• Historic Preservation Commission: Allow Pirate-like slogans on Rum Barrel Rubbish Bins
The original proposal for the Rum Barrel Rubbish and Recycling Bin project included the painting of anti-litter slogans in a pirate-like font and the old-style vernacular of men of the sea. A Committee member had mis-givings about the pirate-style slogans and suggested the slogans be more in the local crucian dialect. I agreed to submit some slogans in more of a local dialect for consideration and the committee agreed to research how other jurisdictions label bins in historic areas, make some suggestions, and ultimately choose 2 to 3 slogans for the barrels. I sent the committee copies of the original slogans, as well as some translated into the crucian dialect, and 5 additional slogans penned by a local crucian and a playwright. The committee's response was to reject all the slogans because they would not "maintain the dignity of the historic setting" and suggested the barrels be labeled with "TRASH BARREL" or "RUBBISH BARREL" or "RECYCLING BARREL". Which do not maintain the dignity of the historic setting any more than pirate slogans. The original slogans we suggested for garbage bins were: "Pitch in, not o'er th' side" "Don't Foul th' waters Matey" "Don't be a Tosser, Pitch in" "Stash yer Trash here" "Put Rubbish in er Place" "Don't trash your town" "Mash it, trash it, toss it in dis basket" "Gimme yer Rubbish, Mate" and for Recycle Bins: "Aluminum Loot only Mate!" Most recently we've asked them to consider 1 or 2 shortened slogans for rubbish: "Stash yer Trash" and "Pitch In" . And for recycling bins, "Aluminum Loot Only"

  • Limited Purpose Annexation
Members of our community have moved to this areas to be away from the city and all the surcharges. This includes using the land for agricultural business or just leaving in a quiet area without all the hassle of the city. Some of the land owners have passed their land from generation to generation without the need of the city. The county provides all the resources required for the land owners and the need of the city is not required. Please allow us to have a vote in the limited purpose annexation.

  • Tell the EPA to Stand Up to Big Oil on KXL
Ever since the Keystone XL pipeline was first proposed, the Environmental Protection Agency has been a strong voice inside the Obama administration, insisting that the State Department’s environmental review of Keystone XL consider the climate impacts of Canadian tar sands development. But there are now troubling signs that the EPA may be bowing to pressure to back off its critical comments on this biased review. Two days ago, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy echoed a favorite talking point of pipeline proponents to The Boston Globe when she said that oil from the Alberta tar sands will find its way to market with or without Keystone XL. If we don’t act, this could be the first step in EPA moving towards accepting the pipeline. Please send a letter to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy asking that the EPA stand strong on Keystone XL.

  • Dismantle the School to Prison Pipeline: Establish Restorative Justice Programs
African-American students have become a target in our public schools and victims of implemented "zero tolerance" policies. Unnecessary disciplinary actions discourage high academic expectations and destroys confidence in a learning environment. Excessive punishment generally encourages academic failure and dropping out of school, which more than often leads to arrest. Students who drop out of school, are 3.5 times more likely of getting arrested. This system of pushing kids out of school and into the criminal justice system, disproportionately affects minority students and those with learning differences. Let’s find a better solution to making our schools safe and educate children instead of incarcerating them.

  • Florida Virtual School should be able to test their own students!
It is time to change Florida State Statues and education funding from the Florida Department of Education to allow Florida Virtual School to administrator State tests instead of having to take kids to zone schools. We shouldn't have to even have a zoned school other than the school we are registered in being Florida Virtual School.

  • PLASTIC WASTE BAN
Congress must form and commission a special committee to identify the worst offenders of the manufacturing of products that are currently filling up our landfills and oceans at an unsustainable rate, and pass laws that force these companies to change the way they package their products. Whales are washing up on our beaches with bellies full of plastic trash. The abhorrent conditions in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch threaten the sustainability, health and the future of human life on this planet, but is also a threat to the American Economy and costs millions of dollars to various industries each year by killing fish and destroying equipment. This absolutely cannot go on.

  • Pay Government Contractors Who Were Affected By The Shutdown!
I am a government contractor who was furloughed during the government shutdown. I am a recent college graduate that has considerable student loan debt, and lives mostly paycheck to paycheck. I cannot afford to miss a paycheck. I am now forced to choose between paying my rent on time or buying groceries. I know there are a lot of other government contractors and consultants that are in my shoes. It isn't fair that our livelihoods are affected because Congress cannot get their act together! The possibility of another government shutdown in January is looming in the back of our minds. How will we make ends meet if we are furloughed again? We work for the government, so why shouldn't we receive back pay?! This Huffington Post Article offers some more insight into the issue: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/17/government-contractors-shutdown_n_4117963.html
