He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke is called a skilled writer and wrote to send a message to all people. His cultural identity is that of a Gentile (not of Jewish origin). The center of this story is about proclaiming hope in a tangible way for the all people of God. That changes circumstances and challenges systems that create unjust social and political policies. This verse speaks to my call because of the need for just policies on contemporary issues like gun control, poverty and education and this Government shutdown.

I believe the President of Howard University was forced out of office. I believe the Board of Trustee should be transparent and refuse to accept the President's alleged resignation. President Ribeau should be reinstated as President of Howard University.

Research shows that breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3D mammography, can detect breast cancer by as much as 40% which may increase the chance of catching the cancer at an early stage; a cost-savings and potential life-saving benefit. Research also shows that there is as much as 40% chance of decreasing false-positives, which can decrease unnecessary callbacks to women for further testing that can increase radiation exposure and increase costs.

The Discharge Petition option is almost never used, unheard of by most of our U.S. Representatives and almost certainly unknown to most citizens. A simple reminder that this procedure exists could spark an interest, and a way out for all parties concerned.

Chicago is a city that is turning more violent each day. Adults need to use common sense so as not to needlessly endanger children. Having two different high schools located so close to each other will put students into a situation that could explode for any reason. This whole situation could be defused by moving the site of the charter school by a few city blocks.

Like most Americans today I am disgusted by the antics and childish behavior of our elected officials. They can actively work against the best interests of their people, or even not work at all, and still receive salaries far outside the people they are supposed to represent. If someone from any other field were to behave in such a manner they would be out of a job.

I am a disabled U.S. army veteran. I believe in true democracy and the rule of law that should govern it. If you read the actual text of the U.S. Criminal Code, it is absolutely clear that the current Congress is "by force trying to prevent and delay the execution of a law"--the Affordable Care Act. I have seen no evidence that anyone is holding Congress to the law, and that's why I'm starting this petition. No one should be above the law.

Way too much legislation finds its way into law by being added to unrelated bills. Congress should make law on its merit alone, not because it was appended to a totally unrelated measure.

Our government is shut down. People in all fifty states are suffering, from tourists locked out of National Parks and Monuments to children with cancer unable to sign up for clinic trials to mothers with infants and children. This standoff needs to end and the way to do that is through a Discharge Petition to force a vote on a clean continuing resolution. Get our government back to work NOW!
