Coal ash is contaminating our rivers, lakes and drinking water supplies here in North Carolina. Coal ash contains a number of toxic heavy metals including arsenic, chromium and selenium, among many others, and is often stored near waterways in unlined impoundments. The state is aware of the pollution, but has yet to take action. We need the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to issue comprehensive rules on coal ash disposal.

As we mourn the unfathomable loss of innocent young lives and the lives of fellow educators who died protecting them at Sandy Hook Elementary, the girls' school community must come together to lead the the dialogue in support of secure schools and stronger gun control legislation. The girls at our schools want all girls across the globe to have the opportunity to learn in safe learning environments. The tragedy behind this is that the NRA and other lobbyist recently defeated the ban on the proposed sale of 30 round assault weapons in Connecticut. Now, without apology, they heartlessly suggest how it might not have made a difference.... Their solution, do nothing. We know better! Make only guns with a single shot capacity legal. Numerous of children lost their lives due to school violence. From innocent kindergarten students to young adults in college and different age groups in between. Changing the gun law will NOT prevent further shootings. I/we believe schools need better protection to provide a safer learning environment for our children. Congress is about to reduce the Medicare and social security of older Americans. Don't let them reduce your retirement and medical benefits without first addressing their own very rich benefits. Do you know that a one term senator is entitled to life time benefits at the rate of their current salaries for the rest of their lives. That is for 6 years of their lives they get a life time pension. This needs to be addressed before working people's benefits are reduced.
