In an atmosphere of tax cuts and service reductions - fire stations and school being closed - churches remain tax free. While using the same infrastructure that tax paying businesses and taxpayers use - roads, police, firefighters - churches are exempt from paying taxes. Some churches are clearly for profit business that make money off of their members. These "business churches" do not contribute to the economic well being of the community nor help support the infrastructure. This petition seeks to gain support for a constitutional amendment to the Florida constitution requiring any church that makes over a 33% profit above its demonstrated operating costs and charitable work to pay taxes like other businesses pay. Civil rights activist and Native American Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned for 37 years and is in poor health. Many believe that Peltier’s trial was politically motivated, tainted by prosecutorial and judicial misconduct, and that he is a political prisoner, innocent of the charges of which he was convicted. Advocates for Peltier’s release include Amnesty International, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the National Congress of American Indians, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, Jesse Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Michael Moore, etc.

Let's keep guns out of the hands of anyone but licensed owners by promoting secure storage and yearly accountability inspections and background checks.

Stopping corporations and the rich from stealing America

It's time to collect and destroy all assault weapons and huge ammo clips in our country (except police & military) and close gun show and private sale loopholes.

This petition aims to intercept the power of the NRA which has a grip on our congress and senate. The only way we will enact meaningful gun control legislation is if we remove the NRA from the political landscape, for BOTH parties. Think about how Grover Norquist used the "power of the pledge" to get Republicans to commit to never raising taxes--we can use this power in a positive way, to get politicians to publicly commit, by signing a Pledge, to never taking another dime of NRA political contributions. The petition itself--and your signatures--will be used to persuade representatives who currently take NRA contributions to sign a simple pledge that states they will no longer do so.

We are all heart sick over the killing of twenty innocent children and the adults who tried to protect them from harm. If bullets and assault rifles were not so readily available perhaps we could reach the mentally ill and help prevent such violence. The solution has to start somewhere....let is start now with each of us.

Last night at a Christmas concert in my church we began with prayers for the shooting in Connecticut. I could hear others crying as was I when the priest said the names of the children and teachers who died and then the name of the shooter. The traditional readings and songs, with imagery of innocent babies, the coming of the Prince of Peace and the words, "Comfort, Comfort Ye My People" carried a whole new meaning. I thought, let's seize this moment to try and end gun violence.

It's important to balance gun rights with responsibilities.
