• Tea Party Republicans: Stop holding the country hostage!
My son-in-law is being furloughed. He is working on national security projects, which were approved by the Congress! How can he pay his bills, including his mortgage? That is for starters; he has a young family and now must scale back on his purchases, thus jeopardizing the economy. He is proud but he may have to ask us for money, which he does not want to do.

My father served 33 years in the U.S. Navy, starting with WWII through the Vietnam War. He and his generation made it possible for me and my generation to enjoy the many benefits of our society. Congress should respect this legacy and behave responsibly with respect to the functioning of our government and begin to act for the common good.

  • Invoke the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling and prevent default.
The 14th Amendment states, “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payments of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion,” the critical sentence says, “shall not be questioned.” The President can use it to prevent extremist elements in Congress from using the debt ceiling as economic extortion to force right wing policy on him, Congress and the American people.

Republican extremism has impacted me because cuts to food stamps have caused me to fall deeper and deeper into poverty! I am elderly and handicapped, but am taking the brunt of cuts in benefits virtually every year--and now have received a letter that Congress has allowed another cut effective in November! You cry so loud on cuts to wealthy, but do nothing on cuts to the poor. You are NOT representing the mass of people when you promote such narrow ways and values! Start representing everybody, not just a few wealthy people and corporations.

My son-in-law has been furloughed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and my son's RadioShack store near the base is suffering from a decline in customers. Each man has children, one with autism. We are all affected by the economic slowdown that is resulting from this stupid Republican shutdown! Shame on the Republican Congresspeople who cannot accept that the Affordable Care Act is the law.

This is the law, upheld by the Supreme Court, and designed to provide access to health insurance to those who don't have it or can't get it. You cannot shut down the government just because some in your party have decided they don't like it. Our country doesn't work that way.

I have enough money saved up to go to Yosemite National Park but gates won't open until late October so the shutdown has delayed our trip. Why aren't you paying attention to your colleagues to end this shutdown? You've got 17 other fellow members who voted for President Obama in those districts, but you're not sure if you'll vote with Democrats to get a clean CR, attached with Obamacare. Open the government again, by the people for the people.

Republican extremism has impacted me because I lost faith, seeing how Republicans react to a program that was enacted by law.

A dear friend's husband who works for the park service is on indefinite leave. She works full-time, but does not make enough money to support both of them financially for the long term. They have no idea when he will draw another paycheck. This could mean economic ruin for them in a short time as we live in one of the most expensive cities in the country. Another dear friend works for the IRS and has no way of knowing whether he will be able to pay rent and cover bills. He is using savings that should be used for real emergencies, not ones fabricated by the privileged members of Congress. Why should he have to dip into his emergency funds for basic survival? You in Congress are not at all impacted by this economically. Most of you are independently wealthy and your seat merely affords you more power. For most--if not all of you--your salary is just additional income. For shame! A friend who is a single mother cannot get her WIC benefits. She also relies on Head Start for daycare. She works very hard. Her daughter is happy, healthy and well-adjusted. But this little bit of assistance helps to subsidize what the absent father would contribute. She may have to get a second job but she has no idea who is going to take care of her child while she's working it. This is disgusting!

The government needs to work for all the people, not just the 1%, who I am not against. Not all 1%s are greedy. The wealthy of this country need the middle class to buy their goods. Your party just says no. The House hasn't produced any positive legislation. Please move forward, not backward!

  • Democrats: Stand Strong Against Tea Party Republicans
Tea party Republicans have held our government hostage for too long! During that time, more than 800,000 government employees have been unable to work, 3,200 children have been locked out of Head Start, and 401 national parks have been closed to the public. We've had enough -- it's time to end the shutdown, raise the debt ceiling and help America move forward.
