his back. While sitting in his Dodge Durango.
