Walmart, the American multinational retail giant, currently sells Crickett Firearms, a line of rifles that are marketed to very young children under the tagline “My First Rifle.” These weapons often look like toys, coming in colors like pink and orange. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has made it clear that “the safest home for children is one without a gun.” According to a past president of the AAP, “Young children are curious, and are often unable to remember or follow safety rules ... When you combine these traits with access to guns, the consequences can be tragic and permanent.” As the second largest public corporation in the world, Walmart says “we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far on our journey to become a more…responsible business.” But responsible businesses do not market weapons to young children.

Last year, the Supreme Court gutted the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. Since then, state legislatures across the country have raced to implement new restrictive laws that would do exactly what the Voting Rights Act was meant to protect against. We have a golden opportunity to stop that. Right Now. On January 16, 2014, Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and John Conyers (D-MI) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced new bi-partisan legislation—the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014—that would strengthen the Voting Rights Act. This bill isn't perfect, but is the best vehicle we have for restoring the rights struck down by the Supreme Court last year. Improving and passing this bill won't be easy. Already, opponents are gearing up to derail its passage. Despite the fact that the bill is bi-partisan, it's not guaranteed to pass. Join us in calling on members of Congress to improve and co-sponsor this vital bill.

I am deeply saddened and offended by this cavalier display for the murder of Trayvon Martin.

The governor and the legislature need to focus on closing Iowa’s income gap and make sure everyone has a fair opportunity to get ahead. This would address those issues without the state having to spend a single dollar. We can't wait for Congress to help our state's working people.

Although Union County has many excellent schools, they are severely overcrowded and our students deserve the opportunity to attend highly successful charter schools that can provide unique academic programs without overcrowded classrooms or buildings. At a recent GOP gubernatorial debate, State Sen. Bill Brady said he's heard from manufacturers that people on unemployment are "enjoying" it too much and turning down job offers. He said, "we've got to motivate people back into the workforce" by cutting unemployment insurance. [1] Millions of Illinois residents have used or are currently using unemployment benefits — because jobs were few and far between. State Sen. Brady's comments are disrespectful and show he doesn’t understand what it's like to struggle in this economy. We must fight back against big money special interests and prevent super PACs and dark money interests from drowning out the voice of everyday Americans. One way to protect the voice of everyday Americans is by encouraging them to make small campaign contributions. Rep. Sarbanes' new Government by the People Act does this by matching small donations at a rate of $6 to $1, and by providing a $25 refundable tax credit for contributions.

We all pay taxes. In exchange for this, the government creates agencies which are designed to serve us and keep us safe. We have seen massive failures by these agencies, and demand that these failures are accounted for, and that responsible parties are replaced with competent individuals who will perform their duties in a fashion that will keep our community safe.

I think we have a right to know what we are eating. I don't want to eat GMO's. I have read GMO's increase acne, allergies and cause bad skin problems. I read GMO allergies are becoming more elevated as no one knows the long term effects of eating all GMO diet.
