• Eliminate Student Debt with a Robin Hood Tax on Wall Street
College and University graduates in the United States today are drowning in insurmountable levels of student loan debt. This year, the Class of 2013 will graduate only to face some of the highest levels of student loan debt our country has ever seen. The average college graduate owes $23,300 after graduation - while unemployment rates continue to soar and college graduates are often unable to find work. A small tax on Wall Street transactions could eliminate the barrier of student loan debt for college graduates. A tax of 0.5% on stock trades and an even smaller tax on other financial instruments could yield up to $350 billion in new revenue per year. This money could be used to support federal student aid and grant programs. As young people conscious of the many social injustices our generation faces in the future, we recognize that revenue from this tax could also be used for job creation, healthcare development, education, environmental protection, and global health. We the undersigned - college students, recent graduates, and young professionals - call on our representatives in Congress to support Representative Keith Ellison's bill, HR 1579. This bill would enact a Robin Hood Tax on Wall Street and reduce the student loan debt that is crippling our chances of success.

  • LivingSocial must stop mixing assault weapons and alcohol
Since the massacre at Sandy Hook, many corporations have distanced themselves from the extremist, right-wing gun culture promoted by the NRA. But the daily deals web site LivingSocial has refused to take action in the wake of Newtown. LivingSocial continues to offer deals that encourage buyers to engage in a dangerous mix of alcohol and guns. In some cases, customers are even sold packages combining the shooting of assault weapons like the ones used in the Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colorado massacres, and a night of drinking beer or bourbon. Tell LivingSocial: End your gun and gun range deals that glorify drinking and shooting assault weapons. Some of LivingSocial’s deals, which are created by gun range proprietors, and then edited and solicited by paid LivingSocial staff, would make even the NRA blush -- and with good reason: 86% of gun murders are committed by people who were drinking before they opened fire. Most of the deals are careful to say that the shooting comes first, and then the drinking. But many of the deals include transportation on a party bus, and some have a meet-up point at restaurants that offer beer and burgers, giving buyers the chance to drink before the event begins. LivingSocial’s flip hucksterism buys into the gun manufacturers’ marketing strategy that seeks to bring new customers to shooting ranges in the hopes of pushing them toward gun ownership. But the evidence is clear that when more people own guns, more violence and death occurs. Competitors to LivingSocial, like Groupon, have already dropped their gun deals and have agreed not to offer them on their site in the future. Now LivingSocial must do the same. Tell LivingSocial: Enough is enough with your dangerous alcohol and shooting package deals. Remove gun deals from your site and promise not to offer them again. SOURCES: 1. • Meaningful gun control
The Newtown murders of 20 children the age of my own grandchildren illustrated the tragedy and folly of allowing "sportsmen" to play with their deadly toys. We cannot countenance the idea that our schools must be turned into armed camps because of a lack of weapons control.

  • Anti-Gay Marriage Propaganda: Doctrine from God?
I seriously doubt a loving and merciful God would harbor essentially a hate-clause for people who either choose to be or are born gay. It's not necessary for humankind to feel like they need to be self-proclaimed judges in this case, for God has that covered, and He thanks you very much! I have two brothers, one of which is gay, and I feel he was born that way. Does that automatically condemn him to the flames, and do the other two us men automatically get a better deal in being saved? I seriously doubt it. I vote for LOVE. For GOD IS LOVE. The time to act is imminent- no delay needed any longer.

  • Assisting Homeowners
Homeowners are facing a financial crisis and are afraid of losing their home to foreclosure. Many have lost their jobs due to no fault of their own and are still unemployed. The banks were bailed out and the homeowners were left out. Wealthy donors make huge campaign donations to politicians, why not donate to a worthy cause, (helping a homeowner save their home).
