Today, the Senate passed a strong bipartisan and inclusive VAWA reauthorization bill. It’s now up to the House to pass an equally robust version of VAWA quickly.

Norfolk Southern is proposing to expand its 47th Street Terminal rail yard in Englewood. The 47th Street Terminal doesn’t just handle rail but is an intermodal facility where freight is transferred from rail to trucks and vice versa. This will increase the size of the yard by 57 percent. It will also cause a significant increase in the number of trucks in and out of the yard. The project expansion would increase the amount of diesel soot going into Englewood’s air, worsening an already serious problem with air quality and asthma in the Englewood community.

But he needs to know that relegating some immigrants to a de facto second-class status for life isn’t good for immigrants or America. He has stated publicly that he supports a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US – but the process he’s designing could take decades, meaning that some people will be unable to become citizens in their lifetimes. This is not acceptable. We know the citizenship process must be straightforward and real; it should take a matter of years -- not decades.

Throughout the country, fossil fuel polluters and their right-wing allies like the American Legislative Exchange Council are working to roll back clean energy policies in a brazen attempt to halt our progress and protect their dirty profits.1 The latest attack is threatening Kansas's rapidly expanding wind power industry. The State Senate Committee on Utilities will soon consider an ill-conceived bill that would roll back Kansas's highly successful renewable energy standard, setting the state's clean energy economy back by four years. Senate Bill 82 would jeopardize Kansas's 12,000-employee wind power industry and could put a stop to new clean energy investments in the state.3 We need to speak out now to make sure Kansas remains one of the country's leaders in wind power. The attack on wind energy in Kansas is part of an orchestrated effort by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a secretive conservative group known for attacking clean energy laws and pushing voter-suppression schemes nationwide. ALEC is a powerful player in Kansas Republican politics, with both Senate President Susan Wagle (R-Wichita) and House Speaker Ray Merrick (R-Stillwell) on its board of directors. At least four of the 11 members of the Committee on Utilities -- Forrest Knox, Julia Lynn, Ty Masterson and Mike Petersen -- are formally affiliated with ALEC.
