  • Repeal gun manufacturer immunity to lawsuits
On October 26, 2005, President Bush signed into law S. 397, the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act." This bill prohibited victims of the gun industry's negligent practices from filing lawsuits in America's courts. We seek the repeal of that law. This would allow the families to seek justice (not that anything can be done to replace a lost child) in the court system, as well as countless other families who have experienced gun violence to seek such justice. The Unites States has a staggering gun problem. In 2007, a total of 31,224 firearm-related deaths due to suicide and 12,632 deaths from gun related homicide. This needs to be addressed in a comprehensive program; however, the first step is to stop manufacturers from marketing guns to people who should not be able to obtain them (those who are either criminal or severely mentally ill).

  • Don't just keep Medicare: Make it Rational and Sustainable!
We need to focus on rational, sensible changes that make Medicare a sustainable benefit for the greatest number of people. The vast majority of Medicare funds are spent in the final year or months of a person's life. Health care now enables me to have a quality life despite heart disease and leukemia, but when the time comes that these diseases or just age are ending my life, it makes no sense to use vast healthcare funds to postpone death for a few months.

  • Introduce legislation that mandates annual reporting on gun violence in America.
One of the most insidious of the NRA's tactics in its war against reasonable gun control policies in America is the Tiahrt amendments which not only severely restrict the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms from disclosing its data on gun violence and illegal gun trafficking under the Freedom of Information Act but also bar such data from being used in civil suits against gun manufacturers. Additionally the NRA has successfully lobbied Congress to place restrictions on both the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health, preventing them from engaging in or funding research into the effects of gun violence on the nation's health and safety.
