I have just partially retired from my job and my social security will begin next month, and I am totally dependent upon these 2 sources of income to make ends meet. I worked alot of years paying into the system, in fact much more than I shall be receiving by comparison, and I totally object to the cutting down people's social security due to the fact that there was never any cuts while the Government was receiving our pay in to this fund.

Social Security is not the place to take money to make up for the Fiscal Cliff or the deficit.

Those of us who have paid our entire lives into Social Security should not have our Social Security used as a bargaining chip with the Republicans. Leave the Social Security account alone. Tax the rich once and for all. If the Republicans are not open for ANY negotiation, it's time to get some other parties started in our government, like the other countries. We in the middle class need the Social Security benefits to survive. Float bonds, high interest Treasury Bills, other investments, and force taxes for the rich. Be creative and find other means and bring back employment to this country.

I am an unemployed 56-year-old who can not find a job, which forces me to use my 401K money to pay my mortgage. Cutting social security will be devasting when I do retire. But my vote still counts.

I am a writer, living in Los Angeles but originally from Chicago. I am a Vietnam combat veteran and winner of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Today, I survive on a Social Security payment and a 100 percent disability pension from the VA. I have an Agent-Orange connected cancer and am undergoing tests to determine if I have a pituitary tumor. Social Security is self-funded and has no effect on the national deficit. Congress should not rob seniors and the disabled. They should eliminate tax breaks for millionaires instead.

Social Security cuts

I am a widow, my husband past away two years ago. I have worked all my life and I count on my social security check ever month to be abel to make my house payment and make ends meet. I put into this all the time I worked and now that i need it and count on it, I want it to be there for me. I hate to think that I could become homeless for not having enough money to pay for my house payment. All my husbands retirement and my own retirement went to his care expense and care facilities before he past on. So I plead with you please don't mess with our Social Security, I speak for myself and all those others that are in the same situation as I am. Social security is critical to the health and well-being of my family. Not only did my parents and in-laws depend on it but my brothers and sisters also rely on social security benefits. Raising the retirement age or reducing the benefits will have a detrimental impact on my family.

This week President Obama made an offer to Republican John Boehner to cut Social Security benefits and leave in place some of the Bush tax cuts for the top 2%. The cuts in Social Security are opposed by an overwhelming majority of SignOn.org members and would amount to "a cut of more than 5 percent and more as the years go by." For many retirees this would mean critical cuts to benefits that cover medicine, food, and other daily necessities. The good news is that many senators, including Senate Leader Harry Reid, have promised to oppose Social Security cuts in any deficit reduction package. If they hear from enough of their constituents, we can still get the Senate to reject this proposal and protect Social Security.

President Obama in a proposed fiscal cliff deal with John Boehner will decrease Social Security benefits by 5% in 2013 with more decreases to follow. These cuts decrease the already low income of elderly and disabled while people earning $400,000 or less will continue to see their incomes increase from the continued implementation of the Bush era tax cuts.
