• Protect Incarcerated People from COVID-19!
For the past two months, North Carolina officials have been quickly mobilizing to protect the general public from the spread of coronavirus. Local businesses have been shut down, court proceedings have been suspended for 30 days and public schools will be closed until early May. More recently, Governor Roy Cooper issued a stay-at-home order to prevent human suffering and the loss of life. However, missing in all of these announcements is a plan that will protect one of the most vulnerable populations in North Carolina - North Carolinians locked away in county jails and state prisons. All available public health guidelines recommend social distancing and vigilant hygiene as the primary tools to combat the spread of COVID-19. However, these directives are impossible to follow with thousands of people currently housed inside county jails and state prisons. Oftentimes, these facilities are closed and unsanitary environments that present the highest risk of illness from COVID-19. By their very nature, prisons preclude appropriate prevention measures. Public officials have DAYS, not weeks, to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Releasing as many people as possible from cages and stopping the flow of people into them is the best way to do it.

  • Tell Mitch McConnell: Forcing our cities and states into bankruptcy is shameful and indefensible
Mitch McConnell wants to force cities and states into bankruptcy instead of providing local governments with the resources and support we need during this global crisis. This idea threatens services Americans rely on everyday including schools, hospitals, essential services that keep our communities safe and clean and hundreds of thousands of jobs. Even members of his own party have called his plan “shameful and indefensible.” We can’t let Mitch McConnell destroy cities and states across the country – we must act to protect the well-being of our states if we’re going to survive as a nation.

  • Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Unilever and Nestle: Start Using Sustainable Packaging
Plastic bottles and bottle caps are the third and fourth most collected plastic trash in the Ocean Conservancy’s annual beach cleanups in 100 countries. Globally, more than a million plastic bottles are sold every single minute. In the U.S., only 30% of these bottles are recycled. In 2016 fewer than half the bottles bought worldwide were collected for recycling. (https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2019/08/plastic-bottles/) Because plastics are notoriously difficult to recycle for reuse, enormous efforts are being poured into finding ways to help break down plastics for recycling. A more impactful action would be to stop producing plastic packaging in the first place. If it's not produced, it can't pollute. More sustainable packaging alternatives (aluminum, glass) and even biodegradable solutions (bottles made from recycled paper; cans made from Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) – a starch material extracted from corn -- which can become soil after 180 days in a commercial compost system) are available. (https://earth911.com/living-well-being/recycled-beverage-containers/) https://earth911.com/living-well-being/recycled-beverage-containers/) (https://www.ecoproducts.com/polylactic_acid_pla.html). Consumers care about our environment, and demand action to reduce the plastic pollution that is harming it. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Unilever, Nestle: Be responsible corporate citizens and stop harming our environment. Change your packaging to non-plastic, sustainable options.

  • One client at a time
Independent Beauty Professionals rely on the income from clients. We cannot perform a service online. While the beauty industry is deemed “Non essential”, the ability to practice our craft is very ESSENTIAL to our livelihood. We are facing a grave financial hardship. Most self employed beauty professionals have not yet received any sort of financial assistants. These licensed professionals are trained in sanitation, disinfection and client safety for more hours than any grocery store associate. Sacramento beauty professionals are licensed by the state of California and should be able to serve customers with guidelines set in place. Allowing us to practice safe services would also decrease the potential providers offering home services by giving them a safe controlled clean environment to see clients.

  • Proposal for Expanded Hunting on Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge
Cabeza Prieta NWR is proposing a revised hunt plan to include the hunting of mule deer, mountain lion, Gambel's quail, mourning dove, Eurasian collared dove, cottontail rabbit, antelope and black-tailed jackrabbit, coyote, spotted skunk, bobcat, ringtail, badger, and kit and gray fox. This is a major change in their current hunt plan, which only includes bighorn sheep. Minimal data exists on the population size, distribution, age/sex ration, or reproductive rate of any of the species proposed to be hunted in the revised plan with the exception of bighorn sheep. How does the refuge know if any of the species proposed to be hunted in the revised plan can sustain a hunt? The USFWS must present the proof to show there is a demand by the public to hunt all the species mentioned above and that each proposed species to be hunted is present on the refuge in sufficient numbers to sustain a hunt. The USFWS also should conduct public scoping meetings on the revised hunt plan even though it is not required by law to do so. It is the prudent and responsible thing to do.

  • Don't cut funding to the World Health Organization during this pandemic
Dear fellow MoveOn member, Donald Trump is attacking the World Health Organization - in the middle of a pandemic. He announced he is halting funding to the WHO while a review is conducted. He's been claiming that the WHO severely mismanaged and covered up the spread of coronavirus, when in fact he is the one who's mismanaged the Covid19 outbreak, downplayed the crisis, ignored warnings from members of his own administration, refused to follow the advice of scientists and experts, and has been putting thousands of lives at risk as a result. By trying to deflect blame from his own administration to the WHO, Trump is putting at risk the global response to this coronavirus. Trump's heartless, reckless decision comes in the middle of the worst global pandemic in recent history. America contributed over $400 million to the WHO last year, making it by far the biggest donor. The organization’s budget last year was around $6bn. Losing American funding would be catastrophic for the WHO's ability to shape and guide a robust global response to Covid19. If the USA cuts funding to the WHO, vulnerable health systems in low-income countries will not get the life-saving help they need. Many thousands of lives hang in the balance in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. While some reforms in the WHO might be needed eventually, now is not the time. Right now the WHO is leading vital work. We need it. Slashing its budget is reckless endangerment at best, lethal at worst. Now is the time for solidarity, for love, for compassion, and for putting faith in true experts - scientists and doctors who can help save lives. This virus does not respect passports or borders. We are all only as strong as the weakest part of our response to this virus. Now is precisely the time when we need to work together as a global community. Sign the petition to stop Trump from crippling the World Health Organization, so it can save countless lives during the biggest pandemic of our lifetime. Thank you!
