  • No Polystyrene Pledge for Individuals
"Be the change you want to see in the world" – Ghandi Please sign this pledge to go polystyrene-free for your foodservice ware use. Polystyrene (plastic resin #6 code, aka styrofoam) is made from styrene, a dangerous chemical. It should not be used for cups, plates, forks, and take-out containers. Please note that styrofoam is just one form of polystyrene. Polystyrene can also be a clear plastic as well as colored. Look for the resin #6 code! For more information on the Young Activist Club and our No Polystyrene Campaign, please visit our web site: http://www.youngactivistclub.org

Dozens of local businesses have signed the pledge. We are now creating an online pledge to help additional businesses sign on. Once you make the pledge, we will send you a window decal to display and a stack of our informational bookmarks to give out to your customers. Our bookmarks explain the problems with polystyrene.

  • Real Homeland Security: Protecting Women and Children who are victims of terrorism in their own h...
The casualty rate for women and children each year in America is far higher than all the victims of the 911 terrorist attacks. Police responses are arbitrary, sometimes they follow the law and charge or even arrest the perpetrator if there is evidence of domestic violence; but all too often the man is told to leave for a few days, they don't call it domestic violence even though the circumstances meet the legal definition, they charge both parties even though the man is almost always the primary aggressor, if the woman scratched him, etc. in defending herself they charge her with domestic violence too and on and on. Also protective orders are often hard to get and/or aren't enforced by the police when the perpetrator violates one. The message being that the man still has the right to harass/threaten his wife and children, 'visit' her or the children and to take the children for visitation. I'm a clinical social worker and have had many women clients whose ex/husband had a documented history of DV but was still able to have unsupervised child visitation and one who even got cucustody of the children. She killed herself in her despair.

  • Stop Wasteful Styrofoam Trays in Our School
Montgomery County Public Schools (MD) use disposable styrofoam lunch trays. The Young Activist Club has researched and identified problems with styrofoam (resin #6, polystyrene), including that it is made from styrene, a carcinogen that can leach into food. The Club has raised more than $10,000 to pilot a tray washing project in one local county school, Piney Branch Elementary School. The pilot will assess whether the extra labor and water costs of washing trays can be offset by the costs of perpetually buying single-use disposable trays. But the local School Board and Superintendent have rejected the students' idea. Please help us convince the Superintendent to support this student-led initiative, which has the potential to save the public school district money at a time when it most needs it.
