  • BMCC Language Department: Learn to Communicate!
We, the students of Italian 101, section 015 have the following grievances: The cost of the textbook was disclosed, that being said, the access codes were not included in all textbooks (sealed without one), cornering many students into relying on purchasing the access code online at over 50% the cost of the almost $200 textbook. This access code allows for one semester of access to a very buggy learning program that will have to be purchased again next semester, making this financial entrapment. The Access code grants access to a less than useful interface that students have not even been able to use to the fullest of it’s miniscule capabilities due to an incompatibility issue with the school computers that the language department should have rectified prior to the beginning of the semester. Many students are familiar with the necessity to check for compatibility prior to installing/using a computer program/site for one's own personal use, so this great lapse in judgment, reminiscent of the Cuny First debacle, along with a failure to communicate the issue and the steps being taken to rectify it, give the impression of disrespect, rudeness and a general disregard for students that are serious about their academic careers. As students, and individuals who have or have not been through careers prior to returning to school, we have also noticed the obvious disregard for the professors who are doing their best to try to deal with this despite the lack of support from the language department. Some of us have been seen to do more to assist the professors than the Language Department has cared to do, Including and not limited to: 1. Giving the professors a run down of the materials needed to carry out their jobs 2. Explaining whom is responsible for providing students with a syllabus 3. Providing adequate Tech support 4. Carrying out necessary troubleshooting when a program or system requires rectification 5. COMMUNICATING the acknowledgement any of the above mentioned issues (or any other issue that may effect our student careers) and are working towards fixing it. (Thank you to all the students that offered their help, free of charge, despite that not being your responsibility and the fact that someone else is getting paid to do that…) The failure to communicate has also created a lapse in time that the students cannot regain. While many of us wanted to give this course a chance, it will now be costly for us to drop the course. This is not how the students should be rewarded for their patience with the language department. We, the students demand better communication from the Language department (the irony is flabbergasting!) and viable options to assist us in making the best choice for our academic careers.

  • Staples: Honor Copic Price You Posted Online
Staples.com advertised the Copic marker sets they sell at unusual low prices. People such as myself took advantage and ordered them accordingly. we were given an order number for our purchases. Staples, unlike companies Zappos and United Airlines, chose to not inform the customers of their mistake and cancelled orders without notification. No formal action from Staples executives has happened, but instead chose to not honor their prices they posted. they also claim to be fixing the issue, but the prices have stood on the site after making the claims of typographical error. Staples should follow in the footsteps of Zappos and United Airlines and take responsibility for their actions. They should honor the price and fulfill orders made. People are sick and tired of being misled with bait and switch tactics and Staples should honor their customers.

  • Keep Jurors Safe: Mandate Juror Anonymity in All Trials
In 2008, I served on a jury that convicted a man of second degree murder. Two weeks ago, I received a long letter from the convicted felon. He obtained my name and subsequently, "through a personal investigator friend", my home address. What was meant to be an important commitment to civic duty, has turned into a deeply stressful situation and fear for my family's safety. This convicted murderer should have never been able to obtain my name.

  • Say no to the dog and cat tax
Article 1 Section 1 of North Carolina's Constitution - specifically guarantees us the Right of “acquiring, possessing, and protecting, property“ and “Equality of rights under the law“? A county should not be able to (legally) discriminate against one group of its citizens by taxing them for the same behavior as another group of its citizens not subject to the tax!

  • Keep the AG center in Baldwin
COUNTY BOARD NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU A lot of changes have been quietly happening in St. Croix County, and then, after the fact, the people find out what's happened and it's too late to turn back the clock. The fact that the administration committee decided to list the Agricultural Services and Education Center for sale is one of those changes. After years of past county supervisors and others planning the perfect office building for FSA/NRCS and the extension offices in the center of the county in Baldwin, a committee of 5 people who live along the St. Croix River, just 15 years later decided that it would be something that could be sold in order to have money to pay for the County Market building that was purchased to house the Health & Human Services and ADRC offices. The citizens of St. Croix County were not made aware of this because on the county agendas it was just listed "Capital Projects." That doesn't give any indication that they were planning to put the building up for sale. In the past, referendums for other issues didn't count for anything. The county board didn't listen to the people. Now the people haven't even been considered. Even though a study had been made about the Ag Center just three years ago, stating that it was in the perfect spot to serve the users of the services, this was not even considered by the committee. They were just looking at dollars instead of service. Because an appraisal showed that the property is worth more than a million dollars, it was decided that's where the board could get some money to pay for their other recent purchase of the County Market building in New Richmond, not figuring how much it would cost to move them elsewhere and how inconvenient it would be for the people that use the Ag Center. The thought that they can work from their cars with laptops just does not make sense. The extension staff needs files and space and a place to meet and hold workshops, lectures, etc. The board originally started the fiasco by not renewing the lease with the federal offices that rent from the county in the Ag Center. Being they failed to complete the paperwork on time, the federals started looking elsewhere to rent. The county was getting $13 a sq. ft., but wanted to double that to $25. Even if they wanted to raise the rent a small amount, say even to $18 a sq. ft, it would be enough to cover the cost of the maintenance which is $55,000 a year. But they wouldn't negotiate, so that left the federals with nothing else to do but look elsewhere. So now if the federals move out of the Ag Center, there is no income from that building, just expense for upkeep. And moving the extension offices to the County Courthouse in Hudson, which is crowded enough, would be more of a problem and they would have to spend money adding on to make room for everything. The county still has a about a week in which they could initiate renegotiations with the federals, but they have to act on it now. So bottom line is: If it's not broken, don't fix it! The Ag Center is in the perfect location for the people it serves. The 19 board members are the ones who will make the final vote to sell or not to sell. The majority of the people who use the Ag Center are not in Hudson, they're on the eastern two-thirds of the county. There have been too many decisions made affecting people's lives without consulting those people that are affected.

  • Seeking Parity for Congress -Congressional Reform Act of 2012
The people making the laws should have a direct interest in the results of their decision. How can people who place themselves above the people and the laws they were placed in office to represent and enforce truly have the best interest of their constituents in their heart when performing their duties. This hopefully awaken the social conscious of those serving in Washington and the Sates of each person who sighs this petition. The current economic crises we all seem to be revisiting on regular basis would likely quickly resolve themselves.

  • Indict Boehner for Treason
What the GOP lead House of Representatives is doing by failing to pass a budge for the government operations, and refusing to even allow the legislation to come to vote, despite the awareness that a majority of the Representatives are in agreement with passing the budget, is holding the government and it's operations hostage which could lead to extreme harm not only to the government but to a majority of the populace of the U.S. is illegal and treasonable, actions which can irreparably harm our country and its people, thereby giving aid and comfort to our enemies. This despicable behavior must be stopped. Sign this petition and send a strong message to the politicians that we cannot stand this abuse much longer.
