Berkeley: Keep school board appointees on Peace and Justice CommissionThe Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission needs your help. This Tuesday, March 5, the City Council will consider a proposal by two city council members (Wozniak and Moore) that would dismiss the School Board appointees from the commission, and ban the School Board from making appointments in the future. The School Board appointees, historically more racially diverse and representing a broader spectrum of age and background than Council appointees, bring fresh perspective to the commission. At a time when the city's budget is strained, firing volunteers whose work will need to be picked up by City staff members is a shortsighted and misguided mistake.157 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Noah Sochet

VA Beach Public Schools - Add Lacrosse to school sportsAs many school systems across the country and state are considering downsizing or eliminating middle or high school sports programs, the sport of lacrosse, which is both a male and female team sport, should be taken into consideration to add to all public VA Beach middle and high schools. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport among high school programs across the country and in Virginia. One of the finest public institutions of higher education in the state, Univ of VA, has a top 5 men's and ladies lacrosse team, and the men won the NCAA National Championship two years ago. Although public High School systems in Northern VA and Richmond now offer school sponsored lacrosse programs, Hampton Roads does not, and VA Beach which is the largest city in the state and one of the largest school systems in the state, does not offer lacrosse as a VHSL team sponsored sport. More youth between the ages of 10 - 18 play lacrosse than participate in wrestling, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, or golf. We need to add this sport NOW to compete with the Northern VA and Richmond area school systems as well as the private schools.2,219 of 3,000 SignaturesCreated by Kim Savage

Excessive Property TaxThousands of individuals, families and small businesses have been leaving New York City and New York State and continue to do so because of an out of control property tax, especially in NYC. In spite of the governor's recent 2 percent property tax cap, its enactment is voluntary on the part of local municipalities and in New York City the cap is completely exempt. Already high rents have skyrocketed as a result of the city's relentless increases in property tax which seems out of control. Whether you rent an apartment, or own property, or run a business you are affected by the property tax and if you are a NYC/NY State resident your longevity as a resident is at risk.8 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Peter

Slam the revolving door shut!Even though Walmart's Sylvia Mathews Burwell is a Washington veteran, President Obama should NOT nominate her as his next budget director. Burwell left government to run the Walmart Foundation, the retail giant's philanthropic wing that strives to soften the fact that Walmart receives more than $1.2 billion in tax breaks, outsources American jobs, and denies its American employees full-time jobs, benefits, and over-time pay. To subsidize the paltry pay the average part-time Walmart worker earns, Walmart teaches its employees to apply for government assistance in the form of Medicaid and food stamps which 80% of Walmart's part-time employees must do to survive. Burwell's association with corporate America makes her unfit for the position of budget director.9 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Esther Allman
