• Protect Toree Walker
Toree Walker enrolled with Erie Community College to better herself. Her goal was to receive an education while using her athletic abilities in the process. Now because of a disorganized police filing, as well as erroneous reporting by the Erie Community College this child is being treated as a felon and in jeopardy of losing her athletic scholarship. More than that, my greatest fear is that her self-esteem and desire to want more may be tarnished because of how she has been neglected by school officials. To these detrimental outcomes we say shame! Shame on the Erie Community College for not doing enough to protect the rights and interests of one of their own students. The happy photograph Toree took with her Erie Community College teammates now has an accompanying mug shot to go along with it. She came to you, Erie, to be an athletic champion for your program, you at least owe it to her to be her defender. We are writing this letter to express our disdain for how Toree Walker is being treated and are asking that you as a school do more to protect this child’s best interests. I have been in touch with the National Action Network, Inc., and am continuing to build a broad coalition of support. We will continue to build avenues of support for her here locally as well as in the Buffalo area.

  • Rockland County Legislature: Support NY SAFE Act
Just like many of us, I have been deeply affected by the tragedy in Newtown, CT. After Governor Cuomo passed the NY SAFE Act, I was incredibly proud to be a resident of NY state. However, recently, I was troubled to learn that many of our Rockland County Legislators have voted in favor of a memorializing resolution to repeal the NY SAFE Act. Please join me in letting them know that we support the NY SAFE Act. In a March 11, 2013 the NY SAFE Act was supported by 61% of New Yorkers.

  • Return Industry to Oregon
I live in a once vibrant community that was dependent on the lumber industry. When it became nearly impossible for lumber mills to operate in the state of Oregon, some companies were cutting third or fourth growth wood, they were not the environmental devastators some make them out to be, yet these responsible job providers have been harmed by well meaning but overly broad policies that have shriveled the lumber industry in Oregon. Rather than penalizing the entire industry for the irresponsibility of a few, we should be encouraging those groups who handled things responsibly to return to work on Oregon's most largest natural, and more importantly, renewable resource. In these hard economic times, we cannot afford to let such a vast, valuable material sit idle while we import wood from elsewhere. Steps be taken to restart the timber industry, and in a responsible fashion. These steps must include common sense rules regarding replanting, and encourage local hiring by providing short-term (one calender year or less) tax breaks for lumber companies hiring Oregon residents.

  • Budget cuts and gun control
I live with a disabled child that needs funding for her services. I' sick and tired of the government nickel and dime policy for people with special needs. It is a shame. In addition as an educator the impact that these cuts will have on education in general will be devastating for students and teachers. Gun control is past due needed for obvious reasons just look at our statistics for crime.

  • The Real Food Act
The aim of this act is to require all food producers to drop colorful and misleading packaging in exchange for plain black and white wording and pictures on all of their products they sell as food. The only exemption from the above stated black and white packaging description is a photograph taken of the actual field the food is grown or raised in. This will provide a clear and precise picture of how a d where your food was grown or raised. The second part of the act has to do with the naming of food. The name shoudl reflect all of the ingredients instead of the current method of naming food that has been proven to be misleading. For example if you have eggs from an organic farm with no antibiotics used then you can call them eggs. However if you have eggs from a farm that uses antibiotics then you must call them the antibiotic name followed by egg. It is clear when you walk into a grocery store that there are many unhealthy foods being sold and they are being advertised in clever ways as healthy. If a company wants to sell food then they need to inform the public what they are selling. Misleading or direct misrepresentation of food like products has flooded the market. The costs from the businesses selling the fake food are rising health costs and increases in pollution as well as an unsustainable and unstable food source. The system has had multiple failures in regards to food safety while at the same time the genetic engineering of our food stock has created a situation where common diseases and pests will continue to pose an ever increasing threat until our system eventually fails. Thank you for your time, Christopher A. Oswald.

  • Bill Gates, will you invest in a CURE for AIDS?
The Gates Foundation has spent $2.5 billion on AIDS grants and $1.4 billion for a global health fund. They fund AIDS vaccine research to develop a preventive vaccine for AIDS, and AIDS treatment research, to develop medications that treat--but don't cure--AIDS. But they don't fund the search for a cure. Yet only half of people with AIDS worldwide can access treatment--the rest are dying; 1.7 million die every single year. People with AIDS, many in extreme poverty, must somehow obtain an expensive pill every day for the rest of their lives to stay alive. We are on the brink of a new era--but whether a cure for everyone happens in 5 years or 20 depends on whether scientists must wait, as they do now, for years to start their cure research projects due to lack of funding. Bill and Melinda Gates could make a pivotal contribution by providing adequate funding for researchers to grasp the scientific opportunities in front of them and accelerate a cure for all. (Don't forget to include both your first and last names :)
